1 THE UPSTART Volume No. 10, Issue No.1 - January Edition Hours of Operation LODGE OFFICERS Exalted Ruler Stephen Del Rosso Leading Knight June Tackus Loyal Knight Richard Haugh Lecturing Knight Joyce Leister Secretary Erik Myles, PER Treasurer Scott Tackus Tiler Daniel Vallier Esquire Dennis G. Claffey, PER Chaplain Kenneth MacMurtry Inner Guard Joseph Waggoner BOARD OF TRUSTEES Five Year William Wolfe, PER Four Year James Shaw Three Year Ellsworth Leach, Jr. Two Year Michael Perleoni, PER One Year Gerald McDonald Exalted Ruler s Message Wow! What a busy December we had at our Lodge; success was all around us! Early in the month we performed our annual Memorial Service for our departed members. Thanks to the loyal participation of our Officers and members present we did a great job. Later in the month, many devoted members had been hard at work preparing for upcoming events. On Saturday the 12th we kicked off our first event, the members Christmas party. Delicious food prepared by local restaurant, South Tavern, filled our bellies as we danced to juke box tunes, played pool & darts, and had a jolly old time. If you weren t there you missed a great time. Any video footage from the event should be turned over to the ER for review before any unnecessary distribution! Thank you to the Lodge and House Committee for planning this event. The following Sunday started with a tasty home cooked breakfast prepared by our early bird chefs. Soon after, another crew of volunteers rushed in to make way for the Camp Sunrise Christmas Party. Tom Harkins and his elves created a wonderful meal of pasta, sauce, and chicken cutlets for the parents, and tasty chicken tenders for the kids. Just as cup cakes and candy canes began to disappear, the sound of screaming sirens and horns could be heard speeding up the driveway. Was there a fire or an emergency? No, it was Santa Claus (AKA Joe Rotundo) arriving in a fire engine from the Glastonbury Fire Department. With his red suit and sack of toys he was greeted with holiday cheers and anxious kids. Santa took time to meet with every child and presented them their personally requested gift. The parents looked on with happy smiles of gratitude as Mon. Thurs. 4 PM Close Friday 3 PM Close Saturday 12 PM Close Sunday 12 PM Close Permittee: Lee Littlefield they watched their kids experience a wonderful time. As the party began to wind down many thanks and compliments were expressed by parents to the Elks for sponsoring the Christmas party. We all did a great job with this event and have proven ourselves again - True Elks. Special thanks to Theresa Shaw and Mike Dondi for doing most of the preparation and planning. With only one day break after the Camp Sunrise Party, Veterans Chairman Ken Sylvester and his many helpers popped the party cork again and hosted the annual Veterans Christmas Party. Over 40 guest from the Rocky Hill VA Home attended. Appetizers were served and Delphine Cyr sang a capella the Star Spangled Banner. After a fine meal the vets enjoyed over 20 games of bingo. Continued on next page..

2 CHARITY JUSTICE BROTHERLY LOVE FIDELITY ER Message Continued... Delphine called the numbers while Viola delivered the winning cash with a welcomed hug. The last two games were personally sponsored by Don Cyr as he donated $100 for two $50 winners. All vets received a gift card for Wal- Mart and a bag of treats. I want to thank all the volunteers that participated in this event; too many to mention. The best thanks one can receive from this work is by seeing the results on the faces of the Vets. As they left the party they expressed their appreciation and enjoyment of our party. Great Job again by members of the Glastonbury Elks Lodge! While most of the hard work is behind us things are still happening at the Lodge. The ladies restroom that was recently renovated will soon be complimented by the newly renovated men s restroom. Black porcelain tiles cover the walls and floor. New fixtures, stall partition, suspended ceiling, lighting and orange paint has created a biker motif. So rev your throttle, race your engine and don t forget to wash your hands! Lodge Secretary Erik Myles, PER has been the editor and publisher behind the Upstart for many months. Erik will be making some changes in the up coming months related to ing the Upstart, along with a total redesign of our website. Check out his message in this edition for details. Trap shooting, Sunday breakfasts, and Friday Night Dinners are still happening. Check the website for news or call the Lodge. The meals have been great and the price is even better! Elk of the Month Theresa Shaw Theresa has been the wingman (woman) to many of our committee chairman, and some of our major events. She s always willing and ready to help. Theresa is pleasant to work with and her assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Theresa. Don t go far we ll be calling on you again! Happy New Year! Fraternally, Stephen Del Rosso Exalted Ruler Sunday Breakfast News The committee would like to thank those that continue to patronize the event. Please do not forget, this is not for Elks members and their families only. Bring a guest or two or three...friends, neighbors, co-workers; we love cooking for you so you don't have to! Of course without the help of my crew, this event would not be possible. Thanks to Martin Saindon, Eric Fettig, Bruce Lester, Mike Dondi, Louise and Doug Beeghly, Dave and Jodi Poulin, Mark Curtin, Bryan Tarbell (Dave Volpe, and behind the scenes, Scott Tackus! As always, your suggestions are welcome. Upcoming Schedule January 10, 2010 January 24, 2010 Dennis G. Claffey, PER Chairman

3 If you find a mistake in this month's Upstart...it's supposed to be there! From the Secretary s Desk I would like to thank everyone who gave to the annual food drive. Special thanks to member Troy Davidson for all his efforts in making this years drive a great success. The items will be delivered to the local food bank in the coming weeks. Starting April 1st, 2010 we will no longer the Upstart; you will only receive notification that it is available on our website for download. Finally, dues are now significantly past due for those still delinquent. In the coming months you will be receiving a final notice informing you that you will be dropped from the rolls per Grand Lodge Statues. Those current will receive their dues notice by mid to late February. Fraternally, Erik Myles, PER Secretary Speaking of our website, a new look is on its way! Additionally, the web address will change as well. If you go to the old address it will redirect you to our new home; please update your bookmarks. Propositions For Membership The Secretary s Office has received an application on the following individuals, read their names on the floor of our Lodge, and have forwarded them to the Investigation Committee for further processing. In accordance with Grand Lodge Statutes, any member knowing why any of these candidates should not be duly elected to membership, should notify a member of the Investigation Committee or one of the Lodge Officers. Each will be balloted on during a regularly scheduled meeting. Name Joseph Grillo, Jr. George Grillo Proposer Joseph Grillo, Sr. Joseph Grillo, Sr. Residence So. We will purchase a few pizzas for those willing to once again take the exam with us. Normally this process takes a few hours, and for those of you who have done it before, you know it is an enjoyable time. The training is a great tool for you to learn about the statues and rules that govern our Order. Well, we're about to enter the final three months of the year, and its that time again for us to seek anyone interested in becoming an officer at the Lodge. Remember, ANY member in GOOD standing can become an officer. There are no prerequisites and we ask anyone interested in stepping forward. Nominations will take place on February 10th, 2010 which is also PER Night and the next class to be Initiated. ELKS CARE ELKS SHARE Range Committee Reminders! The range is closed, always has been, when Trap Shooting takes place on Sundays, September thru April. Sessions do not have a set time to end other than when its dark. The next Range meeting will be on February 18th at 7:30pm Coming Soon - the Annual Antique Arms Show As always - SAFETY FIRST! Fraternally, Dennis G. Claffey, PER President Glastonbury Elks Lodge No Past Exalted Ruler Association Elks National Veterans Memorial A monument in the truest sense, the Elks National Veterans Memorial was built in 1926 to honor Americans whose profound sacrifices for the nation can never be recognized by mere words. With its massive dome, heroic sculptures and intricately detailed friezes, the Memorial is a distinctively American interpretation of classical greatness. The Elks Veterans Memorial is a tribute to the bravery, loyalty and dedication of the thousands of Elks who have fought and died for our country. It has been described as one of the most magnificent war memorials in the world, but with its monumental architecture and priceless art, the Memorial is more a symbol of peace and of the patriotism of the members of the Elks fraternity.
