1 A Message from our Grand Knight: Brother Knights, St. Valentine s Day is not just a day for romance it s a day to remember Saint Valentine. Valentine was a Roman Priest at a time when the church was being persecuted, he also had an edict that prohibited him from performing the marriage of young people. He had encouraged the idea of having solders marry before going off to battle so that they would fight better out of fear of what might happen to their wives or families if they died. So he secretly married them but was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. St. Valentine has come to be known as the patron saint of lovers. Before you enter into a Christian marriage you will want or even need some sense of God in your life. If Valentine were here today, he would say to married couples that there comes a time where you're going to have to suffer. It's not going to be easy to maintain your commitment and your vows in marriage. Don't be surprised if the gushing love that you have for someone changes to something less "gushing" but maybe much more mature. So we as Knights of Columbus can help to promote St. Valentines idea of love by honoring our wives which starts with making her feel as special as she is. We can also tell our daughters that human love and sexuality is wonderful because it is blessed by God through His graces. When we try to make a difference in the world, change always begins at home so we remember that as Knights of Columbus are called to be, In Service to One, In Service to All. 2 A Message from our Chaplain: Dear Brother Knights, This coming February 11th will be the Twenty-fifth World Day of the Sick. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has already sent out his message for this important celebration in the Church. Here is the beginning of that message: Dear Brothers and Sisters: On 11 February next, the Twenty-fifth World Day of the Sick will be celebrated throughout the Church and in a special way at Lourdes. The theme of this year s celebration is Amazement at what God has accomplished: The Almighty has done great things for me. (Lk 1:49). Instituted by my predecessor Saint John Paul II in 1992, and first celebrated at Lourdes on 11 February 1993, this Day is an opportunity to reflect in particular on the needs of the sick and, more generally, of all those who suffer. It is also an occasion for those who generously assist the sick, beginning with family members, health workers and volunteers, to give thanks for their God-given vocation of accompanying our infirm brothers and sisters. This celebration likewise gives the Church renewed spiritual energy for carrying out ever more fully that fundamental part of her mission which includes serving the poor, the infirm, the suffering, the outcast and the marginalized. The Pope s message should be well-received by us all. It is very clear that we Knights have a special place in our hearts for those who are ill and suffering. Every meeting ends with prayers for brother Knights who are in need, and the daily K of C Prayer Request s prove we are serious about praying for each other. God reward us all for the care and concern we show one another in our beautiful, fraternal order. Let us make a great attempt to observe well the Twenty-fifth World Day of the Sick along with the rest of our Holy Catholic Church. Msgr. Nemec Newest Fitzgerald Council Members!!! 3 Knight of Columbus Free Throw Contest 2017 Congratulations to all who participated in and won individual awards at the annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest this year at St. Teresa s. A special thanks to Tom Hoffman from our council who organizes and heads this special event. More thanks goes to all the Knights who were able to help out at this event as well. 3

4 Star Council Award Our council celebrated our STAR COUNCIL AWARD for the fourth year in a row! Our council was one of 24 that received this award out of 175+ councils in Nebraska. Accepting the award for is Grand Knight Tony Schafers from the KOC Nebraska District Deputy Bryan Welty. Fitzgerald Council Lenten Fish Fry's - Starting Friday March 3rd!!! 4
