Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:1-2 The Bible gives us examples of the spiritual value of hospitality for both for the one giving and the one receiving care: Abraham went above-and-beyond the rule of hospitality when he welcomed strangers into his tent, washed their feet, and offered them the finest of food (Genesis 18:1-18). Lydia modeled radical hospitality when she housed Paul and Silas (Acts 16:11-15, 40). The ministry of Paul and Silas was completely dependent upon the hospitality of others. As the Lord opened her heart, she opened her home to these servants of God. We often forget that part of the Christmas story is Joseph s second dream, telling him to flee King Herod s wrath and to take the newborn Jesus to Egypt. Christ and his family were refugees, moving into a land that was not his own. This story reminds us that whenever we welcome a stranger, we are welcoming one in the spirit of Christ. The Exodus story of Moses leading the Hebrews to freedom in a new land reminds Israel to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt (Deuteronomy 10:19). Scripture has a lot to say about the journey of God s people. Together we can learn from the biblical narratives how God guided refugees and migrants in the past. There is little doubt that the global situation for refugees and migrants around the world today is of biblical proportions. You are invited to a program, Radical Hospitality for Refugees, on September 30 at 7 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wooster. During this service, Manolis Ntamparakise, the director of social action for the Naomi Ecumenical Workshop for Refugees, will share about his work with refugees in Greece. Christians are ultimately equipped to journey with refugees and migrants, because we are all journeying through this barren land. As we think about, pray about, and work toward finding refuge for refugees, we know that we too are refugees in a land that really isn t our own (Rebecca Snippe). Blessings in Christ, Pastor Bob

By these practices we mature in faith; we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of God. Growing in grace does not come without purposeful commitment to learning the faith and cultivating our love for God. Adult Bible Study God s World and God s People Begins September 16 at 9:30 a.m. Each lesson comes from the Book of Genesis, the book of beginnings. Through its pages, God is revealed as the Creator, Sustainer, Judge, and Redeemer who brought all things into being. Our lessons survey God's creation of the universe, earth, and people. God Created the World The first three lessons in this unit concentrate on God's creating the universe, earth, and people and then declaring all things created good. Although God created and sustains all life, humankind is special to God and unique. Lesson Four explores how God established the institution of marriage and the process of reproduction in order to populate the earth. Lesson Five explains how humankind chose to do wrong and thus introduced sin into God's perfectly created world. God Destroys and Re-Creates The first two lessons in this unit present Noah and his family as righteous followers of God who help repopulate and restore the earth after the destruction caused by the Great Flood. The last two lessons feature the biblical couples Abraham and Sarah and Isaac and Rebekah, who worked with God in the cycle of continuing creation. God Blesses and Re-Creates Regardless In the last unit, the first lesson explores how God blessed humble Isaac in enemy territory. The next three lessons consider how Jacob deceitfully obtained the blessing God had already destined for him, later established a right relationship with God, and finally was blessed by God to marry and produce children with the wife he loved and for whom he long labored.
