1 Beaverdam UMC & Rouzie s Chapel UMC: Two Amazing Churches, One Awesome God 2017 JULY-AUGUST Issue 6 Dear Church Family, Two of my favorites childhood memories of summertime involve my grandparents front porch and my home church s chapel (which was the original church before the larger sanctuary was built in the early 1960 s). When you are a child, life as you know it is just that life as you know it. We don t realize what we have (or in some cases don t have) because what is right before us is what we know; and what we presume the rest of life is like. As we mature and move beyond our childhood circle of understanding we look back with insights that we missed when we lived them. So it is with me and my childhood memories. Summer time on the 100 block of North Brunswick Avenue in South Hill, Virginia was open season for rocking chairs, tall glasses of lemonade, homemade popsicles and tons of local community gossip. Every night, rain or shine, the neighbors gathered on one or another front porch and talked with each other until the lightening bugs came out and the darkness fell. It was just life as I knew it. But when I look back, I realize it was intergenerational interaction every night April through October. Every night all ages sitting around one another talking. One summer my home church, South Hill United Methodist, produced a youth musical entitled Tell It Like It Is. Our current UMC hymn #572 Pass It On was a part of that musical. It included guitars and folk songs which were new to the church at that point. I was too young to be included in the musical but my older brother and sister were not, and they both joined in the practices and the performances. I remember hanging out in the chapel of the church waiting for them to finish practice so we could all go home. But, What does any of that have to do with life in 2017 in Western Hanover County?, you might ask. As our new bishop, Sharma Lewis, would say, I m glad you asked! Both of those experiences from my childhood were just my life as a child. But as I look back on them now, two major things were going on around me. I was daily interacting with people of all ages who took time to hear me, talk to me and share life with me. Secondly, I witnessed the church being stretched to let guitars and folk songs be used in the decades old, very traditional chapel of the church. The seeds of willingness to think outside the box on the part of the adults of South Hill UMC were planted in my heart. To this day I look for ways to include our youth and young adults, along with the older generations, as we interact with each around the gospel of Jesus Christ. Which leads me to our July and August sermon series this summer. We are going to dialogue with one another on July 16, 23 and 30 about our remembrances of Christianity in America during our own growing up years. We will take 30 year spans of ; and So start reminiscing with yourself about what you remember from one of those 3 periods in which you grew up. Then in August we are going to examine some of the music of the church through the years that has been used to inspire the church to be relevant to the then current culture and its challenges. It is time that we as a church got to know one another better. It is time that we as a church got to hear each other s stories and learned from each other s insights. We are going to know each other better before the end of the summer of My prayer is that some day along about 2067 some man or woman will write an article and say, when I was a child I worshipped on the West Hanover Charge and one summer we spent the summer sermon series talking to each other about our faith young, old and all in between. It could happen! With transforming hope, Claudia Contacting Pastor Stallings: Church: Home: Cell: beaverdamumc@embarqmail.com

5 5 Thought for the month: News from the Pews Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. Robert Louis Stevenson W.H.E.A.T. ROUZIE S CHAPEL JOYFUL NOISE Our help both with financial donations and food pantry items are needed badly; especially with pasta (any type) and spaghetti sauce. We have done an excellent job in maintaining the supply of these items needed to meet W.H.E.A.T. s monthly needs for distribution. Thanks to all for your generosity. UNIQUE MINISTRY The group is busy on our fundraiser. We're building and painting birdhouses and bird feeders and hope to have some ready to sell within the month. Thank you for all your spiritual and financial support. BLESSING BOX Rouzie s has a blessing box to collect gently used clothing & toiletries for the men at New Life Ranch. Right now, there is a big need for soap, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, shaving cream and razors. Many of these men show up at the Ranch without anything to call their own so anything you can help with is greatly appreciated. Keep them coming! Ladies of the A.O.L. (Afghans of ) Join us on July 30th in praising the Lord with the beautiful string sound and song of Joyful Noise. They will be playing during our church service at Rouzie s as well as at BUMC at 6:00 p.m. during the Community Sing. If you haven't heard them before, you must come and experience the uplifting sound and praise of His Glory. You will be glad you did! We will also need to focus on whether we will be doing New Life stockings this year as our funds are getting lower. A huge thank you to all who have recently donated! We can t do what we do without you. If interested in either donating or joining our group, you can contact Nancy Parke any time. You can reach Nancy on her cell (540) or floralfool416@aol.com. 7 7 Deliveries The Fork Church 39.0 Rouzie's Chapel/Beaverdam UMC Church of our Savior 70.0 Total Seven more deliveries in June, and we are still cutting, splitting and replenishing our wood yards. We have been blessed with a lot of oak and maple donations to the Wood Ministry and the donations keep coming in. We have a backlog of 3 jobs waiting for us. We will continue to cut, split and deliver wood this summer as long as we have a place to put it. The West Hanover Wood Ministry was organized in We started keeping better records in Since 2008 we have delivered the equivalent of approximately 1,925 truckloads of wood. On June 30 th we will close out our fiscal year. During the year we have provided wood to 65 families. The Wood Ministry teams with West Hanover Emergency Action Team (WHEAT) who provides 24/7 Hot Line assistance to our families. In addition to helping the Wood Ministry, WHEAT also runs a Food Pantry, assists families with utility and medical bills and on occasion will even help pay rent. July 1 st we start our new year. Have a great 4 th of July and summer. We will report back in the September Circuit Writer how our summer went. Chimney Sweep Program Where did spring go to? Our spring Chimney Sweep Program just turned into our summer program. Rouzie s Chapel and Beaverdam UMC will be teaming with The Fork Church in Doswell, and Church of Our Saviour in Montpelier again this year to clean and inspect approximately 30 chimneys this summer. We are seeking to partner with a Chimney Sweep business that will clean, inspect, and, if necessary, repair chimneys at a reasonable cost. Your generous support to the Wood Ministry s Chicken BBQ, donations, and grants from Rappahannock Electric Co-Op have made this potentially lifesaving service available to our families possible. Thank You!!! The Friendship Book This is one of the most fascinating facts from the space program. Accelerating takes the Space Shuttle into a higher, slower, orbit around the Earth, while decelerating causes the shuttle to fall into a tighter, faster orbit. So, slowing down actually makes it go faster. In a way it s the same with family life. When our lives are full speed ahead our relationships slow down. But when we put our foot on the brake, slowing down, we actually get far more of the important stuff done. Perhaps that s why grandparents are so out of this world when it comes to families! Want to join the Wood Ministry? If you would like to help with cutting, splitting, and delivering wood to our Wood Ministry families contact Fredy Calderon at or axc609@gmail.com or Dick Lear at , rblear1@gmail.com. Deliveries are usually made on Wednesday and/or Saturday mornings. A couple hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to one of our family s lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our Wood Ministry with your time & talent, trucks, chainsaws, gas & oil, donations and the camaraderie and fellowship you provide to our group.
8 8 4th of July Parade Beaverdam UMC will be open that morning on Tuesday, July 4th from 8:30 a.m. until the parade begins at 10 a.m. to offer free water and access to the bathrooms for the parade entries as they line up and wait for the start of the parade. Come help hand out water and point the way to the potties! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL & CHARGE-WIDE PICNIC The weekend of July 14th -16th we will hold Vacation Bible School and in August we celebrate with a Chargewide picnic and joint Administrative Council meeting on Sunday, Aug. 13th. The schedule is as follows: Friday, July 14th 6:00 p.m. through Saturday, July 15th 3:00 p.m. VBS & Youth Lock-In Sunday, Aug. 13th 1:30 p.m. Joint Administration Council Meeting (with both churches) Noon Charge-wide Picnic (BUMC & Rouzie s Chapel combined) at BUMC Pavilion COMMUNITY HYMN SING Sunday, July 30th at 6:00 p.m. the West Hanover Charge will host the community-wide 5th Sunday Hymn Sing at Beaverdam UMC. Choirs from eight area churches will come together and offer two songs each. There is always wonderful music, inspiring fellowship and delicious food afterwards. Mark your calendars and come enjoy the fun. VIRGINIA UMC ANNUAL CONFERENCE Fredy Calderon, our Lay Delegate, and Pastor Claudia attended Annual Conference June in Hampton. Our bishop, Bishop Lewis, has given us a new thing, a new vision for the 4 years she will serve us as our bishop. We will be hearing a lot more about this vision in the weeks and months ahead but for now, we share it to let you see it in print: A Disciple of Jesus Christ Is a lifelong learner Who influences others To serve Seeing this vision in print and saying it out loud to ourselves are only the first of many, many steps we will take to implement and live into this new thing, this new vision. But guess what, West Hanover Charge? Our God promises to take EVERY STEP alongside us. So let s get moving!

Now the reason I picked this verse is so we can talk about "change". In my 72 years there have been many changes as you can figure. Some changes have been good and some I have refused to abide by. Texting and using the cell phone with all the different apps is really above my capabilities. I am a land line; talk to me type of clown. We all change when we communicate. When I lower my head and talk to God - that is communicating. When I hand write a get well, or happy birthday card - that is communicating well wishes. When I hug someone - that is communicating my love. When I have my angels up doing sign language - that is because I am trying to learn to communicate. All of us communicate in different ways. AOL communicate their love with their talents of knitting. Wood fairies communicate their love with the labor of working with wood. The pastor communicates her love with words and hugs and prayers. And all of you communicate your love in so many other ways that God uses. Have a safe and fun summer. Love, Ju G J for Joy, little u for under, and capital G for God.
