1 Manifest Destiny Unit Text Chapter Describe the concept of Manifest Destiny and its impact on the developing character of the American nation, including the purpose, challenges and economic incentives for westward expansion. 3 Manifest Destiny and Trails West Part I. Study the picture below and answer the questions that follow. 1. List 5 images you see in this picture. 2. Does this picture represent something positive or negative happening in America in the 1840s? What did you base your reasoning on? Explain in 2 sentences. 3. Who is the lady floating across the sky? Which way is she traveling and why? What is she holding in her arms? 4. Do you think a man or a woman drew this? How do you know? What could be an appropriate title for this picture? 5. Define Manifest Destiny by using your textbook glossary. In what way(s) is that definition a good description of what is happening in the picture?

4 Part II. Trails West Assignment. Despite hardships of the journey and the difficult living conditions at the journey's end, the West drew increasing numbers of American's during the mid-19th century. Below are three of the most famous trails that Americans travelled westward for economic, political, and social reasons. Use your text book to complete the graphic organizer. What did they find once they arrived? Where did the trail end? 1. Do the 3 trails have any similarities? Please list as many similarities that you notice. 2. What do you notice that is different amongst the three trails? List as many as you can. 3. Review your answers for why did they go. What are the economic reasons for moving west? What are some social reasons for moving west? 4. Can you think of political reasons why people would travel west during this time period? List 2-3.

What does the term annexation mean? What year was Texas annexed as a U.S. state based on the map on page ? Part II. Read the statement. Determine if the statement is TRUE or FALSE. If the statement is FALSE rewrite the statement into a TRUE statement. Use the lines provided. ***Use textbook pages to answer the remaining questions. 3.TRUE/FASLE. In 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain and controlled the territory of Texas. _ 4.TRUE/FALSE. In order to increase settlement in Texas, Mexico offered sea access to the Gulf of Mexico to people who would agree to bring families to Texas. _ 5.TRUE/FALSE. Stephen A. Austin became a leader among American settlers for bringing 300 Tejano families to Texas. 6.TRUE/FALSE. Mexico had strict rules of banning slavery, learning Spanish, and becoming Catholic for American families living in Texas.
