1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN September 13, 2017 A Bi-Monthly Publication The Our Father : A Study in Prayer It s been called the perfect or model prayer, the Pater Noster, the Lord s Prayer. Many were taught its words from the time we are first able to speak. We recite it at church, in times of trouble, at the beginning and end of our day and when we say our final goodbyes to those we love. While Christians may disagree over denominational or doctrinal issues, the words of this prayer (with slight allowances for debts versus trespasses ) seem to unite us regardless of our distinctive beliefs. Interestingly, if we follow its lead in our own prayer lives, we are encouraged to not be halting in making petitions or requests known to God. It s words and phrases are simultaneously comforting beyond mere words and challenging to the nth degree. How can we reclaim the lessons of our Lord s Prayer anew for the times we are living in today? Over the next six weeks, we ll be journeying through a time of engaging the teachings of this prayer taught by our Lord. I hope you will be able to join us for each and every session. 2 UMW CORNER YOGA CLASSES Free yoga classes, provided by Michelle Tomlinson, are being offered in the Christian Life Center Monday evenings through October 16 th at 6:00 p.m. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat. The UMW Fall General Meeting will be held Thursday, September 14 th at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The guest speaker will be Brittany Petty, Vice President of the Covington Garden Club. The title of her talk will be "From Seedlings to Beauty" All women of the church are invited. So come and bring a friend. Coffee and dessert will be served. Circle meetings in October will be held at the following times: Ruth Circle 2 nd Monday of each month 12:00 p.m. Fellowship Hall Mary Martha Circle 2 nd Tuesday of each month 9:30 a.m. New Beginnings Classroom Thank you for your generous donations and purchases during the UMW Books and Baked Goods sale. Your generosity resulted in $ being raised to support the many missions of United Methodist Women. YOUTH UPCOMING EVENTS Friday, September 29 th, there is a Covington High School home football game. FUMC is hosting the 5 th quarter event at the CLC after the game! Fifth Quarter is a youth event (an open gym activity) organized by several of the churches in Covington. Youth will be partnering with other Methodist churches in West TN for Discovery Weekend Fall Retreat, November 3-5 at First United Methodist in Martin, TN. The cost is $25 if paid in the month of September; after this the cost will be $45. Final registration deadline is October 6 th. YOUTH SMALL GROUPS Youth Small Groups: Every Wednesday night high schoolers and middle schoolers meet together in core groups to grow deeper friendships, and develop their faith. Small Groups are a time where as a teenager you can get together with like minded people your age, share about what s going on in your life, pray for one another, learn more about who you are in Christ, and have fun with some of the coolest youth alive! Recently a patron came to the Samaritan office seeking assistance; being on a fixed income she had been having to make some difficult decisions, pay the rent or the electric bill?, buy food or fill prescriptions?. There wasn't enough money for all her needs. She had managed to keep a roof over her head, the electricity on, and to remain on her heart medication, but not her blood pressure pills and she was "beginning to not feel right". The medications she needed were over $80.00 and she just didn't have the funds. Between the Community Assistance Program, (offering free discount drug cards to the public), and the Good Samaritan fund, our new friend is now on the road to feeling better. The financial struggles of those on fixed incomes can be heart wrenching, the generosity of God's people can be heart warming. Thank you, for your generous giving to the Samaritan fund. 5

6 Divorce recovery sessions will be held Wednesday s, September 13 th and 20 th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the GO Classroom. Sessions are led by Cindy Pease, a licensed Christian Counselor who holds a degree in counseling from the University of Memphis and is a professional member of the American Counselors Association and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Cindy believes that the gospel offers hope and the promise of new life to all those who have known the deep pain of the dissolution of a marriage. 6
