Father Sam spoke this past Sunday in his homily about the time Jesus was rejected in his own hometown. As a church, Prince of Peace is extremely accepting and strives to welcome new parishioners and ideas. As a council, we try to achieve these same goals. We encourage and accept practicing catholic gentlemen into our council (we have several brothers from different parishes) and endeavor to support new ideas from our members. Much of our council business is conducted at our officers meetings, but all brothers may attend and participate. The majority of ideas are discussed and hashed out at these meetings. Some suggestions are perfect for our council and are voted on at the next meeting, while others sometimes need to be discussed and addressed at a later time. But new ideas are the lifeline of every organization and everyone should feel free to participate and share. At this time of year, we celebrate our independence as a nation and our freedoms as Americans. The Knights of Columbus was founded by a priest with an idea in New Haven, Connecticut, as a local organization that soon expanded across the nation. Our council must continue to grow and improve by welcoming new ideas from members, which will enable us to continue our excellent work in our parish and community. Jeff Fry, GK 1

7 Family Day at the Zoo A letter from our Family Director Brother Knights and families, as Family Director of our Chapter, my wife and I would like to invite you and your family to the KofC Picnic at the Akron Zoo on Sunday, July 29, The cost is just $7 per person, which includes an all-day Zoo pass and free parking. This is a huge savings off the regular price of admission. This event begins at noon with a picnic under a pavilion which is reserved just for us. The Council will be providing the main course of fried chicken, JoJo potatoes, and sub sandwiches, plus assorted beverages. We ask each family to bring a covered dish to share. After we are done eating, you will be able to explore the zoo and gardens at your leisure. The zoo is open until 5 p.m. Many of you may have visited the zoo as children or taken your own children. We rediscovered the zoo a few years ago, when we became grandparents. It is a lovely, clean facility, set on 50 acres with over 700 assorted creatures on display. They also have beautiful gardens to enjoy. As seating is limited under the tent, we want to offer this opportunity to the members of the Knights and their extended families first. To reserve your tickets, call Mike Breiding at ASAP. We will soon be offering this opportunity to the general membership of the parish. We really hope you will join us! FAMILY Mike & Diane Breiding FAITH IN ACTION A New Supreme Program A new program model, titled Faith in Action, will take effect as the umbrella for Knights of Columbus-related activities beginning with the fraternal year. Faith in Action replaces Surge with Service, which was introduced nearly 50 years ago. This model is an evolution of the Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish initiative that was introduced in November 2015, said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. Faith in Action, he explained, embodies a simplified overall program structure, featuring four instead of six categories. The Faith in Action model carries the Order s unchanged mission into the challenges of a changing world. It includes a strong call to action and focuses on programs in four categories: Faith, Family, Community and Life. Some other key points regarding the updated program model are: Councils should appoint individual faith, family, community and life directors. They will no longer need to appoint a youth or council director, as the Youth and Council categories have been consolidated into the Community, Faith and Family categories. The new model reduces the requirements to earn the Columbian Award, which recognizes excellence in programming and charitable outreach, to completing four programs in each of the four categories. To earn the award, there is one required program in each category, designed to enrich the spiritual life of the council, family and community. These are: a Spiritual Reflection Program; Consecration to the Holy Family; Helping Hands, and a Novena for Life. Pray, hope, and don't worry. Padre Pio 7

8 PAST COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Our Family Director, Mike Breiding, and his wife, Diane, organized an evening at Rubber Ducks on June 30 th. This year we decided to try the all-you-can-eat buffet in the Fowl Territory section of the park. There were hamburgs and hot dogs with all the toppings, BBQ Pulled chicken, mac & cheese, potato salad, potato chips, cookies, ice tea, lemonade, and water. The Breidings held a drawing for special bobbleheads. The night ended with fireworks. It was a beautiful night for baseball!! 8

9 DEEPENING OUR FAITH Deacon Bob Highlights from the meeting Image of God What is your image of God? Through all the artwork and statues we have seen, we may think if god the father as an old man with a long, flowing beard. Of course, we see Jesus who looks like us, when we were younger and had hair and the Holy Spirit as a dove. As human beings, we tend to get things backward. We try to make God into man s image or in something we recognize, like a bird. Man is made in God s image. This is an awesome gift. And this is who we truly are. "Image of God" is a theological term, applied uniquely to humans, which denotes the symbolical relation between God and humanity. The term has its roots in Genesis 1:27, wherein "God created man in his own image..." This scriptural passage does not mean that God is in human form, but rather, that humans are in the image of God in their moral, spiritual, and intellectual nature. Thus, humans mirror God's divinity in their ability to actualize the unique qualities with which they have been endowed, and which make them different than all other creatures. All those who the knights serve in Jesus name are seeing the image of God in you. And as you help these people, you are seeing the image of God in them. By serving them, you are serving God. Those who we administer to as extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist are the image of God. We are bringing them Jesus, God in the Eucharist, to individuals who are the image of God. The trap in life is doubting who we truly are when we have come to believe in the voices that tell us to be attractive, rich, powerful and popular. How quickly we give in to this temptation of forgetting the gift of being created in God s image, and accept self-rejection. Accepting self-rejection and forgetting that we are made in God s image, is the enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that declares we are loved. Being loved by God expresses the core truth of our existence. We are the image of God. So what is your image of God? IMPORTANT DATES MARK THESE DATES DOWN NOW!
