1 bread of life celebrates six years! FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN Thank you for your faithful service to Bread of Life feeding ministry. On April 10 we celebrated 6 years of service to needy Tipton county folks through Bread of Life. Your service, your prayers, your financial support, and your compassion for those in need have made that possible. God has provided for this ministry so abundantly we have indeed been blessed so that we might be a blessing! Each year since 2010, we have provided food to over 1,100 Tipton county families, most of whom are unemployed, underemployed, disabled or elderly. Many households rely on this food to help them make ends meet. We are likely to see a significant increase in households coming for food due to changes in the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) formerly known as food stamps laws which took effect January Under this change in the law, many persons who are unable to find work will lose their food stamp benefits this month. Following are some statistics about Bread of Life s impact on the community: Total food distributed : 1,159,732 lbs. (579.8 tons) Mid-South Food Bank: 884,863 lbs. (76%) Wal-Mart donations: 148,341 lbs. (13%) Kroger donations: 31,637 lbs. (3%) Save-A-Lot donations: 18,835 lbs. (1%) Donated / purchased food: 76,056 lbs. (7%) (Food drives, Hunters for the Hungry donations, fresh produce donations, etc.) Total cost for food : $94,545 (all freewill giving by individuals, churches, and community organizations) Cost per pound: 8.1 cents Average number of household served per month in 2015: Covington FUMC 228 Munford FUMC 188 Average monthly breakdown of those served: Households with children 45% Households without children 55% Small households (1-3 persons) 62% Medium households (4-6 persons) 29% Large households (7-10 persons) 9% In addition to helping needy families with food, the other important aspect of this ministry is the spiritual encouragement offered to those who come. The time of worship offered prior to the food distribution each Saturday allows volunteers and guests to join together in praising God, offering prayers for one another, and giving thanks for God s grace and mercy in so many ways. The qualifiers who meet individually with guests invite prayer requests and those are lifted by a prayer team at FUMC in Covington on Sunday mornings. 2 HANNAH S HOPE The Children s Department is supporting Hannah s Hope this semester by filling Baby Bottles of Hope. Each Wednesday night, children and their families may contribute their offering into large baby bottles provided in each classroom to help support this local West Tennessee ministry. This ministry is offered at no cost to any woman in need through the support of churches and individuals, so that women and their babies can experience the grace of Christ in their time of need. Collection will take place each Wednesday through April 20 th. Hannah s Hope CHURCH-WIDE CELEBRATION, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27 TH You are invited to a church-wide celebration as we gear up for our summer activities and Vacation Bible School. Join us Wednesday, April 27 th, at 5:30 p.m. for a cookout at the Christian Life Center followed by games and fellowship. You won t want to miss it! Call the church office, , to make reservations. SPECIAL WORSHIP Come worship with us, Sunday, April 24 th as the children of FUMC will recite the ABC s of the Bible and scripture during both services at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. CHILDREN S MOVIE NIGHT Join us Friday, April 22 nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Christian Life Center for a drive-in movie of Cars. Please bring your car from the previous movie night or help your child decorate a box as an automobile to "drive in" to the movie. You may decorate as much or as little as you like. Pizza and popcorn will be served. All are welcome with or without a car. At least one parent must accompany their child. FIVE PRACTICES OF FRUITFUL CONGREGATIONS SERMON SERIES People are searching for a church shaped and sustained by Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service, and Extravagant Generosity. These fundamental practices are critical to the success of congregations. Their presence and strength demonstrate congregational health, vitality, and fruitfulness. By repeating and improving these practices, churches fulfill their mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Rev. Wade and Rev. Grace will focus on these practices in a five-week sermon series: Sunday, April 3 rd : Radical Hospitality Sunday, April 10 th : Passionate Worship Sunday, April 17 th : Intentional Faith Development Sunday, April 24 th : Risk-Taking Mission and Service Sunday, May 1 st : Extravagant Generosity 2

3 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Go spelunking through dark caves with Jesus as your light at Cave Quest Vacation Bible School June th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon each day. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.! Children learn Jesus is the one who lights our way and gives us hope for each new day. His love illuminates when the path is dark. Register your child in advance April 27 th at the celebration (see page 2 article for details) and parents can sign-up to be a volunteer teacher, helper or decorator. Registration forms will also be available on the bulletin boards leading to the Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING SENIORS The HOPE Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church will be hosting a luncheon for high school graduates and their families Sunday, May 15, 2016, honoring the youth of the church in the graduating class of The worship service is at 11:00 a.m. and the luncheon will follow in the Christian Life Center. Graduating seniors are Kristin Burgess, Ethan Carpenter, Ally Naifeh, Amanda Phillips, Storm Smith and Haylee Timberlake. During the luncheon, there will be a slide show presentation including pictures of each graduate throughout the years. Please submit to the church office five photographs of the student, including a senior picture. Please bring the pictures you wish to include to the church office or pictures to sburgess@covingtonfumc.com by May 6 th. Lunch reservations are required by calling the church office at CONGRATULATIONS 2016 CONFIRMATION CLASS Congratulations to the 2016 Confirmation Class. Davis Cox, Jacob Leyvas and Jonathan Stewart participated in Wednesday evening classes for 10 weeks learning what it means to follow Jesus. Their dedication culminated in their decision to join the church Sunday, April 3rd. We celebrate with them and welcome them to our FUMC church family. 4 UMW CORNER Reservations will be accepted until April 25 th for the United Methodist Women s retreat to Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly April 29-May 1. Each Sunday, team members go to the chapel to pray over requests received during MorningSong service, Traditional worship and from food pantry patrons. You may volunteer to pray during MorningSong or Traditional worship times. HOMEMADE BAKED OR CANNED ITEMS NEEDED Kendy Erwin, the hospitality coordinator, wishes to share your culinary skills with new visitors to the church and to those returning home from the hospital or medical rehab. If you love to cook, this is an excellent opportunity to share your gifts with others. Kendy is requesting your extra or overage canned items such as salsa, pickles, jellies, jams, etc. OR your baked goods such as breads and cookies. The hope is to share one of these items with the family when she visits their household. 6 UMW READING PROGRAM The United Methodist Women 2016 Reading Program has begun. The reading resource library is located in the hallway leading to the Fellowship Hall. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women to: Expand understanding of and participation in God s mission. Increase sensitivity to all human beings their needs, interests and concerns. Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today. Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge. Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission. Books are divided into five mission categories: Education for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, Social Action and Spiritual Growth. To get started on your reading program: Pick up a brochure to keep track of the books you read. Choose one of the four program plans. Sign out the books you would like to read on the sheet provided. When you have finished reading, return the books to the resource library and sign them back in. When all of the required reading for the plan you have chosen is fulfilled, place your completed reading program brochure in the envelope provided. A bag of books will also be provided to each UMW Circle at their monthly meeting. Lakeshore is now accepting registration for 2016 Summer camps. Many different camps are being offered for children ages 5 and up. Information and an application is available on the bulletin board leading to the Sanctuary. Registration may also be completed online by visiting Lakeshore s website, Covington FUMC pays 50% of one camp per year. Offered to children of members. 6
