2 Grand Knights Report Dear Brother Knights and Families Here we are in September, school is back in session and the end of summer will soon be here. Three months into the new fraternal year and we are off to a great start in membership growth, fund raising, and funding our charitable obligations. The additional income generated from our fish fry s has allowed us to meet and in some cases exceed our budget. Thank you all for being a part of this great Council and for helping us achieve these results. Our council has been busy and VISIBLE, however, we can do more. On Knight Sunday weekend, September 16th and 17th, we'll conduct a membership drive to invite our fellow catholic gentlemen to join our order. It would be a great show to see the church pews filled with blue polos. I appeal to those that can, to come to one of the Masses and help us with this drive, and do wear your blue polos. In addition to the membership drive, we will also conduct a Wheelchair fund raising campaign. The Texas goal for this year is $300,000, to purchase 2,000 wheelchairs. I need everyone's help in making this a successful drive. In the past, our contributions have been limited to whatever amount was budgeted. I know we can do better and help with this great need. As I mentioned in the August newsletter, we continue to plan more family events. September 4th, come out and join us for our annual Labor Day Sock Up for food and fun and fellowship. It's FREE!. On September 17th beginning at 4:00 PM, we'll join with our Parish ACTS Core Team for an open house with food, family movie and fellowship. We still have a significant number of First Degree members that need to attend a major Degree. I ask Sponsors to reach out to these brothers and invite them to one of the upcoming Major Degree Exemplifications. As you can see on the schedule of upcoming events, we are quickly approaching another busy period for our Council. Please consider helping out. Our Friday fish fry turnout continues to grow both in customers as well as brother Knights helping out. Look forward to seeing many more brothers come out for our next fry event. Thank you all. FREEDOM TO SERVE why don t we? Let us all serve by giving a little of our time and talents. If you are able, consider coming out and helping with our FISH FRYs and Breakfast. The work is hard but fun and rewarding. Together, we can make a difference within our Council and our Parish. The Special Event Team schedule is as follows: Sep 1 - Team 3, Hank Alves (Fish Fry) Sep 10 - Team 4, Jerry Weaver (Breakfast) Oct 6 - Team 1, Mark Kirstein (Fish Fry) Oct 8 - Team 2, Jim Lovering (Breakfast) Oct 8 & 9- Teams 3 & 4 Hank Alves and Jerry Weaver (Senior Citizen Dinner) VIVAT JESUS Hank Alves, Grand Knight Service Awards Christopher A. 3 Deputy Grand Knight Habitat for Humanity Good Shepherd is working in partnership with other area churches to sponsor and build a Habitat for Humanity home as part of the Ecumenical Genesis Group. The build will start on September 8 and continue every Friday and Saturday until October 14. October 21 and 28 are Saturday work days only. Landscaping and dedication will be November 18, Since the area Knights of Columbus isn t sponsoring a home, I would encourage as many of us as possible to volunteer to work with the Good Shepherd group. In the past, many of Good Shepherd's volunteers have been knights. So to those who haven t thought about it before, I invite you to sign up and spend a few days helping build. Friends and family are welcome also. No prior experience is required. Sign up after mass on Aug 6 or just give me a call at More information is also available at Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian organization founded in 1976 that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness one family at a time. The organization assists in providing quality-built, affordable homes to needy families by cooperatively involving the future homeowner with community volunteers and suppliers to build the home. The families are specifically selected by Habitat for Humanity to assure their best chance of success; good credit history, stable income, etc. In addition to a down payment, recipients work alongside the construction crew and volunteers, and are then provided an affordable mortgage plan. The Knights of Columbus enthusiastically supports the mission of Habitat for Humanity, which not only helps people to become homeowners, but actively involves them in the houses preparation. This teaches valuable skills, develops confidence and provides experience. I look forward to working with you, Greg Ellison; Ladies Auxiliary The Ladies Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, September 5, at Mikulski Hall. All who wish to participate in the Rosary can meet at 6:00pm. Our meeting will start at 6:30pm. Refreshments will be served. Following is an outline of upcoming events the Ladies Auxiliary will be assisting the Knights with: - Friday, September 1, Fish Fry Bakery - baked items and volunteers needed - Monday, September 4, Labor Day Sock Hop - 4pm-8pm - Setup early Monday. We have many events this Fall which we will be reviewing at our September 5th meeting. We welcome all ladies associated with our Brother Knights (wives, daughters (18 and older), mothers, sisters, sisters-in-law etc.) The Ladies Auxiliary was created to support and serve with our men who are Knights of Columbus members. For information about the Ladies Auxiliary, please contact: Patsy Foxworth Ladies Auxiliary President; patsy.foxworth@sbcglobal.net Lectors Corner BE STILL Well, here we are in September and kids are back to school. The hustle and bustle begins and it's time to take them to their activities. It seems that we are just going a hundred miles a minute. After school band practice, football, cheerleading, volleyball, etc.etc And if we don t have children to drive around, we sometimes tend to overload our social calendar. It s no wonder we tend to get overwhelmed by all that is going on. So when is our prayer life? How much time do we put in to our prayer? So we ask, "God, where are you? I can t hear you." Our anxieties tend to really get the best of us. So maybe it s time to slow down, take time to rest, do nothing and empty your mind. Try to find that inner peace when you talk to GOD. BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD Psalm 46 But wait, first let me check my , Facebook, or Twitter account. It seems that we are also overloaded with social media as well. So what does it mean to be still? The dictionary tells us that stillness refers to being motionless, stationary, undisturbed, tranquil, silent, and calm. As a noun, stillness means the absence of motion. How can you begin to achieve stillness in your daily life? Begin by including twenty to thirty minutes every morning of centering prayer or lectio divina into your daily routine. This is where we need to start. Perhaps maybe even one decade of the rosary to get you going. Prayer is a discipline and the discipline of prayer will begin to bring stillness into your life. Wake up earlier so that you can be immersed in total silence and be still. Turn off the cell phone, , and Facebook. Do this every day and allow Him to do His good work! BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD Psalm 46 AMEN
4 DIVINE MERCY MOMEMENT Last month we talked about the importance of the Three O clock Hour and how our Lord wants us to immerse ourselves completely in His Mercy. Jesus continues in St. Faustina s Diary entry 1572, try your best to make the Stations of the Cross in this hour, provided that your duties permit it; and if you are not able to make the Stations of the Cross, then at least step into the chapel for a moment and adore, in the Blessed Sacrament, My Heart, which is full of mercy; and should you be unable to step into the chapel, immerse yourself in prayer there where you happen to be, if only for a very brief instant. I claim veneration for My Mercy from every creature Let us try to remember our Lord s passion at 3 O clock and immerse ourselves in prayer and thanksgiving for His great Mercy our salvation! A valuable Tip: We may set our cell phone s alarm for 3p.m. every day to remind us of the 3 O clock prayer for our Savior and Redeemer Membership Activities Knights Sunday Breakfast The Knights of Columbus will have a Sunday Breakfast at Mikulski Hall on September 10, 2017 from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. The meal includes: Biscuits and Gravy, Scrambled Eggs, Pancakes, Sausage or Bacon, Coffee, and Orange Juice. The cost is $6.00 Adults and $4.00 for children 12 and under. Children under 5 are free. KNIGHTS SUNDAY Knights Sunday Mass is scheduled for Good Shepard Church on September 17, 2017 at 8:00 AM. Knights Sunday, supported by our Council, is scheduled for Immaculate Conception Church on September 24, 2017 after the 9:45AM Mass. Please support this event to recruit new members. Knights Choir The Knights Choir will sing on September 17, 2017 at Good Shepherd Church at the 8AM Mass. Rehearsal is at 7:15AM. We are looking forward for more Knights to join us. Interested, please contact Larry Gladu, PGK Tom Stamp Membership Director ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE MEETING at Council Hall on Monday, September at 7:30PM. Members Activities Highway Cleanup This month we will be having a road cleanup on September 9, Breakfast is served at 7:30 AM with the group leaving the hall for cleanup at 8:00 Am. I am still looking for a volunteer to take over the road Cleanup Chairmanship. It is a quarterly task cleaning up about 1.5 miles of FM 3009 from IH35 and going south. See or call Tony Paulson if interested. Phone nantony6@hotmail.com Knights of Columbus Council Coats For Kids Drive We are collecting cleaned, slightly used, light-weight only coats, zipper jackets or sweaters for children and teens from Kindergarten through High School for distribution in September in the local schools. Even coats for parents of these children are welcomed. Please help!!! You may place the coats in the large containers in the entrance of the churches listed below or in Stylin' Hair Salon at 750 Schneider Rd. Cibolo just off of Hwy 78 onto FM 1103, or bring them to Mikulski Hall on Schertz Pkwy where the Knights meet. Please no missing buttons, broken zippers or torn coats. If you wish to help purchase new coats or jackets, please consider giving a check to the Knights of Columbus, Council 6358 ("Coats for Kids" in Memo part of your check). We have an inexpensive source for jackets at wholesale cost. Give your checks to any Knight at Mikulski Hall or to the Hall Mgr. or to Kaya Smith (my collection agent) at Stylin' Hair Salon and Spa in Cibolo, or place it into an envelope with "Coats for Kids" written on it and drop it into the church collection at Mass. Any amount, small or large, is welcomed. This is about helping needy families in our local SCUC school district. Thanks for your help, Ed Adam!! The coats drive will begin on Saturday, August 5th and end on Sunday, September 3rd. Any questions? So please consider volunteering for this event. Only Having Insurance Through Work Doesn t Work Do you know anyone whose life or career has drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could change employers, or even lose your job. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having through work insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you ll know exactly where you stand.
