7 3/19/2014 PRAY FOR UKRAINE: THE FOCUS Page 7 Last April 28, Rev. Pat Whaley visited First UMC and shared about United Methodist ministry in Ukraine and Russia. His ministry website is ( Home.html) Recently he sent an concerning the unrest in Ukraine. Below is the content: Please continue to pray for Ukraine!! Ukraine is about the size of Texas. I am in Uzhgorod (El Paso, Texas), the capital, Kyiv (Kiev) would be Ft. Worth and Crimea would be Beaumont / Orange Texas in the South East corner. We have 3 churches in Crimea - Sevastopol, Simfropel and Kerch. I have also led Young Adult camps in Kerch and in Sudok. Yalta and the signing to end WWII is in Crimea and the book, War and Peace, was written about Sevastopol. I have spent about 6 months working with our churches here. Please pray for Crimea and all of Ukraine. As I have said many times, Putin will not lose...but, the Power of Jesus Christ can overcome him. Crimea is now in a Russian stranglehold. Next will be Eastern and Southern Ukraine. We must pray for the new President of Ukraine. Two days after he took office, he called together all the Christian leaders and lead them in prayer!! He read from 2 Chronicles 7:14. Our new Interim President is a Baptist Pastor!! Praise be to God!! Some have asked how is it where I am in Uzhgorod. Yes, we had major non-violent protests in the city of Uzhgorod. University students took over the government buildings. The police force resigned and for 8 days we had no police at all. When the former President left, every government agency across Ukraine was thrown into chaos. The former president was paying his people to do the job. He left in disgrace and so every local government, university, hospitals... were closed as new leadership for each agency were selected with no promise of money. On Thursday, the new mayor was stabbed by a gang of Pro-Russians. The last 3 days there has been constant Big Booms as the military prepares to leave and go to Crimea or South East Ukraine. All university male students are expecting this next week to be called in to fight in the military. Each day we are in contact with Pastors and Church leaders across Ukraine to discover what is happening. We receive the news from Russia, Ukraine and European. I also read American news. We are also in contact with Pastors and leaders across Russia! The news is bad but, our God is bigger and stronger!! A little boy shared his lunch and 5,000 were fed. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead! Daniel was in the Lions Den, David only had a sling shot, Gideon had an army of 300 versus 32,000. In every situation, when people are faithful and pray, God can, has and will again give us miracles bigger than we can comprehend. Please pray!! Please have everyone to pray!! God Bless You!! Pat Whaley HOMEMADE BAKED OR CANNED GOODS NEEDED Kendy Erwin, the hospitality coordinator, wishes to share your culinary skills with new visitors to the church and to those returning home from the hospital or medical rehab. If you love to cook, this is an excellent opportunity to share your gifts with others. Kendy is requesting your extra or overage canned items such as salsa, pickles, jellies, jams, etc. OR your baked goods such as breads and or cookies. The hope is to share one of these items with the family when she visits their household. Maybe the next time you are baking or canning, you will plan to make a few extra for this ministry. Of course, your prayers while preparing the food item are a tremendous start before the family visits, etc. If you wish to help with this, please contact Kendy at the church office at or on her cell at

8 Page 8 THE FOCUS 3/19/2014 CHRISTIAN LIFE CENTER PROGRESS So much progress! Brick work is almost completed. The workers are working every day even in snow and bitter cold. SKY ZONE Charlotte Quinley and the 3rd-5th graders went to Sky Zone trampoline park in Jackson, February 16th. We all learned that Jonathan Stewart has great dodging skills. He was last man out of several sets of dodge ball. Mary Catherine Turner knows how to bounce off the side trampoline walls and still keep her balance. The time was too short, but we all had a great experience! COMING EVENT The K-2nd graders will be making Mother s Day crafts, Saturday, May 10th at 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. March 20th!

9 3/19/2014 THE FOCUS Page 9 YOUTH IN SERVICE The youth of FUMC have really taken off in the area of service ministry. From February 28-March 2, eleven youth participated in World Vision s 30 Hour Famine at Lakeshore UMA, along with about 200 other youth from across the Memphis Conference. The youth and three adult leaders fasted for 30 hours to raise money and awareness of hunger around the world. The youth were able to raise over $1,500 for World Vision, the second highest amount at the Lakeshore event! On Saturday March 15 th, nine youth from FUMC Covington and six youth from Munford UMC went to the Soup Kitchen at St. John s UMC in Memphis. A huge thank you goes out from the youth to Naifeh s for cooking 10 frozen lasagnas for us to take to feed 80 people, and even enough for seconds! Way to go Covington and Munford!
