1 Fellowship Lantern Volume 60, Issue 1 September, 2016 September means many things starting up again here at church. Sunday school for children will begin again. The choir will once again be offering their leadership in worship. The fall rummage sale will fill our fellowship hall. Officer recruitment will also start in preparation for our Charge Conference coming in October. I also want to draw your attention to three other events in the month of September. On 10 September, the Detroit Renaissance District Conference will be held at Metropolitan United Methodist Church beginning at 3:00 pm. Along with presentations on several leading and innovative ministries within the Detroit Renaissance District, our own Dr. Curtis Mathison will be performing his Tribute to Paul Robeson, and my son, Isaac Garrigues-Cortelyou will be presenting a musical piece as well. I hope you ll join us for an inspiring afternoon in the spectacular sanctuary of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. Two weeks later, on Saturday, 24 September, we will have the opportunity to welcome our new bishop, Rev. David Alan Bard, his wife Julie, and their family at Waterford Central United Methodist Church on Highland Road in Waterford. Bishop Bard was serving at First United Methodist Church in Duluth, Minnesota since 2005 prior to his election to the episcopacy on July 13, He has been in ministry for more than 30 years and served in many roles within both the Minnesota Annual Conference and the General Church. The following week, one Wednesday and Thursday, 28 and 29 September, we will be having photography done for a new Church Directory. I know it has been many years since this was last done and I encourage everyone to come by and have their picture taken. You can make your appointment online or schedule them with the church office. We all know how much a directory can help us put names together with faces, even when we ve known each other for many years. It will be a busy month and it will be a blessed September at First UMC Wayne- Westland! To promote Christian discipleship and fellowship in the congregation and community Published by.the FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF Wayne-Westland Pastor Carter Cortelyou 3 Town Square Wayne, MI Telephone Pastor Carter
2 A LONG HOT SUMMER And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow not even the powers of hell can separate us from God s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 We all have experienced this hot dry weather and some of us have had other difficulties as well. As a church family we have lost a very dear friend an important member of our church family, Phil Shelly. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it. Believers are in the world together and there is no such thing as private or individualistic Christianity. We need each other. Anita and I have had kind of a lost summer, both having spent some time in the hospital and have spent a lot of time in visiting doctors. We are very thankful for the support of our church family, for all your prayers, cards, and well wishes, and for the hospital visits of Pastor Carter. The scripture verses at the beginning of this article contain one of the most comforting promises in all Scripture. Believers have always had to face hardships in many forms: persecution, illness, imprisonment, and even death. These sometimes cause them to fear that they have been abandoned by Christ. But Paul exclaims that it is impossible to be separated from the love of Christ. His death for us is proof of his unconquerable love. Nothing can separate us from Christ's presence. God tells us how great his love is so that we will feel totally secure in him. If we believe these overwhelming assurances, we can rejoice in his unfailing love. What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Romans 8:31 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy! Philip. 1:4 Red Miller
