McAlilly of the Nashville Episcopal Area to all United Methodists through the Memphis and Tennessee Annual Conferences to engage in a special season of fasting and prayer in preparation for the 2014 sessions of both annual conferences. Starting on Monday, April 21, 2014 (the Monday following Easter) congregations throughout the region are asked to join together in a common practice of devotion using the guide prepared by the spiritual formation teams of the Memphis and Tennessee Annual Conference. A print version has been shared with every church, and a printable PDF version will be available via the link below. 9 4/16/2014 THE FOCUS Page 9 SAMARITAN STORIES: A woman who has been married for 23 years came in for help with her rent and emergency food. Her husband had beaten her two weeks prior. She had him arrested and is pressing charges. But, since he is the breadwinner in the household, he took all their money with him, including their food stamp card. They have three children and she has been a stay-at-home mom for many years. We were able to provide help with her rent through the Samaritan fund and a food distribution from the food pantry. A grandmother who is raising her three grandchildren came to the church with an unusually high electric bill because of the very cold weather. She is blind in one eye, but had been working as a sitter with an elderly woman. However, her adult daughter (mother of the three children) has a drug problem and had to go to in-patient rehab, leaving no one to pick up the children after school and care for them. She expressed hopes that her daughter had finally hit rock bottom and would clean up and be a responsible parent when she gets out of rehab. We were able to help her with both her utility bills under the Operation Round-Up program. Two Samaritan individuals have found employment! One individual has a psychology degree and through a very difficult process is currently homeless. He begins work on Monday! The second individual has two small children and was homeless about 30 days ago. Since then, she has gained housing through a government agency and is employed! Please join in these accomplishments and continue prayer for them as they transition to these new jobs.
