2 Grand Knights Report Dear Brother Knights and Families As I mentioned in last month s newsletter we find ourselves in one of two very busy times of the year. First, I would like to thank all that showed up to help with our first monthly breakfast fund raiser. It was great to see lots of brothers come out to help even though they were not part of the assigned team- Thank you all. As you all know our next big event is the Senior Citizen s Dinner scheduled for Columbus Day, October 10 th. If you have not had the chance to participate in this event in the past, please consider coming out this year. The Senior Citizen Dinner is truly one of our biggest and most rewarding yearly events. The fall membership drive is scheduled for the weekend of October 22 nd and 23 rd. It would be great to have the pews filled with blue shirts at all Good Shepherd and Immaculate Conception Masses. We are the very best form of advertising for our order, so why not show our strength by our presence. The more visible we are the better chance we have to continue to grow our council and the Order. We have a significant number of First Degree members that need to attend a Major Degree. I need your help in reaching out to these brothers and invite them to attend one of the upcoming Major Degree Exemplifications so they can become Full Knights in our Order. The following is a list of upcoming events and the assigned Special Event Team: Oct 10, Senior Citizen Dinner - Special Events Team (4 & 1) Oct 16, Breakfast Fund Raiser - Special Events Team (2) Oct 22/23, Council Membership Drive - (ALL) Nov 20, Breakfast Fundraiser - Special Events Team (3) Dec 4, Good Shepherd Christmas Party - Special Events Team (4) Dec 11, Council Christmas Party - Special Events Team (1) Dec 18, Breakfast Fundraiser - Special Events Team (2) Dec 21, Chapter Christmas Party - Special Events Team (3) Our State Deputy s motto is FREEDOM TO SERVE. 3 Service Awards There was no one eligible for the years of service award for the month of September. Deputy Grand Knight Report Dear Brother Knights, I would like to thank everyone who came out to help at the soccer challenge! It would not have been a success without everyone that came out to show their support. Good Shepherd Knights of Columbus Council #6358 in Schertz, TX hosted the KofC Soccer Challenge on 24 September for kids ages The council had a total of 20 participants, many of which had impressive soccer skills! Ten Brother Knights volunteered a total of 40hrs to make this event a success. Winners of this year's soccer challenge were: 9 year-old-girls, Aundrea Allen; 9-year-old boys, Brodie Berger; 10-year-old girls, Kayla Warren; 10-year-old boys, Connor Hawkins; 11-year-old girls, Jelena Wells; 11-year-old boys, Zachary Thigpen; 13-year-old boys, Jacob Sanchez; 14-year-old boys, Shawn Tillman-Coriano. The best part about the few hours we spent out on the soccer field was the intangibles. A young boy came to the event very shy and didn t want to talk or interact much with his peers or Brother Knights on the field. Two older boys at the competition started talking to him and begin instructing him on the penalty kick. The young boy started kicking and you could tell his confidence was growing. Then a father came over and began instructing the young boy and continued to give him constructive criticism and complements on his skills. By the end of this impromptu coaching session the young boy was glowing and walked away with confidence in his abilities as a soccer player. This one moment made the whole event worth holding for the local community and makes me proud to be a Brother Knight! Vivat Jesus, Martin McCloud, Deputy Grand Knight / Youth Activities Director Ladies Auxiliary Our October meeting on Tue., Oct 4 th will begin with the Rosary at 6:00 P.M. Applications may be picked up at the hall or for those wishing more information, call As a reminder, if you haven t paid your annual membership for this year, please place your cash or check in an envelope marked for dues with your name included. This will help our Treasurer and Financial Secretary to keep accurate control over who has paid and for what purpose. Happy Birthday and sincere wishes for a blessed year to our October babies - Carol Bailey (4), Leslie Trehan (5), Cathy Moore (10), Pat Brangan (20), and Karen Fey (24). Pat Mantor, President Lectors Corner Faith Faith Merriam-Webster 1:belief and trust in and loyalty to God 2:complete trust Sound familiar if you remember last month we talked about trust. Faith is a gift of God, a supernatural virtue infused by him. Before this faith can be exercised, man must have the grace of God to move and assist him. Catechism 153 To live, grow, and preserve in the faith until the end we must nourish it with the word of GOD, we must beg the Lord to increase our faith: it must be working through charity abounding in hope, and rooted in the faith of the church. Catechism 162 The Credo I Believe (Apostles Creed) is the faith of the church professed personally by each believer, principally during Baptism. We Believe (Nicene Creed) is the faith of the church confessed by the bishops assembled in council or more generally by the liturgical assembly of believers. So the next time you recite the creed think about what you are saying, do you truly believe in faith? What does faith offer you? Eternal Life God Bless

4 Divine Mercy Moment in this The Year of Mercy What is the next thing we can see in the Image of Divine Mercy? Let us focus on His wounds in His hands and feet. These are wounds made by the nails used to sacrifice our Lord on the Cross. He is the crucified Jesus who died on the Cross - for our redemption and salvation. Jesus appeared to St. Faustina and directed her to paint an image of Him. (Diary 47) The dark background is the darkness of sin our Lord is emerging from by His death and resurrection. Membership Activities Knights Highway Cleanup These Brothers participated in the Highway cleanup on September 10 th. Thank you for contributing to this project to clean the highway. Deacon Roy Presentation of Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run Hosted by: Good Shepherd Knights of Columbus, Council 6358 Place: Good Shepherd Church Date: Wednesday October 26, 2016 Time: 6:00 PM Silver Rose presentation ALL ARE INVITED TO ATTEND

5 History: Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run Our Lady of Guadalupe has done so much for her people and country that an assembly of young men called the Columbian Squires associated with the Knights of Columbus wanted to give back to her. The group headed by Brother Miguel Martinez Estrada, Grand Knight Andreas Saucedo and Fray Margil De Jesus of Knights of Columbus Council #2312 in Monterrey, Mexico came up with the idea of running of a rose to Our Lady Guadalupe in Monterrey. The small group was so enthused that they wanted to invite other squires to participate from two other countries on the North American Continent. They called Squires from Laredo, Texas and London, Ontario, Canada. London squires asked to start the relay running of the Rose from there through the United States and finish8ing up in Mexico City. The first Rose was blessed by Bishop John C. Codyin London. Ii was then flown to New York where it was received by Grand Knight Joseph Thomasen, who in turn took it to Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Mr. Hart then took the Rose to Dallas, Texas and delivered it to District officers of the state of Texas. Brother Knight Jack Collerin received the Rose and sent it to Laredo, Texas where the Rose was received by squires from Monterrey, Mexico at the International Bridge in Laredo. The squires then ran the Rose from the International Bridge to Monterrey. The rose was run by several Squires through Sabinas Hidalgo N.L. Mexico to Cienega de Flores and on to the Basilica in Monterrey, Mexico on December 12, Today four Silver Roses travel through North America exemplifying Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady and commitment to the Culture o0f Life. One Rose begins its journey in Ontario moving through the central United States. A second Rose starts its route in Manitoba, moving westward to British Columbia and then down the Pacific coast through California before turning eastward to Arizona and New Mexico. The third Rose starts out in New York moving through the eastern United States and the Gulf coast. The fourth Rose will start in Virginia moving south along the Eastern Seaboard. The Roses converge at the International Bridge in Laredo, Texas where they are transferred to the Knights of Mexico who carry it to the basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico there the program ends with a service on Dec12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Attending this Presentation will count as credit towards your Silver Wings Award! Annual Senior Appreciation Luncheon: 10 October 2016 at Noon Please send me an 'reply' (see link below) or look for the 'Sign-Up' sheet (at the meeting) and be sure to lend a hand! See below for learning how helping can go toward earning the ACE Award. What the event is: The Good Shepherd Knights of Columbus Council 6358 will hold its Annual Senior Appreciation Luncheon at 'noon' on 10 October 2016 (Monday: at the Hall). Get-togethers are very important to seniors. That is why this luncheon usually has around 300 seniors attending! Seniors from the surrounding communities will enjoy a menu of BBQ chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad and chips (with iced tea and lemonade). The meals will be prepared, and served, by Good Shepherd Knights of Columbus (Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be helping to serve, as well). The Council's Ladies Auxiliary will provide their wonderful desserts. Bingo will be played after desserts are served. How you can help: If you are on the 'Duty TEAM' please do your best to be available. We will prepare the chickens, and side dishes, the 'previous' day (Sunday, 9 Oct 2016 at 2:00pm). We will need to start the 'cooking' on the day of the luncheon (Monday, 10 Oct 2016) by 6:00am. We will need help with final preparations and serving on Monday (servers should arrive by 11:00am-please feel free to come earlier). We will also need help with Bingo (it will be offered after everyone has been served their `dessert'). Finally, we will need help to 'clean up' afterwards. How the event can help you: Hey, we have all seen how working together, in the name of Jesus, helps us to give better service to others while strengthening our camaraderie. Also, this event is 'perfect' toward earning your 'ACE Award' (you need five qualifying events in order to earn the award: Consider teaming-up with your wife, and or child, to earn awards while becoming closer as a family.
