1 THE UPSTART Volume No. 9, Issue No.11 - November Edition Hours of Operation LODGE OFFICERS Exalted Ruler Stephen Del Rosso Leading Knight June Tackus Loyal Knight Richard Haugh Lecturing Knight Joyce Leister Secretary Treasurer Scott Tackus Tiler Daniel Vallier Esquire Dennis G. Claffey, PER Chaplain Kenneth MacMurtry Inner Guard Joseph Waggoner BOARD OF TRUSTEES Five Year William Wolfe, PER Four Year James Shaw Three Year Vacant Two Year Michael Perleoni, PER One Year Gerald McDonald Exalted Ruler s Message In September we had our annual District Deputy audit and visitation. Both went well and we received high marks. Our lodge was also given an award for highest gain in membership for the past Lodge year. I would like to thank Inner Guard Joe Waggoner and the Mrs. for representing our Lodge at the GER dinner that was held at the Westbrook Lodge in September. Joe had the opportunity to meet our Grand Exalted Ruler and reported that he had a great time. Thanks Joe. Now that November is upon us, we have two very important holidays. But before we celebrate Thanksgiving Day for all our many blessings, let us not forget Veterans Day. On the 11th, let s thank our Vets for the sacrifices they made for the good of our country. They are to be held in the highest regard. With the months passing by quickly, December will be here before you know it. I d like to remind everyone that the Lodge will be hosting several events during this time. On December 13th from 4-6pm we will once again host the annual Camp Sunrise Holiday Party. Members should understand that there is a limited number of gift cards available starting Nov. 2nd and are on a first come basis. Of course we still need volunteers for decorating the hall and helping out at the event. Those interested should contact members Theresa Shaw and Mike Dondi. Also in December we will host the Veterans Holiday Party. At this time no date has been set so stay tuned for details. The Elks Memorial Service will take place on December 6th at 1PM. This event is open to all Members and is a great opportunity to reflect not only Mon. Thurs. 4 PM Close Friday 3 PM Close Saturday 12 PM Close Sunday 12 PM Close Permittee: Lee Littlefield on those who have passed this year, but all Absent Members. A light luncheon will be served after the ceremony. ENF raffle tickets are on sale now. This is a very important program that everyone should participate in. I would like to see all members make a donation by buying a ticket. Remember our Lodge gets money back from the Grand Lodge every year we meet the GER goal. You may even win a cash prize! Elk of the Month Erik is behind the scenes handling Lodge business and keeping us all up to speed on important events. He is a valuable member and shares a major part of our Lodge's success. Fraternally, Stephen Del Rosso Exalted Ruler
2 CHARITY JUSTICE BROTHERLY LOVE FIDELITY From the Secretary s Desk will need to go through the investigation and balloting process and the new candidate initiation. For several years I have been in charge of the annual Food Drive at our Lodge. Over the past couple years the donations have been minimal. I understand times are difficult, but I ask that you please consider giving to those less fortunate. For details please read the ad within this issue. When submitting a new application, be sure to look it over and include the $25 fee. Lately I have been receiving incomplete apps and sometimes no fee or incorrect amounts. This only slows down the membership process. In case you forgot, just because a candidate filled out an application or a past member a reinstatement application, they are not entitled to our facilities or any other Lodge unless the proposer signs them in. Both ! We continue to have trouble with some of your addresses. If you do not receive the newsletter or any other communication via , please let me know. As always you can visit our website for latest on what s happening! Reminders: Lodge Meetings during the months of November and December are held on the 1st & 3rd During the period between December 1st and January 1st, the fee for reinstatement is $1. Applications are available from the Secretary or with the bartender on duty. Revised By-Law booklets, and copies of the range rules are available from the bartender. Fraternally, Secretary The following members have a birthday within this month. Remember, it is the House Committee s policy to provide a birthday drink to each member on their birthday. Dominic J. 3 If you find a mistake in this month's Upstart...it's supposed to be there! Sunday Breakfast News Although the participation of the past few breakfasts have been lower than what we'd like to see, we will continue to have them on the second and fourth Sunday's of the month. I'd like to apologize for the miscommunication in last month's Upstart where it was stated that there would be one on October 4th. This was my mistake and I would like to thank Upstart Editor for assisting in getting an update out to the Members via . This brings up a good point; do we have your address? If not, please submit it to elks@elks2202.org Subject: Add Me, so we can notify you of any updates at the Lodge. Remember we now have eggs to order and omelets to order! As always, the public is welcome. Upcoming Schedule: November 8th November 22nd (weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving) December 13th (only one for December) Finally, thanks to my crew again! 4 Sick & Visiting CHECK US OUT ON THE WEB! - ELKS2202.ORG If you know of any member, who may not be doing well, please contact the Lodge at (860) or by elks@elks2202.org Subject: Sick & Visiting House Committee News Friday Night Dinners are back! We have been hammering out some of the issues and appreciate your patience. With the help of the Secretary, we will and post the menu on our website for the coming weeks. Since these tasty dinners are from our great volunteers at 2202, there may be a week or two where nothing is planned. Niles Brooks - Buckingham Estates Arthur Carlson - Haven Health Rich Haugh - Home recovering after surgery Lodge of Sorrows The clock of his days has stopped, his journey through eternity commenced. We wish him an enjoyable and safe voyage and shall recall his virtues when the dial of night strikes Eleven. Peace be with GREGG WATTS Range Committee Due to the storm last Thursday night there was no meeting. Wishing all members a good hunting season and remember, Safety First! Reminder, meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month. Eugene Tucceri Chairman During the month of October we had some great dinners and a big thank you is due to Troy Davidson, The French Duo Martin Saindon & Dick Bernier, and Joyce Leister. Thanks for your efforts! If you would like to help or have any ideas please contact the Exalted Ruler. The Annual Members Christmas Party is still in the planning stages as of press time. Check out the website and your for more details in the coming weeks. If you have not visited the Lodge in sometime, you may be shocked as the Trustees continue to improve our facilities. The latest endeavor is the remodeling of the Ladies Restroom in the lounge area. This process should be completed in a few weeks, just in time for the busy months of our Lodge! Beer of the Month Samuel Adams Octoberfest The first thing you notice when pouring a glass of this seasonal beer is the color. A rich, deep golden amber hue which itself is reflective of the season. A malt lover's dream, masterfully blending together five roasts of barley to create a delicious harmony of sweet flavors including caramel and toffee. The beer is kept from being overly sweet by the elegant bitterness imparted by the German Noble hops. As always we appreciate your patronage! Ghost Writer House Committee
5 PER Association News Over the past several years our Lodge has prospered in membership. We have received awards for something that most Lodges struggle with. Being the current Secretary and done so in the past, I have the unfortunate task of dropping members at the end of the year for nonpayment of dues. This process is troublesome to me, as I can t figure out why individuals who may have been a member for as little as a year don't pay. I m aware of the financial issues some may have, but we rarely hear from those members who may need assistance. Additionally, when our current State President recently visited our Lodge, he stated he was once a member of our Lodge and eventually demitted to his current Lodge. His reason, his sponsor did not get him involved and he felt like a stray Elk. So many new members I meet speak of how they want to get involved. But after initiation, we hardly ever see them again; most simply using the great attributes our Lodge has to offer. If you propose someone, be there for them throughout the entire membership process. Once they have joined our great organization, help them to get involved in. Guide them so they too don't feel like a stray Elk and help make our Lodge stronger with quality members! The Lodge will always need volunteers, Officers, and committee members. Remember we are an Elks Lodge first. This Month s Contributor Propositions For Membership ELKS CARE ELKS SHARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC If you have your own shotgun, bring it! If you don't have your own one will be available for you to borrow. Eye and ear protection are recommended and can be purchased on site, as well as ammo. Open to all levels...from first time to expert! Every Sunday September thru April at 11am Weather permitting! The Secretary s Office has received an application on the following individuals, read their names on the floor of our Lodge, and have forwarded them to the Investigation Committee for further processing. In accordance with Grand Lodge Statutes, any member knowing why any of these candidates should not be duly elected to membership, should notify a member of the Investigation Committee or one of the Lodge Officers. Each will be balloted on during a regularly scheduled meeting.
