1 Beaverdam UMC & Rouzie s Chapel UMC: Two Amazing Churches, One Awesome God 2016 MARCH Issue 2 Dear Church Family, All the words of scripture are powerful but some can take our breath away when we stop to really think about them. Luke s gospel gives us two verses that do just that. Luke 9:22 The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things, Jesus said. He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead. Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost. Jesus predicts His rejection by the religious leaders, His death and His resurrection. Then later in Luke s gospel Jesus explains the purpose behind it all that He might seek and save those who are lost. This month we will journey through the events of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Resurrection. As we do so, we too can focus on what it all is for. It is for us who are lost and in need of being sought out and saved. All Jesus went through is for us. Salvation. Rescue. Being sought. Being found. Resurrection. Rather than taking our breath away, it actually lets us breathe freely for the first time in possibly a very long time. Like a true breath of fresh spring air. HOW TO REACH NEW PEOPLE UPDATE: During February we reached out to our community through the Community Pancake Supper and also through the imposition of ashes at Food Lion in Montpelier on Ash Wednesday. Both were great opportunities to know our neighbors better. We loved hosting the free pancakes and then offering the holy ashes to those not able to come to a worship service that day. The services of Holy Week (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunrise and Worship Services) are more opportunities for us to invite, pick up and bring our friends and neighbors with us to church. Often people are just waiting to be invited to join us. Who will you invite this year? Thurs., March 24 th Fri., March 25 th Sun., March 27 th With transforming Easter hope, Claudia SCOUTING SUNDAY Sunday, March 13th is Scouting Sunday at Beaverdam UMC! The Girl Scout/ Brownie troop that we sponsor will worship with us that day and participate in the worship service. Make sure to come celebrate these young women. We have big plans in the works! Thank you for all your spiritual and financial support. W.H.E.A.T. Our help both with financial donations and food pantry items are needed badly; especially with pasta (any type) and spaghetti sauce. We have done an excellent job in maintaining the supply of these items needed to meet W.H.E.A.T. s monthly needs for distribution. Thanks to all for your generosity. Keep it coming! BLESSING BOX Rouzie s has a Blessing Box to collect gently used men s clothing and new assorted tolietries that can be given to the men at New Life Ranch. There is also a need this month for twin sheets and comforters/bed spreads. Many of these men show up at the Ranch without anything to call their own so anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. Keep them coming! Ladies of the A.O.L. 6 6 159 After a slow start to wood deliveries this past fall, due to warm weather, activity in the Wood Ministry has picked up a lot. Just before the big snow the phone was ringing off the hook. Everyone wanted a load of firewood before the snow storm hit. Rouzie s Chapel, The Fork Church, and Church of our Saviour wood yards delivered 22 truckloads of firewood during the three days leading up to the snow storm. With cold temperatures and wintery weather, wood requests remain brisk. We probably will not set a new delivery record this season and we will definitely not run out of wood, like we did last year. Rouzie s wood yard is still over half full and hopefully warmer spring weather is just around the corner. Here are our numbers for the season. We finally did finish cutting, splitting and hauling all the wood from Peggy May s before Valentine s day. All total we removed 25 truckloads of oak and poplar. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PEGGY MAY! Fredy Calderon helped a couple of Beaverdam youth obtain community service hours by having them restack the short piles of wood into tall piles. This reduces the amount of wood touching the ground which helps the wood dry faster. Keep Paul Flint, from Rouzie s Chapel, in your prayers as he recovers from a strained back as a result of cutting up logs in the wood yard with his chainsaw. To make matters worse he also caught a cold/bronchitis and the coughing exacerbated the back pain. Nurse Ratchet (aka Martha Flint) has been administering the cough and pain medication. Hope you are sleeping better Paul and get well soon. As soon as we get some dry weather the Wood Ministry can get back to work. We currently have seven jobs lined up to cut and split wood either for the families to burn or to haul back to the wood yard. We have been very blessed with a lot of wood donations this year. Want to join the Wood Ministry? Deliveries The Fork Church 27.0 Rouzie s Chapel/Beaverdam UMC 89.0 Church of our Saviour 43.0 Total If you would like to help with cutting, splitting, and delivering wood to our Wood Ministry families contact Fredy Calderon at or axc609@gmail.com or Dick Lear at , rblear1@gmail.com. Deliveries are usually made on Wednesday and/or Saturday mornings. A couple hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to one of our family s lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our Wood Ministry with your time & talent, trucks, chainsaws, gas & oil, donations and the camaraderie and fellowship you provide to our group. The Friendship Book Take two tablets and call me In the morning. Are there any benefits to growing older? Some people don t think so but, I don t agree. How could you work hard all those years, make all those mistakes, learn all those lessons, have your heart broken and healed again and not have something to show for it? These words from the Talmud [teaching or learning text of Rabbinic Judaism] are worth thinking about:. For the unlearned, it says, old age is winter; but for the learned it is the season of the harvest.
7 Fold the palm leaf down, About 5-6 from the bottom. Palm Leaf Cross Directions Still trying to figure it out? I know I had a time with mine. Don t worry, follow these instructions and I think you just might get it. Supplies: One palm leaf strip about in length, 1/2 width, tapering to the end. 7 Tuck in the tapered end of the palm leaf and pull it through. Turn the cross over. This is the front view. Sometimes, you just have to Bow your Head, Say a Prayer, and Weather the Storm. Answer to hidden object The SHAMROCK is hidden on page 6. At the top right of the page. It is right under the W in the Wood Ministry logo. 8 8 Beaverdam and Rouzie s Chapel United Methodist Church P. O. Box 67 Beaverdam, Va Hi Kids, KJV: Psalm 118:24 - "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." I know many of you are enjoying the snow that we are having at the time I am writing this letter. Unfortunately, I am not a great lover of snow at my age. This morning, I went to the barn to take care of Medico, Urbie, and the cats. I fell three times in the same spot and the horses just looked at me. Of course, I had to come in and change clothes and that was before breakfast. As a matter of fact, I use to be terrified when I heard the forecasters predict snow and ice. Well, this time I was much better and that was because of a suggestion my therapist gave me. "Every morning I get up and repeat Psalm 118:24". I do, and after each time I fell; I repeated it and I actually smiled on the way back to the house. How about you give it a try when you are being tested.
