1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN January 31, 2018 A Bi-Monthly Publication January 21, Four Primary Objectives for 2018 Covington First United Methodist Church Leadership Team At twelve noon, our Leadership Team convened in the Christian Life Center for the purposes of 1) Determining our primary goals for the coming year and, 2) Orienting new team members to their respective committees and expectations. Tom Rogers led a devotional based on The Disciple-Making Church, by Glenn McDonald. Helene Kramer masterfully facilitated the group discussion and helped the groups arrive at a ranking of various priorities. The groups and work-teams then broke to discuss their plans for the coming year, times of planned meetings and how they would support the objectives below: Enhance and Strengthen Children & Family Ministry. This is viewed as our primary opportunity to make a conscious decision to grow. We believe the 25 to 40 age group is somewhat disconnected at present and we need to be very intentional in our efforts to connect with this group. To achieve this objective, we will need to: a) make a commitment to specific program staffing: children s ministry helpers/assistants, minister of discipleship or teaching minister, or a highly qualified minster to children & families, b) become highly innovative, creative and think out of the box (e.g. offering programs/small group opportunities off-site and at non-traditional times), c) create unique events for the specific purpose of inter-generational fellowship (once-a-month meals, recreational outings, trips) and d) offer more Biblically-based teaching. Intentionally Create a Culture of Broad-based Volunteerism. Strive to define particular (limited in time and scope) and highly specific opportunities for the laity to use their gifts which are finite. (In other words, you don t get stuck forever teaching 3 rd grade Sunday School! ). Stress much more up-front communication and broader publication of volunteer schedules and timetables. Ask more often, expect more and create a culture (over time) of higher demand. Study other congregations who have had success in moving more toward this type of culture and integrate their ideas and specific practices. Work with the laity in discovering their spiritual giftedness and play towards the individuals strengths. Reinforce from the pulpit weekly. Pastoral Staff Rev. 2 Primary Objectives (continued from page 1) Make Safety & Security a Top Priority. Support the work of the newly-formed Safety and Security team, chaired by Dennis Cain. Continue to work with consultant, Brian Fazenbaker (former FBI agent) to monitor our progress toward this goal. Move forward with the needed work on securing numerous entrances. Develop a comprehensive safety/security plan. Emphasize the children s area and develop protocols to ensure this is a top priority in all respects. Procure needed two-way radios for purposes of communication. Develop formal safe sanctuaries procedures and place someone in the position to monitor adherence. Empower laity to own the overall security of the building. Build on Our Greatest Strength: Missions. We are known as the church with the heart of Jesus in dealing with the poor and the disenfranchised. Build on this. Continue to investigate/ research transitional housing for the homeless designed to provide dignity and move them toward independence. Re-emphasize our commitment to dealing with not just physical needs but offering them Christ. Develop Creative Strategic Alliances with other congregations to offer CLC or other facility as a warming/cooling station in extreme weather or emergency situations. Tell the stories more often of the need that is out there. ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE Our Ash Wednesday service will be held February, 14 th at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, and is a day of prayer, fasting, penitence and reflection. Traditionally on this day, a cross is marked on the forehead in ash as a sign of repentance in preparation of Easter. Menu items may include crawfish boil, red beans & rice, jambalaya, and chicken. Fun fact trivia will be played so send in a fun fact about yourself that others may not know. (Facts can be sent to sburgess@covingtonfumc.com or call the church office at ) Children will lead a parade to get everyone involved with their slide whistles and noisemakers (provided). Great jazz music will also be part of this fun-filled evening! Please RSVP by calling the church office by Friday, February 9 th. Scout Sunday Scouts will be recognized during the 11:00 a.m. worship service, Sunday, February 11 th. The Boy Scouts of America provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of citizenship, and develops personal fitness. 3 CONFIRMATION RETREATS Mark your calendars with the dates for these Confirmation retreats being held at Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly in Eva, TN. February 9-11: Being Christian March Being Methodist For more information, please contact Andrew Davis at or Cost is $50 per weekend per participant. YOUTH EVENTS March 2-3, FUMC Covington is hosting UNPLUGGED, a youth conference with the mission to help kids take some intentional time away from their busy schedules to be present with God and their church community. Students are encouraged to come to the whole event if they can; come to only one day or even come to part of a day if that's all their schedule allows! The cost is $20 dollars and that covers, meals, lodging, three worship sessions, a comedy show, and more! You won t want to miss it! ALSO, immediately after Unplugged on Saturday, March 3, we are heading to Memphis for Winter Jam, which is a big Christian concert with a variety of artists for only $15 dollars. The first weekend in March will be packed with many opportunities where youth can experience God in a variety of ways. Come spend the whole weekend with us and take part in these epic events! During the extreme cold, her pipes ruptured above the ceiling causing the ceiling to fall in. She has exhausted her nest egg repairing the pipes and she has the damaged hole in the ceiling where the warm air is escaping. Through the Round Up program, assistance was provided to help with her utility bill which was very high. Also, this freed up funds to complete the ceiling repairs. This patron was most appreciative of the gift during her time of need. 5

6 REV. JOE THORNTON TO VISIT FUMC Rev. Joe Thornton will be our guest preacher Sunday, February 11 th at both services. Joe grew up in Covington and, along with his family, was an active member of Covington First. A graduate of Byars-Hall High School in 1957, he did his undergraduate work at Vanderbilt and University of Memphis. His theological work was done at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX). He married Becky Duffey of Brownsville, and they have two children, Sarah and Richard. Joe and Becky spent most of their adult life serving independent schools in Dallas, New Orleans and Jackson, TN, and conducting study programs abroad while simultaneously serving part-time to small rural churches. He is currently appointed to Lester's Chapel UMC, Jackson, now in his 36th year. He served in a variety of roles at Lambuth University for 15 years including Acting President before retiring in Joe has served as President of the Taylors of Tabernacle Camp Meeting Association for the past 50 years. He and Becky reside in their ancestral home in Brownsville. 6

Two classes are offered; a modified class from 5-6 p.m. for those who may suffer from joint pain; and a regular class from 6-7 p.m. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat.
