2 PROVIDENCE AND THE CONSPIRACY OF ACCIDENTS By Ron Rolheiser, OMI Some years ago, in a class in religious experience, a woman shared this story: She had been raised in a religious home and had been a regular church-goer until her university years when her interest in religion progressively dropped so that by the time of her graduation, she no longer attended church. Her indifference to religion continued for several more years after her graduation. Her story focused on how that changed. One day, several years after having given up going to church, she went to spend some time with a married sister who lived near a major ski resort. She arrived on a Saturday evening and the next morning, Sunday, her sister invited her to go to church with her. She went skiing instead. On one of her runs down the hill that Sunday, she hit a tree and broke her leg. Sporting a huge cast, she was released from hospital several days later. The next Sunday morning, her sister again asked her to come to church with her. This time, with skiing not an option, she accepted the invitation. As luck would have it, the readings for the day were about the Good Shepherd and, as chance would have it, there was a visiting-priest from Israel. The priest could not see her, complete with cast, sitting in the back pews and so there was no explanation, other than divine providence or pure, sinister fluke, for how he began his homily: Thereʹs a practice among shepherds in Israel, he said, that existed at the time of Jesus and is still in use today that needs to be understood in order to appreciate what Jesus says about God as the Good Shepherd. Sometimes, very early on in the life of a lamb, if a shepherd senses that this particular lamb is going to be a congenital stray and forever be drifting away from the herd, he deliberately breaks its leg so that he has to carry it until its leg is healed. By that time, the lamb becomes so attached to the shepherd that it never strays again! I may be dense, shared the woman, but, given my broken leg and all that chance coincidence, hearing those words woke up something inside me. I have prayed and gone to church regularly ever since! The language of God is the experience God writes inside our lives, says John of the Cross. James Mackey suggests that divine providence is a conspiracy of accidents through which God speaks. What this woman experienced that Sunday was precisely the language of God, divine providence, Godʹs finger in her life through a conspiracy of accidents. Today such a concept of divine providence is not very popular. Our age tends to see this as too-connected to an unhealthy fatalism ( Itʹs all in Godʹs hands; I neednʹt take all the necessary measures! ), an unhealthy fundamentalism ( God sent AIDS into the world as a punishment for sexual promiscuity! ) or an unhealthy theology of God ( God sends us natural and personal disasters to bring us back to our senses! ) Itʹs good that our age rejects these false notions of providence because God does not start fires, floods, wars, AIDS or anything else to punish us. God doesnʹt break anyoneʹs legs. Nature, chance, freedom and brute contingency do. Sometimes, admittedly, sin is involved, but thatʹs not the point. God doesnʹt send catastrophes to wake us up. But to say that God doesnʹt initiate or cause these things is not the same thing as saying that God doesnʹt speak through them. God speaks through chance events, accidents, both good and bad. Past generations more easily grasped this. My parents, for example, had a finely-tuned and theologically-correct sense of divine province: They were farmers and, for them, like Abraham and Sarah of old, there were no accidents, only providence and the finger of God. If they had a good harvest, God was blessing them. If they had a poor one, well, they concluded that God wanted them to live on less for a while and for a good reason. And they would always in the end figure out that reason. Jesus called this reading the signs of the times. How do we do this? We do it by becoming meteorologists of soul who read the inner movements of the spirit in the outer weather of history. In the conspiracy of accidents that make up the ordinary events of our everyday lives, the finger of God is writing and writing large. We are children of Israel, children of Jesus, and children of our mothers and fathers in the faith. We need therefore, like them, to look at each and every event in our lives and ask ourselves the question: What is God saying to us in this? The language of God is the experience that God writes inside our lives. Reading that language is an important form of prayer, one that takes us beyond simply saying prayers to more healthily living out the words: Pray always. 2 Saint Anne Church April 22, 2018 stannebarrington.org

4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SINGING THE FAITH: THE GLORY TO GOD I ve sung a lot of different music to the text of the Glory to God in the Mass during my life. Growing up, from my childhood through high school days, my favorite among the chant Masses was called the Ambrosian Gloria, because it was of a different kind of chant than most of the music in the Liber Usualis in that it came from the music of Milan, where St. Ambrose had been bishop, rather than Rome or France. Contrary to legend, Ambrose himself didn t have anything to do with writing the music himself. The Ambrosian Gloria was unique in that about 90% of it was chanted on a single note, with occasional moves up or down by one tone. But at the end of certain phrases, including the name of Jesus, and ad dexteram Patris ( at the right hand of the Father, ) the melody would blossom out into this soaring twelve-note syllable that turned the music from something rather humdrum to something really expansive and wonderful. There were Masses in English in the early years after Vatican II, like the People s Mass by Jan Vermulst that were widely popular, as were settings like the Missa Bossa Nova by the late Chicagoan Peter Scholtes, who as a priest had ministered at St. Brendan s on the south side. When the St. Louis Jesuits became popular in the late 1970s and going forward, a setting of the Gloria, by John Foley, S.J., became virtually omnipresent. It was in verse-refrain form, an innovation since the Vatican Council, which made the first verse, Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth, into a refrain and gave the verses to the choir. By the time this Gloria ran its course, congregations were singing the verses as well as the refrain. I wrote a Gloria in 7/8 time in the mid-1980s at my previous parish, which, as far as I know, was the only one of its kind! Probably because it was so sui generis and idiosyncratic, it had limited appeal, but it was published on our second album in 1985, Do Not Fear to Hope. When Gary Daigle introduced his setting of the Gloria at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale and then on his recording Praise the Maker s Love in 1991, I started using it everywhere. We used it here at Saint Anne until the translation changed in Today at Mass, and pretty much since the translation changed, our Easter season setting here has been from Ed Bolduc s Mass of St. Ann, written for his parish in Marietta, Georgia. Ed s liturgical music, you can probably tell from the setting, is oriented toward especially teen congregations, but like me, he works in a big parish with people of all ages and tries to write in a way that has appeal across the board. I think this setting is about the best one out there and most well known of the newer settings. I always keep my ear to the ground for what s working in other parishes, and when something seems to take off well in different parts of the country, you are liable to hear us try it here at Saint Anne. Meanwhile, Ed Bolduc s Glory to God setting is so familiar now that we introduced the Eucharistic acclamations (Holy, Holy, Mystery of Faith and Great Amen) on Easter, hoping that the thematic similarity would help the music be easier to pick up faster. Look for the music in your worship aid throughout the Easter season I know you know the words! 4 Saint Anne Church April 22, 2018 stannebarrington.org

8 Faith Formation and Education FIRST EUCHARIST RETREAT In preparation for First Eucharist, our children and their parents participated in a day of retreat this past weekend. Parents and children worked together to design and create the traditional banners that will hang on each family s pew. Plain pieces of felt were transformed into beautiful, personal statements reflecting the relationship of the child to the sacrament. 8 Saint Anne Church April 22, 2018 stannebarrington.org

9 Faith Formation and Education FIRST EUCHARIST RETREAT The children were given an opportunity to practice reception of the host and wine. Predictably, these new tastes weren t always a favorite! Families participated in a scavenger hunt for items used during liturgy. They learned the names and purpose of various items worn by the priests and used during the Mass. All shared in story of the Last Supper, learning the meaning and intentions of this wonderful gift that Jesus gave us. Families shared in hospitality, and all enjoyed a wonderful day! We were blessed to have Alex Bradley, Bella Fier and Edward Kurowski assisting with the retreats; two days which would not have run nearly as smoothly without them! 10 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS A GROWTH MINDSET AT SAINT ANNE SCHOOL Some children seem to take advantage of every learning opportunity, while some children struggle to find the importance of improving their knowledge or skills. The answer to this contrast may lie in a person s view of the world. Stanford Psychology Professor Dr. Carol Dweck has conducted decades of research on achievement and success a simple idea that makes all the difference in the classroom. According to Dr. Dweck, a person s viewpoint can fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. A mindset describes a person s belief about learning and intelligence. A person with a fixed mindset believes his intelligence and abilities are fixed traits. A fixed mindset can lead to the belief that talent alone creates success regardless of effort. A child who views intelligence as fixed tends to focus on jud gm ent. They are more concerned with proving they are smart or hiding that they are not. Moreover, a fixed mindset can have long lasting effects on learning by leading to a child that tends to avoid situations in which they might fail or might have to work hard. Conversely, children who have a growth mindset do better in school because they have an empowering perspective on learning. They focus on improvement and see effort as a way to build their abilities and failure as a natural part of the learning process. Teachers at Saint Anne School foster an environment in which students are not only aware of growth mindset but can actively take part in creating such a culture. To create this culture, teachers focus on praising the way a student approaches a challenge, not how hard they try or how well they did. For instance, a growth mindset-focused teacher would praise a student for the way she solved a math problem or how she organized her homework to get it done. In addition, the teachers use many strategies and skills to teach different learning styles and promote growth. Lastly, the ELA curriculum has students reading and writing about characters who face challenges and develop strategies to overcome them. In conclusion, children with growth mindsets believe their abilities can improve over time. By comparison, children with fixed mindsets think their abilities are a set trait that can t change. SAS teachers are fostering growth mindsets focused classrooms to help each child develop a love for learning, resiliency and self-confidence. 13 Community Life Sr. Lauretta Leipzig, the Club s Spiritual Moderator for the last 30 years, offered the following inspirational reflection. With the inspiration of God, the Divine Artist, the Women s Club has, over the past 70 years, painted a beautiful picture of women who prayed, gathered and partied together, and who gave generously countless hours of hospitality and service wherever and whenever it was needed. Tonight is special because it became a holy center around which we gathered to celebrate the 70th anniversary with members and friends a gift we can lovingly call life-filled. While, with joyful hearts we voice our thanks for all the graces, opportunities and women of the past and present, we cannot help but smile upon and thank especially the present Women s Club Board and all who designed this special night of celebration. We will continue to rely on the promises each day holds for the future of the Women s Club. They are gifts from God as we approach with insight the unknown ahead and we explore new ways to use our energy and talents. The Women s Club will, with renewed dedication, go forward with a strong hope and trust in God and Mary, our Patron and their constant presence and guidance with us. As we prepare to leave this beautiful place tonight, may we fill the pockets of our hearts with the memory of this precious experience. May we find joy and hope in the friendships we have made or renewed tonight and may all of us who celebrated call forth from one another and all the women of the Saint Anne Community the goodness and love that is hidden in every heart. Congratulations and thank you, Saint Anne Women s Club! 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2018 (50B) First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 4:8-12 Responsorial Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, 28, 29. RX = The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-2 Gospel: John 10:11-18 (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite below the text of the Lectionary or the Bible. A portion of chapter 10 of the gospel written by John is heard over the course of three years: On the 4th Sunday of Easter of last year, we looked at verses This year, year B, we focus on vv , and in Year C, the final year of the liturgical cycle 1, we have a short pericope consisting of verses In all three, we look at the intimacy between Jesus and all the disciples through the metaphor of shepherd and sheep. We learn that a noble shepherd carefully protects his sheep from intruders and impostors by going to any length, even to dying for his sheep. Eventually, we understand that this intimacy is based on the very bond that Jesus has with the Father (vv.14-15); please read the very short chapter 15 where we find John s beautiful description of that intimacy of Father, Son and disciples as one. With our cultural lens, we do not readily grasp the confusion in either the Jesus community or the later John community described in verse 6 (last year s pericope): Although Jesus used this figure of speech 2, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them; Jesus is saying that some do not realize the full import of his words. One area of confusion for us is their cultural one in which the core values of honor/shame are in play. We cannot appreciate that the term honorable shepherd seems an oxymoron to them: they see shepherds as ritually unclean because they are continuously engaged with blood in birthing and in touching their dead sheep. They lack honor because they expose their women to shame by leaving them unattended and unprotected, over extended periods. John however, graphically describes the noble shepherd in the earlier verses and culminates in the present pericope by stating that Jesus is the Good Shepherd because he cares for the sheep so much that he is willingly to lay down his life for them. In contrast to others who claim to be shepherds of God s people, only Jesus is the good shepherd; no other is good. The Judean (Jewish) ear hears references to the Hebrew scripture: in the short chapter 34 of Ezekiel, the shepherds of Israel (the leadership) are condemned for abandoning their responsibility to care for the sheep. Instead, they take care of themselves like the hired hands in John (vv ). Instead of feeding and caring, they slaughter and eat them 3 just like the thief at John 10:10; as a consequence, the maltreated and abandoned flock scatters and becomes food for wild animals. (Compare Ezekiel 34:5 with John 10:12!) God s response: God himself will remove those shepherds and God himself will look after and tend the sheep (Ezek 34:11-16). God will search out the lost and gather them into one flock so they can again enjoy good pasture. Moreover, God will appoint over them one who will pasture them, his faithful servant, David. The prophecy ends with God s words at v.30: they shall know that I, the Lord, am their God, and they are my people, the house of Israel, says the Lord God. You, my sheep, are the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God This is what the Judean ear hears John saying about Jesus. Jesus has come to tend the sheep that the present shepherds have neglected; he will gather the lost and scattered and there will be one flock, one shepherd (John 10:16). He will protect them from thieves, other shepherds and wolves (metaphorical for false 16 Saint Anne Church April 22, 2018 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story teachers ). The sheep will follow only Jesus for I know mine and mine know me (v.14). Again, the good shepherd: unlike the hired hand who is not invested in the sheep and therefore runs away when the wolf appears, Jesus will protect them even to the extent of willingly laying down his life; Jesus is insistent, the idea is dominant John repeats it four times in the span 8 verses! It is certainly countercultural; for a shepherd to lose his life accidentally is possible; for him to lay it down is improbable. Jesus not only lays it down of his own accord (v.18), but he also has the power to take it up again! (vv.17, 18). Not only is Jesus not an accidental victim but his resurrection is also part of the divine plan in which he, by his own will, has decided to cooperate. Eight short verses! Look at v.16: I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. Can this mean inclusion? Is this an alert to the Chosen and to the disciples in Jesus time, to those in John s time, and to us today that we are to pay attention, even do something about those who seem distinctly outside our horizons? This story of the good shepherd presents Jesus as both the way to 4, and the source of 5, abundant eternal life. Jesus announces that he alone has rightful charge over the sheep and that he will lay down his life to protect them from interlopers. As God s son, Jesus is God s patron among all humans. So what? It s spring! All sorts of buds are opening, green shoots are appearing, young birds are chirping hungrily in nests: new life! We breathe in the freshness of the new season, and we invite many to join us in a new life: we have First Communions, Confirmation; we have Baptisms, we have Marriages to what do we encourage these people? What or who is in the parish community and beyond, that will shepherd them in their journey? 1 A liturgical year extends through a calendar year from the First Sunday of Advent through the last Sunday of Ordinary Time when we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King 2 See 10:1-10; in ten short verses, John starts the imagery of sheep, shepherd, sheep gate and intimacy of shepherd and sheep. 3 (Ezekiel 34:3) 4 vv vv Works consulted: The Gospel According to John, I-X!!, Raymond E. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
