Our council lost a mentor a couple of weeks ago when Brother Dick Linn passed away. When Dick joined our council, he immediately began to attend officers meetings, as he knew that anyone could attend, whether an officer or not. We all learned very quickly that Dick was the inspiration for the Measure Up program, at the local, state, and national levels. Even though our council was already active in Measure Up, Dick wanted to be sure that we were raising enough money through our various fundraisers to make significant contributions to support our flagship program s goal, to help the developmentally disabled. He immediately began to discuss selling tickets, for the Super Cash Bonanza, as it raises money for the state and local charity programs. He also organized a bus trip to a casino, where our council would share money earned with his previous council in North Akron. It wasn t long before Dick offered to take our Membership Director and Grand Knight out for lunch (separately) to share ideas regarding how to gain new members, raise money, and promote new programs. Dick said several times that he had work to do in the time he had left. He even became an officer and co-director in the last two years! Dick always wanted to move at light speed, even when his mentees were a step or two behind. Dick s determination, dedication, and inspiration will be sorely missed as the council embarks on a new year. Luckily, we are blessed to have his many ideas and legacy to help us push forward! Jeff Fry, GK 1

7 PAST COUNCIL ACTIVITIES FAMILY BOWLING NIGHT WOW! The council Family Bowling Party on March 16 th was again a huge success with 75 people in attendance at Charger Lanes! This event is a favorite, especially with the younger folks. The council bought pizza and an enormous selection of food was brought by the families providing enough for everyone to munch on all evening. The party was chaired by Frank and Marcie Obreza (left) who did an outstanding job creating a fun evening for all in attendance. 7

8 Day of Reflection Four Knights took advantage of the Lenten Day of Recollection at Loyola of the Lakes. The men got together for an afternoon of prayer, sharing, and contemplation. Thank you, Paul Wagner, Church Director, for this wonderful day. Parish Support Group Recognized The Homebound Ministry was recognized by the council for their service to the parish on March 31 st. As Church Director Paul Wagner wrote in part in the church bulletin: Thank you for all the care, comfort, concern, and most of all the Holy Eucharist that you take to our precious shut-ins, keeps them included in Prince of Peace thoughts and prayers. A certificate of appreciation and a gift card were given to each member of the ministry. DEEPENING OUR FAITH Deacon Bob Highlights from the meeting We hear in the gospel of Luke blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he returns. (Lk 12:37) Vigilance is essential to the Christian life. The great enemy of our faith is not persecution but slumber. The Church seems to thrive under persecution. In the early Church the persecution was a cause of great growth of the early church. At those moments of persecution, the Church sees her purpose more clearly and more perfectly resembles her spouse. Ease - comfort - Complacency - these threaten the Christian life far more than persecution. They breed a spiritual stupor, a dullness of soul, and a forgetfulness of the Lord s return. We might speak of someone losing their Faith, but people do not lose their faith like they lose their car keys or the TV remote. Rather, they grow complacent and comfortable, tired and sleepy. They fall into a slumber and fail to form their lives by the faith. Against this spiritual stupor we should cultivate a vigilance of mind and heart. Even as we continue to practice the faith, we may become intellectually sleepy. Our thinking becomes more formed by the world and before we know it, we judge our faith in terms of the world rather than judging the world by our faith. For example, the celebration of Christmas has been taken hostage by the worldliness of greed. Intellectual vigilance requires us to monitor closely what we listen to, read, and watch. If we want our faith to remain intact, we must learn to filter out those ideas that are untrue and sinful. Second, we must maintain a vigilance of the heart. In the end, vigilance is a function of love. Because we love Christ, we remain wide-awake and wait in joyful hope for his return. We must guard our hearts and daily renew our devotion to him through a healthy, vigilance prayer life. We make choices Those choices make us From Fr. Bob s sermon 8
