1 Dear Church Family, Beaverdam UMC & Rouzie s Chapel UMC: Two Amazing Churches, One Awesome God 2014 JULY-AUGUST Issue 7 I am so thankful that I misunderstood! The gift of hearing is both interesting and challenging. I just returned from the Virginia UMC Annual Conference (shout out to Nancy Lear who represented the West Hanover Charge as our lay delegate) where we were privileged to ask God to renew us with Your Spirit. A main activity during annual conference is to listen which we did. But truly listening involves understanding what is being said. At one point, I did not properly understand; and I am so thankful that I didn t! On Sunday morning the speaker was talking about renewal and revival in our Virginia conference churches. But the way the sound reached my ears the v s in revival sounded like b s instead. So it seemed that he has said that we needed our churches to experience renewal and re-bible. My brow furrowed, I tried to determine if that is indeed what he meant. Then I realized the word had been revival. Although I had never realized that revival and re-bible sound similar, re-bible was very fitting to our church s needs. I know, re-bible is not technically a word. But then Google wasn t a word either 15 years ago! So if Google can become both a noun and a verb, then I say re- Bible can become a word too. So I came home recognizing that renewal and revival must begin with a return to the Word of God written in the Holy Scriptures and spoken in prayer. Prayer and a return to the study of, meditation upon and sharing of the truths of the Biblical text will be the best foundation we could possibly lay for renewal and revival of our churches, our conference and our denomination. The apostle Paul agrees. In 2 Timothy 3:16. Paul writes to his son in the faith, Timothy, these words: You have been taught the Holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. We could all use some re-bibling this summer. Let s get outside in our hammock, sit on the front porch with a glass of lemonade or set up our beach chair with our toes in the ocean and open the book of all books and let God prepare and equip us to do His work in the world! Amen so be it! With transforming hope, Claudia FLYING SQUIRRELS FAITH NIGHT: Let's go out to the ball park! Thursday, August 7th is Faith Night at the Flying Squirrels home game. Gates open at 6 p.m. and game starts at 7:05 p.m. Pre-game that night there will be player testimonies, a Christian band and then fireworks to end the night. If we get more than 20 people signed up to go... it's $5 a person! What a bargain! NOTE: The Stallings will be on vacation June 30 - July 6 and again July 25 - August 2. Yay God! If you need to reach Pastor Claudia during this time, please call Martha Slayton ( ) or Nancy Lear ( ) and they will get your message to her. 6 6 335 The Wood Ministry wrapped up its most successful year ever, in its 10 years of existence, on June 30 th. The Wood Ministry delivering 335 truckloads of wood between July 2013 and June 2014, our fiscal year. The big push in May and June working at Sherry McEvoy s alpaca farm yielded 53 truckloads of firewood that were all delivered to our families in preparation for this fall. Many thanks to all who have supported or participated in our Wood Ministry. Without your dedicated support our 69 families we supported in may not have been as warm or able to cook their meals. I received a telephone call in early spring from a Pastor of a church thanking us for wood we delivered to one of his members stating that it literally saved his life. Yes, the Wood Ministry does make a difference. We ve had to cancel one work day for hot weather and I anticipate we will have to do that more as the humidity and temperature in July and August go up. The Wood Ministry is currently caught up with all our cutting and splitting. If you have a hardwood tree you would like to donate to the Wood Ministry, please contact Dick Lear or Fredy Calderon at the numbers listed below. Want to join the Wood Ministry? If you would like to help with cutting, splitting, and delivering wood to our Wood Ministry families contact Fredy Calderon at , axc609@gmail.com or Dick Lear at , rblear1@gmail.com. Deliveries are usually made on Wednesday and/or Saturday mornings. A couple hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to one of our family s lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our Wood Ministry with your time & talent, trucks, chainsaws, gas & oil, donations and the camaraderie and fellowship you provide to our group. The Friendship Book How do you change a life? With the gifts you have. Music teacher Peter probably didn t think the lessons he gave at a reform school would do much good. Most of the boys there had already been in trouble with the law and would, perhaps, get into even more. What difference could music lessons make? Well, one of those boys was called Louis Armstrong. Peter certainly changed Satchmo s life! How do you change a life? You take the gifts you have, you share them and let God do the rest.

THE GREAT NAME - Pére Didon JESUS CHRIST is the great name in history. There are others for whom men have died; He alone is adored by all people, in all nations, and in all times. He who bears this name is known throughout the world. Even among the savage and degenerate tribes of the human race, His apostles preach without ceasing that He died upon the cross; and the offscourings of mankind may be saved by loving Him. Those who are neutral, in the modern world, recognize that none is better for the weak and miserable. The greatest intellects of the past would be forgotten if memorials, as palaces, obelisks or tombs; if written testimonies, as papyrus or parchments, bricks, columns or medals, had not preserved their memory. Jesus survives in the conscience of the faithful: there is His witness and indestructible monument. The Church founded by Him fills time and space with His name. She knows Him, she loves Him, she adores Him. We are never real without a name. God, in the Old Testament, gave Moses his name in terms of his being. When Moses asks God for a name, God says simply, I am who I am (Exodus 3:4). But the birth story of Matthew declares that an angel appears to Joseph with the particular instruction that he is to name the boy Jesus, or Joshua (Matthew 1:21). Joshua means Jehova saves in Hebrew. It is by this highly significant name that Jesus is reverenced worldwide. His proper name in Hebrew would have been Jesus bar Joseph, or Jesus the son of Joseph. Box 67 Beaverdam, Va JUG s CORNER Hi Girls and Boys, Genesis 37:3 "Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age and he made a richly ornamented robe for him." Now, most of you know Jug has a hat made from many different colors and everybody has a different hat. There are baseball caps, work caps, hard hats, helmets, formal hats, wood fairy hats, religious head gear, crowns and funny hats. Unfortunately, Jesus was made to wear a crown that you and I would never want to wear. His crown was made of thorns. Now, it is not the type of hat that people wear that is so important but, it is important to use what is under the hat the way our heavenly father would want us to. Love, laugh, and leave your problems to Jesus. JuG Articles in this issue: Letter from the Pastor July-August 2014 Calendars West Hanover Wood Ministry News from the Pews Time for Some Fun...
