2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET
2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET HADDONFIELD UMC Inspire, Connect, and Empower Along the Faith Journey In a time where the world seems to be on edge as people are more divided than ever along partisan lines, where previous forms of community are splintering at the edges, we are finding that God is using Haddonfield United Methodist Church as a lighthouse church for people longing to be in community and transform the world. More and more, people are finding Haddonfield UMC to be place where they can come together across generations, even across political and theological lines, to connect to one another. Children are finding adopted parents and mentors, and people of all ages are finding a sense of family connection with unlikely friends. We are seeking to do our best at integrating tradition along with finding new ways to inspire people in their personal faith journey, to connect people to one another and with God, and to empower people to use their individual gifts inside and outside the church to transform the world.!1
2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET HADDONFIELD UMC Inspiration The word inspire, from its Latin roots inspirare, literally means to breathe in. To inspire is to breathe in, and we see throughout scripture how the very breath we draw in is God s own Spirit. Just as God gave breath to people through God s own spirit, we are a church that seeks to give breath to nurture and provide inspiration through the sharing and receiving of gifts such as music, worship participation, preaching, and service. As a church, we offer inspiration through regular concert series, sermons, daily reflections, weekly worship experiences, classes, and small group guides. We seek to give people content and experiences to breathe in so that they are strengthened for daily life. Connection A threefold cord is not quickly broken. With these words from Ecclesiastes 4:12, the Bible reminds us of the power of connection, whether things are going well or we find ourselves facing challenges. We were not created to be alone, but to be in connection and relationship with other people and all of creation. As a church, we are a place where people!2
2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET HADDONFIELD UMC find unlikely connections. People here find mentors and teachers, adopted family members and new friendships, as well as support networks they might not find elsewhere. All of our connections are rooted in our connection with God. Empowerment God has gifted every person in his or her own right, despite their ability and background. We seek to help people identify, nurture, and use their gifts for service to God and to one another. Our church identifies and equips people to serve within the congregation and other partner organizations in our community, connecting peoples interests and gifts to one another. Rooted in a strong understanding that disciples make other disciples, part of!3
2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET HADDONFIELD UMC empowerment is also developing leadership within individuals and identifying roles and opportunities for them to lead others. Our congregation makes an incredible impact in our members lives and in our local community. How is all of this ministry made possible? One individual or family chooses to give a gift, according to what God has gifted and called them to give, and that gift is combined with other gifts of varying amounts. They are then combined with staff efforts and the time and talents of volunteers, which greatly multiplies what we are able to do as a church. People also do individual fundraising for mission trips and partnerships. This all adds up to a vital, transformational church that has immense capacity to be a significant agent of transformation in the world.!4
People pledge their support for a given year, then give at that level and support other efforts. All of the gifts of our church members and friends that we receive through offerings and donations add up to empower ministry. Our ministry efforts can be seen through the lens of our ministry model: We embody the love of Christ through grace-filled community, inspired worship and transformational mission. Every dollar spent is designated to either community, worship, or mission ministries, as well as our facilities, which serve as a powerful agent of ministry. Our facilities make an incredible impact in our local community by housing events, non-profit board meetings, recovery group meetings, scouting ministries, and more. We use our facilities as a place of inspiration, connection, and empowerment to the local community and beyond by hosting concert series, outside groups, weddings, and funerals.!5
2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET HADDONFIELD UMC In this document you will see our budget broken up into four ministry areas: worship, mission, community, and facilities. Each staff person s time has also been allocated by percentage to these four areas. In each heading, we will highlight other types of ministries that are made possible by the financial support of members and friends. Community Worship Forming relationships that reflect the love of God creates a special form of community, one that is caring, forgiving, welcoming and affirming. At HUMC, we live out community in a variety of ways. Worship can bring us into a transformational encounter with God. At HUMC, we offer multiple expressions through different styles and at different times, all unified by God s Spirit. Mission Facilities The love we receive from God energizes us to reach out to the world to share the good news in many ways. Mission is simply another word for how we join God through faith in action and act on the love and hope we have received through Christ. HUMC is blessed with beautiful facilities, entrusted to us by previous generations to use for ministry. The facilities and grounds are an enormous asset for inviting the surrounding community into our Christian fellowship.!6
2017 NARRATIVE BUDGET HADDONFIELD UMC The considerable value of volunteer time and in-kind donations to Community, Worship, Mission, and Facilities & Grounds are not included in these budget presentations, but work together with our budget to empower transformational ministry. It is not easy to measure the value of young people confirming their faith and relationships formed through small groups, the transformation that happens when people are sent out in mission locally and globally, or celebrate the generosity that heats and cools our facilities for worship and provides beautiful music that inspires. The ministry that happens at Haddonfield UMC is only possible through the generous giving of members and friends. Since those financial commitments are the foundation for our budget, we want you to see how your giving supports the ministries we value and enables the stories of transformation, grace, and inspiration that we hear Budget by Ministry Area Ministry Area Cost Grace-Filled Community $ 289,560 Inspired Worship $ 317,137 Transformational Mission $ 344,714 Facilities & Grounds $ 427,446 Total $ 1,378,857 Worship Community Mission Facilities & Grounds!7
