1 Beaverdam UMC & Rouzie s Chapel UMC: Two Amazing Churches, One Awesome God 2014 APRIL Issue 4 Dear Church Family, As most of you already know I love summertime: warm weather, flip flops and sandals, long days filled with sunshine, trees and gardens lush with growth. I love beach weather even if I can t always be at the ocean. So this elongated wait for the arrival of Spring which will merge into summer this year has been frustrating and challenging. I always look forward to Spring. but never in my life as much as I have in 2014! Deep in my heart I know that I know that I know Spring will come and Summer will follow. So that gives me HOPE even in the face of a March 25 th forecast of snow showers. I have HOPE in the face of our relentless winter weather. The hesitancy of 2014 s Spring weather to arrive has reminded me of the spiritual waiting of Lent. Days of discipline, penitence, prayer and soul searching will lead us to re-live and remember the events of Palm Sunday s procession, Maundy Thursday s meal and Good Friday s pain and suffering. We will wait, we will re-live and we will remember. But in the midst of that challenge, in the heart of that waiting is the HOPE of our resurrected Christ. The HOPE of our sins forgiven, atonement made and resurrection displayed. Because of the faithfulness of our God, we know that we know that we know that in the face of our sinfulness and depravity there is the HOPE of new, redeemed, restorative life and life to the full. So don t give up and don t give in. Spring will come. It truly will. But far more importantly Easter s HOPE is just around the corner. We just have to wait for it. Mother Teresa 4 ROUZIE S CHAPEL Blessing Box: Rouzie s has a Blessing Box to collect used men s clothing in good condition and assorted toiletries that can be given to the men at New Life for Youth Ranch. Please, only men s Clothing & Toiletries. W.H.E.A.T. Our help both with financial donations and especially with the following food pantry items are needed badly: pasta (any type) and spaghetti sauce. Please continue to help us keep the reserve supply of these items in good numbers since they are so very important to so many families monthly. If you would like to add to your usual donation of your pasta and spaghetti sauce, with an occasional Hamburger Helper and/or a can of beans (of any kind), this would be an additional benefit to the growing numbers of families needing our help. 6 6 276 This is getting to be ridiculous. We can t seem to get rid of old man winter. He just keeps hanging on and our record setting numbers just keep going higher and higher. We are now up to 276 deliveries for the heating season, July 2013 through June At $75.00 a truckload that s $20, in firewood costs we have saved our 69 families. I think Rouzie s wood yard will be able to make it to the end of the cold season with seasoned firewood we have on hand, but we are definitely getting low and having to dig deep in the wood piles. We continue to cut and split most every week, but a lot of the wood in the wood yard is green. Green firewood will burn but you must have a nice hot fire of seasoned wood to get it started. With every 3 pieces of seasoned firewood you can also burn a piece or two of green firewood. However, you need to be careful that the moisture from the green wood does not create creosote, a dark brown to black flammable tar deposited inside a chimney flue when wood, especially pine or other resinous wood, is burned. Be sure to have your chimney cleaned regularly. Want to join the Wood Ministry? The Friendship Book No doubt we have all felt at times that we d like to be enjoying some leisure time far away from daily routine and not least, during weeks when cold and wet weather seem never ending. Milton Berle, the television and film comedian had an idea that I d like to share. Laughter, he said, is an instant vacation. It s true, isn t it? When someone makes you laugh, it takes you to a wonderful place, no matter where you might be at that moment. And, if that someone is a friend, then you can go on holiday together, even if only for a little while. 7 We praise God for the life of Carole Umbel and thank God for sharing her with the church families of Beaverdam and Rouzie s Chapel UMCs. Although we miss her presence here with us, we rejoice that she is with our Lord and enjoying His holy presence for eternity. Cancer and death lost.. Jesus won!! The Parable of the PC by Al Boyce In those days there were three computers, endowed equally by their makers with processing power, memory and addressable storage. But Satan corrupted each operating system with the sly installation of spyware, browser hijackers and security holes until there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The Maker, in His mercy, sent down His Holy Spirit to the despairing computers. The Holy Spirit appeared to each in the form of System Update to close the security holes and shore up the despairing software. It asked the question of each PC: Do you want to run System Update? and offering a checkbox saying "Always trust" the Maker. The first PC, fearing yet another infection, quickly closed the update window. Within hours, the spyware already on it called out to legions of viruses and malware until the system shut down completely. The second PC accepted the update, but was too frightened to check the "always trust" box. It sighed with relief as the Holy Spirit cleaned its systems and saved it from the worst of the demons. And it walked away with a false sense of security that it would be protected from future onslaughts. Within the month, spyware and malware crept back into the second PC and, before it could cry out to the Maker, it, too, crashed. The third PC gratefully accepted the update and, in a leap of faith, checked the "always trust" box. Like the second PC, it received the merciful update from its Maker and began to feel much better. And then, as days and weeks went by, the Maker sent the Holy Spirit unbidden to shore up the PC's systems -- even when the PC was unaware it was being attacked. Before long, the third PC was becoming famous among all its brethren for having the fewest problems, for working the fastest and for never seeming to worry when others crashed around it.
