With the help of the entire membership and our incredible Ladies Auxiliary, we persevered and became stronger after a whirlwind of a weekend! This past Friday, a record number of us entertained (sang Christmas carols) at Pleasant View. We had so many carolers that we had to break into two groups! Special thanks to the Stansky men for their musical help, and to our lead singers who made the rest of us sound respectable. Friday evening was just a precursor for the rest of the weekend. Saturday saw time-consuming preparations for the Council s main event and program of the year, Breakfast with Santa. Hundreds of hours were spent getting everything ready: from the stamping of the placemats, to the purchasing of the food, and trimming of Christmas trees. Food preparation began at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday and the final decorations were put away on Tuesday evening. Countless dedicated souls shared their time, energy, skills, and talents to ensure that the parish enjoyed an amazing morning with Santa! As we all know, Prince of Peace is an inviting parish because parishioners are friendly and provide a welcoming atmosphere for families. Thank you ALL for working so hard to make our parish so special! I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year! Jeff Fry, GK 1

7 PAST COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Keep Christ in Christmas magnets and Nativity scenes are still on sale for a short time. The magnets, suitable for car or refrigerator, are $5 each and make great stocking stuffers. Please volunteer to sell them after Masses. It only takes 10 minutes of your time to help the council. Bill Forshey, chairman. The Nativity scenes are again on sale with Br. Joe Urbanski as chairman. Order your scene and it will be delivered to the church for pickup. There are several varieties of scenes with different prices so check them out after Mass. We also could use help taking orders for the scenes after Masses. If you can help, please contact Joe or an officer. More than just a fund raiser, the sale and distribution of these items help put the word out that our council believes that we should Keep Christ in Christmas. Coats for Kids Our children s coats have arrived from Supreme and we have already distributed a number of them to needy children. If you know of a family that could use a little help with kids coats this holiday season, contact GK Jeff Fry at the number listed above. After all parish requests have been filled we will donate coats to Common Threads Clothes Closet in Barberton for distribution to the needy of the area. We will also reserve a few coats to be used in event of parish emergencies. CHARity. 7

11 DEEPENING OUR FAITH Deacon Bob Highlights from the meeting Our Father There has been talk recently about changing the translation of the Lord s Prayer. I thought it would be good to look at the prayer tonight. The apostles asked Jesus to tell them how to pray. Jesus then gave the apostles the Lord s Prayer. The Lord s Prayer sums up all prayer. In this prayer we shows our adoration for God, contrition for our sins, thanksgiving for our daily bread, and asking God for our needs as well as forgiveness for ourselves and others. It begins by glorifying the one true God. Hallowed be thy name. The prayer then prays for the coming of God s kingdom. This expresses a desire for his lordship over everything. When all is done God s way, by God s power, then creation will reach its fulfillment. Remember we are praying that God s will be done, not our will. The prayer then focuses on all the daily needs of all God s creatures, summed up in the petition for bread. In this way, the prayer acknowledges God as the source of all good things, are supplied by God even when God supplies them through the one of the many agents at work in his creation. Their work is achieved only through God s enabling and sustaining power which constantly upholds them. But our greatest need is for forgiveness of sins. Jesus also teaches his followers to pray for this. Yet it is only as we are willing to be merciful to others that we can expect God s mercy. Finally, Jesus teaches his followers to pray for deliverance from testing. This is what is being discussed as being changed. It says and lead us not into temptation. The pope is proposing the translation of do not let us fall into temptation. This translation is already in use in France. It is our humble acknowledgment of our weakness, and of our trust for God to supply deliverance from any test he permits to occur. Let's all pray the perfect prayer that Jesus taught us. Let's not just "recite" what we have memorized, but really mean what we pray. IMPORTANT DATES MARK THESE DATES DOWN NOW! If you are retired, or work a back shift, and would like to contribute to the parish as a funeral server, you can help out this important ministry. It doesn t matter if you have never served Mass before, you can still volunteer and you will be trained. It is not necessary to serve at every funeral; adding servers will ensure there are always enough servers to cover the funerals. Please contact Bill Forshey for more information if you are interested. Also see New Servers-in-Training below. Or, you might be interested in the Funeral Choir ministry. Those who choose to volunteer for this ministry will receive a call before each funeral. Like Funeral Servers, the funeral Masses are in the morning and you do not have to commit to sing at every funeral. Men s voices are especially needed. Please contact Ralph Conrad for more information. 13 Member Spotlight This month: Joe Urbanski Joe Urbanski has been a member of Knights of Columbus for over 47 years and is an insurance member. He doesn t remember who brought him in but he does remember that he took his 1 st degree at Mantua Council. For those who know Joe s typical dry humor, when asked why he wanted to be a Knight, Joe replied: I was asked. Maybe that s a lesson to all of us for recruiting purposes! As a follow-up question, when asked what he expected from the Knights he replied, I don t remember what I expected but I am glad I am in now! Joe has held all of the council offices and almost all of the 4 th degree offfices including Assembly Commander of two different Assemblies. He is a member of the O Keefe and District One Color Guards. Joe has been active in the council by attending as many meetings as he can, and workd projects such as Measure Up, the Sandwich Project, Christmas Caroling (and Dinner), the St Vincent depaul Walk for the Poor, and Barberton Soup Kitchen where he and Jane dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus to give out socks to the needy during the December meal. Joe is also active at his home church, St Andrew the Apostle, where he is involved in the Holy Name Society, Fish Frys, Funeral coir and Peace Together choir, and is a Cantor at Saturday Mass. Joe and Jane live in Norton. Together they have 9 children, 36 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren! He is retired; he was self-employed at Michelin. When Joe isn t volunteering for church organizations he is active in the National Model Railroad Association, Cuyahoga Valley Model Railroad Club, Slovene Pensioners, and ooks forward to monthly lunches with friends. Something you may not know about Joe: he and Jane work the voting booth. We appreciate Joe s knowledge and generousity and we re glad to have him as part of our council. 14 LADIES AUXILIARY Helping the Knights Help Church & Community We had a fantastic turnout for the Caroling. So much so that we split into two groups with one group leaving the lobby and heading to the south corridors and the others, the north corridors. Thank you, ladies, for your help making and passing out the treats and cards for the residents at Pleasant View. They brought joy to all who received them! After Caroling we all met at Al s Corner Restaurant for a buffet dinner of Cabbage Rolls, Sauerkraut, Sausages, Cabbage and Noodles, Pierogis, Chicken Paprikas, green beans, apple, cherry and cheese Strudels, and beverages. No one went away hungry! Right on the tails of Caroling and Dinner, we served at the Breakfast with Santa on Sunday morning. 14 Ladies sing Jingle Bells to welcome Santa Good Job, Ladies!
