We were all very busy in August and September and that produced great results. In late August a pig roast organized by Mike Dondi was enjoyed by many. Volunteers began slow-cooking the two pigs the night before the event. Others helped with carving the pork, side dishes, and as always working behind the scenes. The Chili Blues Band played music to dance to late into the night as jello shots disappeared. This was a wonderful party and I know we all look forward to the next one. The Annual Charity Motorcycle Poker Run was part of another busy weekend. Riders enjoyed the beautiful weather cruising the countryside and returning to the pavilion for hot food, music, raffles and lots of fun. The bike committee did a great job organizing this successful event which requires a lot of donated time and is never an easy task. To John, George, Mike, Darren and the rest of the gang, thanks for the hard work! On the same weekend as the bike run, 100 Elks from the Woonsocket RI Lodge rolled in on two buses. They were on a weekend Elks tour and selected our Lodge as their last stop before heading home. We treated them to snacks while they bellied up to the bar and the pull-tab machine. They enjoyed their visit and thanked us for our hospitality. Thank you, to those that helped with the purchase & preparation of the food and the cleanup. Just so no one ever feels left out, I try to recognize all the hard working Elks participating in our many activities. Mon. Thurs. 4 PM Close Friday 3 PM Close Saturday 12 PM Close Sunday 12 PM Close Permittee: Lee Littlefield But often there s too many to remember so if I don t write your name I apologize, but when I mention Volunteers that means you. You re all greatly appreciated and the lodge thanks you! Tip of the Antlers: Ken Sylvester for seeing that the Veterans attending the Big E had scooters to ride in. Dennis Claffey, PER and all the early rising volunteers for there tasty Sunday breakfasts. Elk of the Month Jim Shaw For a plumber, Jim has some great carpentry skills and put it to work by renovating the foyer and office. Thanks Jim! Fraternally, Stephen Del Rosso Exalted Ruler
2 CHARITY JUSTICE BROTHERLY LOVE FIDELITY From the Secretary s Desk We recently had the District Deputy and his Suite make their official visit to our Lodge. Thanks to all the members that stayed for the initiation; special thanks to Theresa Shaw, Michael Perleoni, PER, Dennis G. Claffey, PER, Martin Saindon, and Dick Bernier for helping me with the setup, food, and dreaded clean-up! As I have stated before in this newsletter, our Office is essentially a broom closet. Well, with the help of Jim Shaw, Martin Saindon, and Dick Bernier, we made it little less claustrophobic. It s amazing what some fresh paint, new cabinets and carpet can do after 30 years; thanks guys! Now on to the fun stuff. We still have about 25 delinquent members. If you don't plan on renewing please let me know ASAP. We understand in these economic times it can be tough. We don't want to lose you as a member, so feel free to contact the ER or myself should you have concerns. REMINDER! Lodge meetings in November and December are held on the First & Third Wednesdays at 7pm. Finally, our last class consisted of 14 candidates; congratulations to those new members! That is a big class to come into our Lodge and we will be having another one before the end of the year. Consider attending and supporting our Exalted Ruler. Fraternally, Erik Witham, PER Secretary Propositions For Membership The Secretary s Office has received an application on the following individuals, read their names on the floor of our Lodge, and have forwarded them to the Investigation Committee for further processing. In accordance with Grand Lodge Statutes, any member knowing why any of these candidates should not be duly elected to membership, should notify a member of the Investigation Committee or one of the Lodge Officers. Each will be balloted on during a regularly scheduled meeting. The Lodge has begun its Sunday Breakfast events, and thank you to all the members and their guests who have begun to make this event a profitable one again for us. Of course I would be remiss if I didn't thank all the wonderful volunteers who makes it happen, and I hope I don't miss anyone: Bruce Lester, Mark Curtin, Martin Saindon, Doug and Louise Beeghly, Dave Poulin, Dan Vallier, and Dave Volpe! One change from last year to this year will be the 'weekends' we will hold them on. At this point, we will begin to have them the second and fourth Sunday's of the month. So, the following is a quick glimpse of those coming up: October 4th & 18th, November 8th & 22nd, December 13th, January 10th & 24th 2010 Chairman MDA Run 2 The Sun On Monday, September 7th, the Lodge once again donated the pavilion for the use of the annual Run to the Sun motorcycle ride held in conjunction with MDA's Labor Day activities. We supplied the riders with breakfast sandwiches and coffee. I'd like to thank those that supported the event with me again this year; the Bryan's (family friend non-members), Martin Saindon, Mike Dondi, and behind the scenes giving me support was Dave Poulin! Thanks all!
4 CHECK US OUT ON THE WEB! - ELKS2202.ORG House Committee News Now that the summer is behind us, and with some internal changes, the HC is looking forward to a very successful year. Of course we could not do that without each and every one of you who continue to stop by and support the club room. Thank You! Fall Season Now Underway! OPEN TO THE PUBLIC If you have your own shotgun, bring it! If you don't have your own one will be available for you to borrow. Eye and ear protection are recommended and can be purchased on site, as well as ammo. Open to all levels...from first time to expert! Every Sunday September thru April at 11am Weather permitting! We would also like to thank the many volunteers that have been behind the scenes completing the tasks necessary to run the club room and dinners during the summer. With that in mind, we will now have a more planned Friday Night Dinner schedule. One dinner a month, and the first taking place on October 23rd at 6:30PM. So stop up and enjoy a turkey dinner for only $8 p.p. ($5 for children under 10). Volunteers Needed! October 17th, the Lodge will once again host the Antique Car Show which brings to the grounds some 800 people. We are in need of volunteers for two shifts. We will begin serving food at 10AM; however, we'll need some of you there beforehand, and of course, for after the cooking is done at 7PM. The shifts will be from 8AM-2PM and 2PM to 8PM. Now, we understand not all the volunteers can give us six hours, but if you are willing to assist us in anyway, we'll be more than happy to have you join us. There is a signup sheet at the bar, please consider volunteering some of your time. Finally, the House Committee is currently preparing to schedule the annual Members Christmas Party. We will keep you up-to-date on this and other activities forthcoming from the House Committee. 5 Range Committee Claffey, PER ELKS CARE ELKS SHARE Hunting season is upon us and everyone is sighting in their weapons, if they haven't done so already. Remember SAFETY first, there are other people in the woods. Additionally, those wishing to hunt on the property must have a completed CT DEP Consent form signed by Dennis Friday October 23rd 6:30pm Although the year is not over, the committee is already making plans for next year. The first event will be David Holmes' great antique gun show. This annual event has done well for the Lodge. As well as being a great social event, it is a walk through time with some of the most knowledgeable antique gun dealers in New England. A place to find old parts, identify that gun you found in the attic, sell a pre 1898 weapon or take the kids out for the afternoon for your wife. It has also brought in over a thousand dollars into the lodge each year. A firm date has not been set, but it will be around the beginning of March. The Monday night pistol "Stick Bust" has been a great success. Thanks to all who have supported this fun event! Again, I want to stress SAFETY this hunting season and wish all good luck Reminder, meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month. Turkey Dinner Includes stuffing, mashed potatoes, veggies, and homemade dessert $8 for adults $5 for kids under 10 years of age Eugene Tucceri Chairman
