Christmas Carol Sing The annual Carol Sing, in memory of Saville Shuttleworth, gathered a slightly smaller audience than last year but was deemed to be a very enjoyable evening despite the fact that various types of flu resulted in three cancellations shortly before and during the event. 1 P a g e

2 The Dulcisono Women's Choir was the signature performance, though everyone was left in awe by the solo voice of Lisa Pike who sang the much loved Christmas classic 'O, Holy Night'. Over $800 was collected for the Christmas Cheer Fund. A special thanks to all the performers who volunteered their time and talents to make the event a success, and a thank you to Jenny and her two helpers Brian and Lyn, for organizing the details. Salvation Army Kettles A big thank you to the 23 members who have bravely stood for a two hour shift and have smiled and thanked shoppers as they placed money in the kettle in the lobby of the Superstore. Thank you too to Andrea from the Satellite Club, Scott Harris, a former member and Joanne Badanai for filling vacant shifts. A thank you to Brian, too, for handling the shift schedule and filling in where necessary. Editor's Note. Many of us consistently wished the givers and passers-by a Merry Christmas, and to my knowledge, no black looks or complaints were received. Methinks that the 'six' citizens holding the nation to ransom and insisting upon Happy Holidays are not customers at the Superstore. A Happy Christmas to all. Rotary Foundation Time As the end of the year approaches, members who wish to have donations to the Foundation appear on their 2012 tax returns, are reminded to contact Karl, who will ensure that any cheques dated in 2012 will be mailed in time. Our Club members are not obligated to support the Foundation (as they are in some clubs), but many see the opportunity to contribute to the success of a great variety of worthwhile projects that are ongoing around the world. An added incentive for many is the slip year financing system used by Rotary, whereby every penny of our dollar ends up being used for the purpose for which it was given. This is in appalling contrast to the many charities where (if one researches it), a lot less than 50% of ones donation actually reaches the field. Meeting of December 19 th Greeting everyone at the door for the Family Christmas party was Sergeant-at-Arms, Joan Krisko. While waiting for the party to begin, the children decorated Christmas ornaments at the craft table and took part in a scavenger hunt that involved various members of the Club who were wearing fancy Christmas tags. President Irene opened the festivities with a warm welcome to all. Three people in attendance were also celebrating special occasions. Walter Seaberg and his wife, Chris, were celebrating their forty-second wedding anniversary. 2 P a g e

3 The Ambassadorial Scholar, Haruka Ono, was celebrating her birthday. She received a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday and blew out the candles on her cake. Everyone enjoyed a great meal of salads, chicken, perogies, cabbage rolls, and a wide variety of desserts. Musician Rodney Brown provided the entertainment for the evening. and led everyone in the singing of Christmas carols. Children and adults danced along to the music. With the singing of the song, Here Comes Santa Claus, the jolly man himself and Mrs. Claus came into the room to the delight of the excited children. Santa handed out the presents and the evening came to a close. 3 P a g e

4 Thank you to President Irene and Fiona Skogstad for organizing this wonderful party! Everyone, especially the children, enjoyed themselves! In a post dinner announcement Jenny Phillips thanked all of those who helped to make the Christmas Carol Sing on December 16 a success. Brian Phillips did all of the Power Point. Lyn McInnis looked after the posters. President Irene and President-Elect Jodi spoke during the service. Joan Krisko led the Rotary Choir in singing. Sharon Badanai, Cynthia Judge, and Clint Harris did the readings. Marianne Wahl played the harp. Dave Murray, Jodi Phillips, Terry Cameron, and Sante Sottile were the ushers. Boris Cham, Jodi Phillips, and Terry Cameron were the auditors. Next Week Note that the meeting between Christmas and New Year is cancelled. The meeting of January 2 nd will focus on the Club's Vision Statement and President Irene asks that members bring their 'thinking caps' and to be prepared to have some fun too.
