Father Bob shared an incredible homily several weeks ago, focusing on the faults and lack of action performed by clergy, and challenging us and other members of the Church to be compassionate toward victims of abuse and to do everything possible to prevent future occurrences. Br. Bill Forshey, in his Culture of Life program this past Saturday, played a song titled, The Least of These. It was referencing the decisions made by parents to abort their children. We prayed for the unborn, as well as their parents who are making the vital decisions. Knights, from days of old, are meant to be protectors of the most vulnerable, the marginalized in society. We work extremely hard and are proud to support the developmentally disabled, as well as the rights of the unborn. As Father Bob stated, we as Catholics have an obligation to stand up for the rights of victims of abuse; including domestic violence involving spouses and children, abuse inflicted on children by all adults, and those victimized based on their sexual orientation. As Knights, we are charged with protecting the marginalized in our society, especially those in our parish. What a great opportunity we have to help shape the culture of our parish and community! Jeff Fry, GK 1

9 October 1 st marks the beginning of our annual Coats for Kids campaign. Please start looking through your closets for new or nearly-new coats, sweaters, hats, or gloves that you no longer want but would be good for someone who is in need. Remember: we collect ALL sizes, not just children s sizes. DEEPENING OUR FAITH Deacon Bob Highlights from the meeting Eschatology Part 1 A few years ago, I was talking to our second grade faith formation class. I asked them how we get to heaven. I really expected them to answer that if they do what their parents tell them, or help others that they will get to heaven. But one little girl answered with a huge attitude, "well, you have to die first!" I thought that we could talk about eschatology - the study of end times. The four last things that will occur are death, judgment, hell, and heaven. God is in all of these: God calls us - death. God peers into our lives - judgment. God is lost to us - hell. God is gained - heaven. Eschatology is divided into two parts: individual and general eschatology. General eschatology is the big picture - the end of the existence of time, and the manifestation of the new heavens and the new earth. This is also sometimes referred to the final judgement. Individual eschatology focuses on what awaits for each one of us. This month, we will talk about hell. Sin is a heaviness that weight us down, that keeps us from being what we really are called to be by God's grace. Our sins reflect that in some form or fashion, we are convinced that the world revolves around us, our needs, and our desires. Hell is a state of complete self-absorption and intense loneliness taken to its furthest and logical end. There is nothing glamorous about sin and evil, for evil is depressing, soul-shrinking and in the end, it is powerless. When we, in this life, experience the coldness of isolation and the dark terrors of loneliness, we have a small taste of hell. In summary, hell is the state that follows from having refused divine love. Hell is not the condemnation of man by God. It is man's condemnation of himself. It is the state of those persons who reject a right relationship with God and turned their back on him. Next month, we will discuss purgatory. IMPORTANT DATES MARK THESE DATES DOWN NOW! The presentation came after her father, Mike Noe, a 1987 UA graduate, reached out to UA to inquire about some sort of distinction for Katie, whose two younger sisters also are UA graduates. At the presentation, Katie and her family were joined by Interim President John Green; Kim Cole, vice president of development and executive director of the UA Foundation; Willy Kollman, assistant vice president of alumni relations and executive director of the UA Alumni Association; and Zippy, UA s kangaroo mascot. Katie is treated as an honorary sister of Delta Gamma sorority; her two younger sisters, Kellie and Kristie, also are members.
