2 Grand Knights Report Dear Brother Knights and Families BROTHERS IN CHRIST From burying a friend in Lubbock to attending SK CARL SANDERS rosary at GOOD SHEPHERD, a good sense of my mortality was brought home. Think about a meaningful LENT. Speaking about our efforts at the LENTEN FISH FRIES, yes we have jobs to do in making this a very successful fund raising event. We did cut back to 4 teams because of paper Knights who would not show for their scheduled times last year. Each team should expect a couple of Fridays but the teams are beefy enough so that each lead could get a co-lead split the load. This means all teams need to MAN UP and take responsibility for their scheduled night. We will have a meeting on the 3rd of FEB FOR ALL TEAM LEADS and co leads on procedures for this coming season. I cannot stress attendance enough for this critical preview of needed knowledge. We will have another Membership drive in March; Star Council is achievable with your help and commitment. Also having another Pancake breakfast is a hot item which we need to address at the next meeting. Since we got real adept at making Muffulettas, would we be open to working Fiesta-Taste of New Orleans as late spring fund raiser? Will close with the prayer of ST Ignatius of Loyola" Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous.teach me to serve Thee as thou deservest ;to give and not count the cost; To fight and not heed the wounds; To toil and not to seek for reward, Save that of knowing that I do thy will, O God" We Walk by Faith and not by sight. Jim Lovering GK Service Awards The following members are eligible for the years of service award indicated. These awards will be presented at the regular meeting in the month of February. If you cannot be present for that meeting it will be your responsibility to contact the Grand Knight to make alternate arrangements. Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman saint widely celebrated on February 14 and commonly associated with "courtly love." Although not much of St. Valentine's life is reliably known, and whether or not the stories involve two different saints by the same name is also not officially decided, it is highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome. Catholic Online In 1969, the Roman Catholic Church removed St. Valentine from the General Roman Calendar, because so little is known about him. However, the church still recognizes him as a saint, listing him in the February 14 spot of Roman Martyrolgy. The legends attributed to the mysterious saint are as inconsistent as the actual identification of the man. According to the popular hagiographical identity, and what is believed to be the first representation of St. Valentine, the Nuremberg Chronicle, St. Valentine was a Roman priest martyred during Claudius' reign. However, other tales of St. Valentine's life claim he was executed either in the year 269, 270, 273 or 280. Other depictions of St. Valentine's arrests tell that he secretly married couples so husbands wouldn't have to go to war. Another variation of the legend of St. Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned he healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he left the girl a note signed, "Your Valentine." St. Valentine is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses and his feast day is celebrated on February 14. Regardless of which story you belief I feel that at least for the month of February we should all be more compassionate and loving to one another just as Jesus would want us to be. This world could sure use some Love Sweet Love. Council Address: GSKOC6358@sbcglobal.net Council 6358 website:
5 A DEVINE MERCY MOMENT IN THE YEAR OF MERCY In this issue of our KOC Newsletter we are having Part II of St. Faustina s prayer For the Grace to be Merciful to Others. If we read it, meditate on it and act on it, this can be our monthly participation in God s Mercy in this Year Mercy. We can still keep acting on last month s Part I of the prayer. [Part II] Help me that my ears may be merciful, so that I may give heed to my neighbors needs and not be indifferent to their pains and moanings. [Part I] Help me, O Lord that my eyes may be merciful, so that I may never suspect or judge from appearances, but look for what is beautiful in my neighbors souls and come to their rescue. Lenten Fish Fry The Lenten season will soon be here. A season for us to prepare for Easter by setting aside time to reflect on Jesus suffering, his sacrifice, his life, death and resurrection. Lent is also a time when we as a council raise a significant amount of money to fund our charitable needs. It is a time when we need all brothers that can help to come out and give us a hand. The work is rewarding, and fun. Please consider coming out and share a little of your time with your brothers. Who knows, you may even make new friends! Give it a try! Also, please remember that the bar teams could use help as well. Both special events and bar team rosters are posted on the bulletin board in the hall. If your name is not on one of the rosters and you would like to volunteer, pick a team and sign up. Please consider sharing a bit of your time with your brothers. You ll never hear us complain we have too much help. Fish Fry Training There will be Fish Fry training on Wednesday 3, 2016 at 7:30 PM at the Hall for key personnel: Leaders, ticket sellers, cooks etc. Anyone else who would be interested is welcome to attend.
