2 Grand Knights Report Dear Brother Knights and Families Lent season is here and the renewal of Easter will soon be upon us. As we begin our Lenten journey, let us reflect on how we and those arounds us can better live out the first principle of our order. CHARITY. Are we really committed to those in need? Do we think of others before ourselves? Well, we all have the opportunity to live up to our order s first principle this Lenten season. We can all do our part by helping make this year's Fish fry fund raising the best and most productive. I am asking those that can help to please come out and support your team and Council. 40 CANS FOR LENT, in addition to our fish frys, we will once again collect food to feed the hungry by asking my Brother Knights and the Parish Family to contribute to this worthy cause. Food collection will take place at the hall, and both Good Shepherd and ICC churches. Please note Council officer elections will take place during our May Business meeting. I have appointed our Worthy Advocate Rich Nielson as Nominating Committee Chair. Now is the time to start thinking of running for office, please keep in mind that only 3 rd degree Knights can run and hold officer positions. If thinking of running there is still time to become a 3 rd degree member by attending one of the upcoming Major Degree Exemplifications. Star Council recognition remains within sight and can be achieved with everyone s help and commitment. To help us get there, we will conduct a Membership drive at all Masses the weekend of March 26 th. We have a significant number of First Degree members that need to attend a major Degree. I need the sponsors to reach out to these brothers and invite them to attend one of the upcoming Major Degree Exemplifications. Our State Deputy s motto is FREEDOM TO SERVE. Let us all serve by giving a little of our time and talents especially in the upcoming lent season. If you are able, consider coming out and helping with our FISH FRYs and spend time with your Brother Knights. The work is hard but fun and rewarding. Together, we can make a difference within our Council and our Parish. These awards will be presented at the regular meeting in the month of February. If you cannot be present for that meeting it will be your responsibility to contact the Grand Knight to make alternate arrangements. Albert Mantor Jr Jose L Perales Jr 5 Years 5 Years Deputy Grand Knight Brother Knights, The Regional Free Throw Championship was held on February 11 th at Children s Home. 9 of the 10 winners from our council s free throw competed. The regional results for our council are: St. PJ s contest Girls: 9yr Crystal Lingo, 2 nd Place Boys: 10yr Evan Herrera, 3 rd Place 11yr Benjamin Trevino, 2 nd Place 14yr Ian Lingo, 1 st Place Ian Lingo made 22 of 25 free throws and placed 1 st in the 14yr boy category. He is now eligible to compete in the state competition on March 4 th at Barbra Bush Middle School here in San Antonio. The gym will open at 7am and the competition will begin at 10am. 4 Ladies Auxiliary Where did 2016 go! The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 1 st. According to the February Newsletter from the Knights, Team 2 (Jim Lovering s team) will have Fish Fry duty on this date. This means the following ladies will not be expected to work in the bakery for the evening: Cruz Guerra, Archie King, Rita Kirstein, Joann Lovering, Amanda Braden, Carol Schindler, and Lynn Young. Instead these ladies are asked to help their spouses/sponsor in the kitchen. Other Ladies Auxiliary members who are willing to help out in the bakery are requested to contact me by (pgm921@gmail.com) or by phone at ( ). Of course, all ladies are asked to please bring in baked goods for our sale.the slate of Ladies Auxiliary officers for the term will be presented at our March 7 th meeting Rosary at 6:00 PM and business meeting to follow at 6:30 PM. There are only three members celebrating birthdays in March: Cora Lunan on the 1 st, Patsy Foxworth on the 19 th and myself on the 21 st. Happy Birthday Cora and Patsy! Pat Mantor, President Lectors Corner MARCH MADNESS No, I am not talking about the NCAA Final Four. What I want to talk about is the Four Gospels. Who were these writers? While the entire Bible is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16), He used human authors with different backgrounds and personalities to accomplish His purposes through their writing. Each of the gospel authors had a distinct purpose behind his gospel and in carrying out those purposes, each emphasized different aspects of the person and ministry of Jesus Christ. Matthew was writing to a Hebrew audience, and one of his purposes was to show from Jesus' genealogy and fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies that He was the long-expected Messiah, and thus should be believed in. Matthew's emphasis is that Jesus is the promised King, the Son of David, who would forever sit upon the throne of Israel (Matthew 9:27; 21:9). Mark, a cousin of Barnabas (Colossians 4:10), was an eyewitness to the events in the life of Christ as well as being a friend of the apostle Peter. Mark wrote for a Gentile audience, as is brought out by his not including things important to Jewish readers (genealogies, Christ's controversies with Jewish leaders of His day, frequent references to the Old Testament, etc.). Mark emphasizes Christ as the suffering Servant, the One who came not to be served, but to serve and give His life a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Luke, the beloved physician (Colossians 4:14 KJV), evangelist, and companion of the apostle Paul, wrote both the gospel of Luke and the Acts of the apostles. Luke is the only Gentile author of the New Testament. As a historian, he states that it is his intent to write down an orderly account of the life of Christ based on the reports of those who were eyewitnesses (Luke 1:1-4). Luke often refers to Christ as the Son of Man, emphasizing His humanity, and he shares many details that are not found in the other gospel accounts. The gospel of John, written by John the apostle, is distinct from the other three Gospels and contains much theological content in regard to the person of Christ and the meaning of faith. The gospel of John begins not with Jesus' birth or earthly ministry but with the activity and characteristics of the Son of God before He became man (John 1:14). Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:30-31). Thus, in having four distinct and yet equally accurate accounts of Christ, different aspects of His person and ministry are revealed. Each account becomes like a different-colored thread in a tapestry woven together to form a more complete picture of this One who is beyond description. And while we will never fully understand everything about Jesus Christ (John 20:30), through the four Gospels we can know enough of Him to appreciate who He is and what He has done for us so that we may have life through faith in Him. AMEN

5 DIVINE MERCY MOMENT: What Can I Do for Lent? Can We Follow our Lord More Closely? Our Lord Jesus of Divine Mercy calls us in our sufferings to follow Him on His Passion as he says in St. Faustina s Diary, True, My child, all that is painful. But there is no way to heaven except the way of the cross. I followed it first. You must learn that it is the shortest and surest way. (Diary 1487). We can follow our Lord on His Passion as we contemplate and meditate on His Passion through the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. In the diary, our Lord expresses how important it is for us to contemplate and meditate on His Passion. As He says, There are few souls who contemplate My Passion with true feeling; I give great graces to souls who meditate devoutly on My Passion. (Diary 737), It is in My Passion that you must seek light and strength. (Diary 654), There is more merit to one hour of meditation on My sorrowful Passion than there is to a whole year of flagellation that draws blood (Diary 369), and You please Me most when you meditate on My Sorrowful Passion. Join your little sufferings to My Sorrowful Passion, so that they may have infinite value before My Majesty. (Diary 1512). Brother Knights remember to wear you KC. The Fourth Sunday of the Month is KC Mass at 9:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Church Membership Activities Knights Sunday Breakfast The Knights of Columbus will have a Sunday Breakfast at Mikulski Hall on March 19, 2017 from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. The meal includes: Biscuits and Gravy, Scrambled Eggs, Pancakes, Sausage or Bacon, Coffee, and Orange Juice. The cost is $6.00 Adults and $4.00 for children 12 and under. Children under 5 are free. KNIGHTS SUNDAY Knights Sunday Mass is scheduled for Good Shepard Church on March 19, 2017 at 8:00 AM. Knights Sunday, supported by our Council, is scheduled for Immaculate Conception Church on January 22, 2017 after the 9:45AM Mass. Please support this event to recruit new members. Knights Choir The Knights Choir will sing on Sunday March 19, 2017 at Good Shepherd Church at the 8AM Mass. Rehearsal is at 7:15AM. We are looking forward for more Knights to join us. Lenten Fish Fry The Lenten season is here now. This is a season for us to prepare for Easter by setting aside time to reflect on Jesus suffering, his sacrifice, his life, death and resurrection. Lent is also a time when we as a council raise a significant amount of money to fund our charitable needs. It is a time when we need all brothers that can help to come out and give us a hand. The work is rewarding, and fun. Please consider coming out and share a little of your time with your brothers. Who knows, you may even make new friends! Give it a try! Also, please remember that the bar teams could use help as well. Both special events and bar team rosters are posted on the bulletin board in the hall. If your name is not on one of the rosters and you would like to volunteer, pick a team and sign up. Please consider sharing a bit of your time with your brothers. You ll never hear us complain we have too much help.
