1 The Clarion Volume 14, No. 24 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 6, 2018 Our Parish Mission Led by the Spirit, the Catholic community of Saint Anne strives to live the example of Jesus, who said, I came so that you might have life, and have it more abundantly. 2 WHAT A LITURGY DIRECTOR DOES (AND DOESN T) DO BY RORY COONEY OK, for starters, raise your hand if you re tired of me writing in the Clarion. (Mom? Terry? REALLY?) I came to Saint Anne in February of 1994, so I celebrated my 24th anniversary this past February, most of which I have served as both the Music and Liturgy Director of the parish. For the first few years, I worked with Courtney Murtaugh and Clem Aseron who did most of the liturgical heavy lifting and put on the liturgy hat when Courtney moved on to other work. Before coming to Saint Anne, I had been in a similar job at St. Jerome Parish in Phoenix, Arizona, near Peoria and I-17, for those of you who so intelligently spend your winters there. It was in Phoenix that I studied liturgy for two years under Fr. John Gallen, SJ, which is where I also met Gary Daigle and began that long relationship. Of course, I had studied liturgy in seminary, but Gallen s approach was to teach a pastoral liturgy course in the sense that the Second Vatican Council has imagined one, and he brought in experts in all kinds of fields, many of whom were his colleagues at Notre Dame or, as he loved to point out, former students. The idea was that, armed with this broad-based pastorally-oriented study of the liturgy of the church from its ecclesial and Christological sources through the whole range of sacraments, the divine office, sacred art and music and so on, a person could become a resource to his or her parish as a professional staff person (or a volunteer minister for that matter) and what amounted to a better liturgical background than most of our pastors had. For the most part, this worked, and with a handful of other cities, Phoenix became a place where, twenty years ago, there was a network of people who helped to cultivate the liturgical ministry in parishes. Now, all of that sounds fine, and pastors were genuinely happy to have trained religious and laypersons around to help do this sort of thing. We ended up doing the sort of work that would let priests do priest things, like visiting the sick, counseling and playing golf. (KIDDING!) What I want to get around to saying is, when it comes to liturgy, I don t really direct anything. I mean, Georgene and I do our best to see that scripts are accurate, ministers are recruited, trained and prepared, music is good, the church is lovely and all that, but that s not liturgy. In truth, the presider at each Mass directs the liturgy. You can argue about the pastor or the bishop or the pope doing it, but when the church gathers, the presider does the directing. The best accurate job title I can think of that describes what I do is Director of Lay Liturgical Ministries, though the choir might argue whether I m the director or misdirector. Then again when it comes right down to it, the priest doesn t direct the liturgy either. He can guide its flow. He presides over the chaotic humanity of the rite. But the one who is in charge, thank God, is, well, God. The liturgy is the work of people, yes, but people who have been incorporated into the cosmic worship of the Father by Christ. Or itʹs a ʺpublic work,ʺ done on behalf of hoi polloi, by the church. It is Christ alone who knows the Father as an equal and can love in return with the same divine love that the Father is. Through Christ, united to him and to one another solely by the grace of the Holy Spirit, we are, amazingly, privileged to join in the eternal liturgy which Isaiah and John the Divine fell over their words trying to describe from their visions. When is the liturgy successful? When we listen to the command to Go to love and serve the Lord, and we do that by serving each other in our lives and in our community, especially those unable to really help themselves. God directs that journey to the reign of God, peacefully, patiently, with all the freedom that love demands. I want to, try to, enable that kind of response to the gospel. Or at least stay out of the way. I ll leave you with these words from Annie Dillard s Teaching a Stone to Talk, which say so poetically what needs to be said about liturgy: On the whole, I do not find Christians, outside of the catacombs, sufficiently sensible of conditions. Does anyone have the foggiest idea what sort of power we so blithely invoke? Or, as I suspect, does no one believe a word of it? The churches are children playing on the floor with their chemistry sets, mixing up a batch of TNT to kill a Sunday morning. It is madness to wear ladies straw hats and velvet hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers should issue life preservers and signal flares; they should lash us to our pews. For the sleeping god may wake someday and take offense, or the waking god may draw us out to where we can never return. (page 45). 2 Saint Anne Church May 6, 2018 stannebarrington.org

5 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SINGING THE FAITH: GOD IS LOVE You can only sit through so many weddings before you start listening again to the familiar scriptures, like 1 Corinthians 13. Once you start understanding that St. Paul is writing a letter to a church that has a real problem, writing to people whom he loves with a great passion for them and for the gospel, that he wants them to stop arguing about who is the best or the holiest or who s in charge, who ought to be leading and wants them to start seeing that it s quite possible to see signs of God s action in their church in the way they love each other, it s not just a pretty reading any more, not just words. It s a way out of hell. Same with St. John and his vocabulary that we hear both from the letters (1 John) and the gospel during the Easter season. John seems to talk about love all the time so that it s hard to keep listening. You and I talk about loving our spouses, our friends, our kids, our dog, golf, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, tacos, Pope Francis, Saint Anne, the Cubs, the White Sox, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emma Stone, Francesca s, Lou Malnati s and Notre Dame, Texas and Mozart. We have two speeds: love and hate. Maybe three, if we include ignore.ʺ G. K. Chesterton wrote a little book about a hundred years ago called The Four Loves in which he tries to reintroduce the nuances of the various kinds of love that the Greeks described with different words: eros, storge, philia and agape. You could include mania too: mania is desire gone askew, so that craving becomes a kind of disease, but he s mostly interested in healthier kinds of love. Separating these four loves is a little risky because there are times when some of them are used interchangeably, even in scripture. But for our purposes, eros pertains to different kinds of physical love, storge pertains to affection. The two most often used in the New Testament are philia, which is friendship, particularly close friendship, even within a family, and agape, which is most often used to mean the kind of love God has for us, that is, selfemptying love, love that asks nothing in return, always freely given, no strings attached. When John says, God is love, he uses agape. When St. Paul talks about love is patient; love is kind, and so on in 1 Corinthians 13, he uses agape. You can begin to see that, where Christian love is concerned, whether it s God s love for us, ours for God or ours for each other, it s agape that is meant. I tell a story about Heart of a Shepherd that is related to John 21: that my song is based on. It s too long to tell here, but the short version would be that in that passage, when Jesus is asking Peter Do you love me? and Peter answers him, You know I love you, Jesus is asking Peter Do you agape me? and Peter answers I philia you. That happens twice. Third time, Jesus asks, Do you philia me? Think about that. Since the English translation uses love every time, it s (at least) possible that some of the nuance of meaning is lost. When I sat down to write God Is Love, what I wanted to do was pull all of that together so that we d begin to celebrate that the love that Paul is talking about in the first letter to the Corinthians and the love that John is talking about it in 1 John and the gospel are one and the same. God s love is patient, kind, doesn t put on airs, never wishes the other harm, doesn t brood over injury and that s how our love should be as well. Paul says that we can do all kinds of good deeds, but without love, that is, the desire to give ourselves for the other, the desire for the good of the other before our own, it means nothing. And Paul understands that God already loves like that. There is only one love, and it is the very life of God, shared with utter generosity, poured out on the whole world. So the chorus of my song uses the words of St. John, God is love, and those who live in love, live in God and God in them. The verses sing the words of St. Paul. In the third verse, it comes together as the choir sings God is love, and the cantor sings, Love is ever patient, and the word Love overlaps, so that we begin to hear God/Love is ever patient, God/Love is always kind and so on. Give it a listen when you have time on our CD from last summer, To You Who Bow. It s on YouTube too: Saint Anne Church May 6, 2018 stannebarrington.org 5

10 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS Week of the Young Child 2018 at Saint Anne Next Generation Parish Preschool Mrs. Nancy Meehan Early Childhood Director The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the worldʹs largest early childhood education association, with nearly 80,000 members and a network of over 300 local, state and regional affiliates. This year, the WOYC was celebrated Monday, April 16th-Friday, April 20th. The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for childrenʹs success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child is a time to plan how we as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation will better meet the needs of all young children and their families. Saint Anne Preschool celebrates WOYC in an effort to honor the children and families that we serve here at Saint Anne Parish School. It is our privilege to watch former students grow up at Saint Anne and to watch the seeds that we have planted in the little ones grow and develop as the children turn into young adults. This year, some of the special activities we planned for the week included a field trip for our Pre-K classes and their fourth grade buddies to Metropolis Centre for the Performing Arts, a musical performance for preschool and kindergarten by Jodie Koplin s Jigglejams at school, a library visit provided by the Barrington Area library, a special program in the gym with our own talented P.E. instructor Ms. Jill Johnson, a walking field trip to the Nirvana Yoga Studio in downtown Barrington and, of course, our Annual Preschool Art Show! Finally, we celebrated Tech Day in preschool using ipads, Osmo kits, hexbugs and coding robots in our preschool classrooms. The Art Show is a huge and joyful exhibit of the work our little Cardinals do daily in our classrooms to reinforce our philosophy of process art. We hope to instill a love for the doing of art rather than worrying about the outcome. We hope to teach our students to use their own ideas to create, develop their confidence and celebrate God s gift of imagination. We would like to thank the Barrington Police Department for helping us cross the street safely on our way to yoga class. Sound like fun? Do you have or know a preschool child looking for an excellent preschool program? Please send them our way. Personalized tours are always available, and we are happy to tell you all about our unique preparatory preschool experience. Call the School Office at to schedule a tour today! 10 Saint Anne Church May 6, 2018 stannebarrington.org

16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2018 (56B) First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 10:25-26, 34-35, Responsorial Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4. RX = The Lord has revealed tot the nations his saving power. Second Reading: 1 John 4:7-10 Gospel: John 15:9-17 (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite below the text of the Lectionary or the Bible. Last Sunday, we took up the metaphor of the vine and the branches, so we could understand that being alive in The Christ depends on our being joined securely in abiding intimacy with this Holy One; this describes completely the relationship of The Christ with the members of the group. Without this intimacy, we cannot be effective disciples; I am the vine, you are the branches without me, you can do nothing (v.5). Recall that in calling people to follow him as disciples (John 1:35 ff.), Jesus was asking them to leave their extended family group and to instead attach themselves to him and form a new group. This was counter to their instinct, and their cultural behavior was very risky as it meant stepping away from the security and protection of the extended family. This week, we add other cultural imagery that made this text so vivid to John s readers. Note again, that this translation into English uses the word remain (v.9, As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love) instead of abide which more clearly carries the connotation of mutual indwelling. The gospel according to John as well as those three short letters attributed to John is replete with the word love. In today s gospel pericope 1, Jesus underscores its importance by using love 9 times in 9 verses. Was that word known in the same sense we often use it today? In the Judean (Jewish) mindset, love is less about affection or emotional love and more about a sense of attachment and solidarity among the members of a group. Recall that individualism in that society is non-existent and that the very life of a person was derived from identification with a group. Outside of the group, whether extended family or clan, village or nation, there was no chance of survival; group-centeredness was everything. Joshua, for example, admonished Israel to love their God and to hold fast to this special God 2. With that cultural context in mind, we read very differently the oft-quoted text, a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and they become one flesh 3.. Recall that in Mediterranean society, a son after marriage remained in his father s household, thereby extending and honoring the family. Therefore, to leave one s father and mother meant to detach from them so that one could attach oneself to one s wife; culturally, this is highly improbable. The Jerusalem Bible translation quoted above substitutes the word attaches for the more familiar cleave or cling. The primary attachment is still to one s father and brothers and their household, and not to the wife, who, although ideally is most likely a blood relation, is nevertheless outside the primary group. The word love found throughout John s writings should be thought of in terms of attachment in the sense described above. For example, the oft quoted 3:16 God so loved the world that he gave his only son can be seen from another perspective. God also very much loved (was attached to) the Son (see 17:24). And the Son, time and again, invites us to be attached to him: Chapter 14, verses 15, 21, 23 and 24 and chapter 21: Jesus, therefore, continues to reinforce that the disciples should attach themselves to him over and against all that their culture had ingrained in them. 16 Saint Anne Church May 6, 2018 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story It is not enough, however, to simply belong to the group. In their order of values, just being (rather than doing) is the preferred option. As a consequence, Mediterranean people usually respond to a given stimulus in a very spontaneous fashion. To calculate or think through an activity enough to plan the doing of it is a secondary option. However, in today s gospel passage, John shows Jesus again exhorting the disciples to do, because for males, the primary value is in being, and only after that is there any value in doing. (For females, it is the reverse 4.) Therefore, in today s pericope, Jesus is once more turning upside down the usual cultural order: being, that is, attachment to him and to his Father is not enough. They must do something; they must do what Jesus commands them: they must love in a very full active sense; it s unmistakable, he says: love one another as I love you. in the very next breath, Jesus explains how to love as he loves: No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. How to love as Jesus does? Verse 16 is a clue; the rest of Easter season, culminating at Pentecost, is a clue; each Mass we celebrate with one another and hear at the Dismissal, Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life; that s a clue. John shows Jesus following a pattern our own culture recognizes well. Throughout Hebrew scripture, the prophets played exactly this same role. The chosen people believed being elected, or being chosen, was enough since this obviously conferred status, or honor. Thus, the prophets, time and again, challenged them to move from being to doing, that is, from being the Chosen to doing what the Chosen should do; the prophets exhorted them to keep the covenant do the commandments do the deeds of justice and charity. Note vv in the first reading: While Peter was still speaking these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. In other words, yes, listen to the word, yes, receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, but then, glorify God. All the foregoing enhances our appreciation of the context in which the first readers understood this passage. But our American society is action-oriented; deep in our bones is that for which we are much admired: we are a people who take-charge-and-get-the -job-done. So what? How do we reconcile our own cultural stance with v.16a? It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you or with today s psalm refrain? The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. How do we manage our tendency to forget the idea of being chosen? Or our tendency to forget God s action in our lives? 1 Pericope: a biblical passage integrated among the four selected for the Lectionary (the set of readings for a given day of the liturgical year). A biblical passage might be modified by the omission of verses (see the discontinuity above in Acts) or by the addition of words, e.g. Jesus said to his disciples: are added before v.9 in the gospel pericope. 2 Joshua 22:5 3 Genesis 2:24: The New Jerusalem Bible 4 For example, at Luke 10:38, Martha was doing, as was customary for females in the culture. When she complained that Mary was sitting at his feet just listening, he told her that Mary [had] chosen to do the better part thereby inviting Martha to stop fretting and to be like Mary to be engaged in being instead of only doing. 5 The beginning of Chapter 10 is very short; perhaps read it for context. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
