1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN June 28, 2017 A Bi-Monthly Publication I read somewhere that the best way to make an entrance to a gathering or party is to first pause and survey the room before taking any action. (Think of Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Stephen Colbert and other late night talk-show hosts!) It is now time we make our entrance here at Covington First United Methodist. So, we pause! We pause to give thanks for Bishop McAlilly and the Memphis Conference Cabinet in their work of discernment. We pause to give thanks for the Cox family Wade, Susan, Brooke and Davis who have been our good friends for years now. We are so thankful for the good work they have done here among you these last several years. We pause to give thanks for the life and ministry of our colleague, Rev. Grace Phelps. Her legacy is an enduring witness to the best of who and what the local church can be! We pause to grieve with you in the pain and loss you ve experienced which was so unexpected. We have paused to listen and hear clearly the message that Covington First United Methodist is committed to not just talking about discipleship but living it out on a daily basis. We rejoice in the gentle and loving spirit of this congregation which is so apparent. As your new pastor, I want to pause long enough to remind myself of a few things I ve learned along the way.basic truths that never go out of fashion! Like this favorite passage of Scripture-- There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 Like the sage advice our mothers gave us God gave us two ears and one mouth for a good reason learn to listen at least twice as much as you talk! (Don t be afraid to remind your preacher of this if needed ) And this..do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unaware. Hebrews 13:2 Lane and I are honored and delighted to be in your midst. We spent a few days last week moving and unpacking. The parsonage is such a fine home and you have already made us feel so very welcome. We ll be joining you officially in worship on Sunday, July 2 nd. In the meantime, I ll be meeting with the staff and getting out as much as possible to meet some of you in person. I d really enjoy hearing your dreams for this congregation and what God may want to do in and through us. My normal rhythm is to be available Sunday through Thursday and to take Fridays as a personal day. 2 UMW CORNER WELCOME REV. DAN CAMP Rev. Dan Camp s first Sunday to preach will be Sunday, July 2 nd. A reception to welcome Rev. Camp and his wife, Lane, will be held Sunday, July 9 th in the Fellowship Hall following the 11:00 a.m. service. United Methodist Women are collecting packs of notebook paper to be distributed July 7 th at the Back to School Fest at Covington High School. This event is sponsored by Department of Children s Services. Please drop off your donations in the boxes provided in the lobby of the Christian Life Center or at the entrance under the awning in the upper parking lot. Join us for our Community Worship Night on Wednesday, July 26 th at 6:00 p.m. This will be a contemporary style worship in the CLC with multiple churches invited. This worship is for all ages as we will be giving praise to God and praying for the upcoming year. It's open to anyone and everyone who wants to come! For more information, please contact Doris Ann Gray at dorisanngray1@gmail.com. YOUTH MISSION TRIP Nine youth and adults traveled to Nashville, June to attend Collide. This was a unique week that combined service and mission work with the opportunity to attend worship of varying denominations, have multiple devotion times and sample a variety of ethnic cuisine. Not only were those in the Nashville helped, but each group participating grew closer to each other and closer to God. This person must be 21 or older, able to work Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights and other opportunities such as Bible studies, church meetings, VBS and/or practices, which could be days or evenings. She meekly requested maybe a couple of nights at a hotel and some hygiene things. The interview process revealed that this young woman was released from prison and had attempted to start over in Nashville and soon found herself in a bad situation. To escape, she accepted an invitation from her cousin, to come here to Tipton County. She started out driving her old car which broke down. Upon arriving at her cousin s home she quickly discovered this was an environment she did not need to be a part of. She started walking, in the middle of the night, down dark country roads lined for what seemed like miles of corn fields. By daybreak she found herself in a community where she knew no one. She had no money, no job, no home, no food, and no idea where to go or what to do from here. She was directed to our church. Further discussion found the woman s mother and grandmother did live in Tennessee, they would welcome her, and provide her with the opportunity to build a new life in a safe environment. Many phone calls were made, schedules checked, and arrangements made. Thanks to the generosity of Good Samaritan donors by the time you read this, this young lady will be home with her mom and granny, making the most of a new start to a new life, with a new hope. We are blessed to be a blessing. 5

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR MASON INITIATIVE IN MISSION The Mason Initiative in Mission (MIM) was formed in order to address the needs of the children living in the Mason community. It is the only satellite branch of the United Methodist Neighborhood Center that is located outside of Shelby County. A three week day camp will begin July 10. Volunteers and supplies are needed.
