1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN March 13, 2019 A Bi-Monthly Publication Lenten Devotional From a Compilation of Daily Family Lenten Devotionals by First United Methodist Church members under the leadership of Rev. Frank H. Bulle in The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. - Psalm 23:1 Immediately after World War II the Allied armies gathered up many hungry, homeless children and placed them in large camps. There the children were abundantly fed and cared for. However, at night they did not sleep well. They seemed restless and afraid. Finally, a psychologist hit on a solution. After the children were put to bed, they each received a slice of bread to hold. If they wanted more to eat, more was provided, but this particular slice was not to be eaten it was just to hold. The slice of bread produced marvelous results. The child would go to sleep, subconsciously feeling it would have something to eat tomorrow. That assurance gave the child a calm and peaceful rest. In the Twenty-third Psalm, David points out something of the same feeling when he says, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Instinctively the sheep knows the shepherd has made plans for its grazing tomorrow. Or as the little girl recited, The Lord is my shepherd, and that s all I want. -Mrs. R.A. 2 Senior Adults on the Move! Ark Encounter Williamstown, KY Mon., April 22 nd Wed., April 24th Mark your calendars and make your plans! We will plan on departing from the church parking lot via church bus at approximately 8:30 AM on Monday, April 22 nd. Williamstown, KY and the Ark Encounter is an approximately 7 hour trip from Covington. Enroute, we ll have a nice lunch, plan on visiting the Swopes Antique Car Museum in Elizabethtown, KY and dinner before checking into our hotel for the evening. Tuesday will be a day spent touring the Ark and the attached museum. This huge replica of the Ark is not without controversy. If interested, please read this article from the New York Times: Notwithstanding some of the criticism, the Ark replica is literally almost in our back yard and well, we re always up for a springtime trip right? Tuesday evening we will dine in Williamstown and get a good night s rest before starting the return journey. If all goes according to plan, we should arrive in the church parking lot around 4 PM Wednesday afternoon. Cost of the trip is $325 and includes all meals, gratuities and lodging (based on double occupancy). For questions or to sign up, please contact Pastor Dan via cellphone (731) or by dcamp@covingtonfumc.com. 2

Currently mentors are actively coaching students at both Covington Integrated Arts Academy and Crestview Elementary School. The majority of ARISE2Read students will exit the second grade prepared for the third. To guard against losing any acquired reading skills over the summer months, we wish to provide each of the 65 Tipton County ARISE2Read students with a Summer reading backpack. Each backpack will contain a bookmark, pencils, crayons, stickers, six books of varying titles and reading levels, and an Activity packet. Each packet will include Scholastic 100 Words Kids Need to Read by 3 rd Grade, an activity book, word searches, Fry Sight Word list, Parents Guide to Summer Reading, a Helping with Homework sheet, and many other fun items. The cost of each filled backpack will be approximately $ Your gifts will help make this a reality. Church Ave., Covington, TN,
4 And roll they did!! First United Methodists 2nd Annual Shrove Tuesday Celebration was an evening filled with good food, lively music, and wholesome Christian fellowship. A New Orleans Evening, as we have dubbed this event, was attended by approximately 200 individuals from our church and community. Members of Community Fellowship Worship Center joined in the evenings festivities, posing for pictures in the photo booth, marching in the New Orleans style parade, and even pitching in with clean up. We were blessed meeting new friends and followers of Christ. Jhonnaya Wilcox, Boys and Girls Club of the Hatchie River Regions Youth of the Year, was in attendance along with her mother, Sialene Wilcox, and Chief Executive Officer James Moore. Jhonnaya eloquently spoke about her challenging early childhood experiences and the positive influence the Boys and Girls Club has had on her young life. Proceeds collected in and above the cost of the meal were designated to the Boys and Girls Club. Entertainment for the evening was provided by the musical talents of Billy Adams, on drums, Tommy Cheairs, Chris Croteau on sax, and Mario Hayslett on the keyboard, with a grand finale which included our very own, Dustin Phelps, Keith Phelps, and Carole Mathis, the trombone trio! The evening would not have been possible without the cooking talents of so very many within our congregation! The legion of chefs were led by none other than Reverend Dan Camp, with a menu that included, gumbo, shrimp and grits, fried okra, jambalaya, salad, chicken tenders, and of course, a crawfish boil. To top off the meal deserts of pecan pie and king cake were readily available. It was a fantastic evening, if you missed it you may want to go ahead and mark your calendars for next year! 4
5 Youth Updates! Unplugged was a multi-church weekend event where we encouraged students to take a break and "unplug" from their regular lives to plug into God, their youth group, and our community. Students worshiped, ate together, played games, participated in service projects, and stayed over night at the church! One of our service projects at Unplugged was making care packages with thank you notes for the fire department, police department, paramedics, and Tipton county sheriff s department. In this picture, we delivered the packages to the fire department and they were overjoyed to receive them. This past week Pastor Dan taught the Confirmation Class about the worship service and all the different parts of the sanctuary, and vestments used in worship. 5
6 KIDS FIRST Updates! In Sunday School we learned the story of the Lost Lamb and Lost Coin. We made our own lambs for snack and wandered our way through an obstacle course in our hallways. The children learned a great story of kindness and loyalty. We had a visit from Naomi and learned her and Ruth s story. The kids made kindness bags to give out to special friends. KIDS FIRST wants everyone to know they are Welcome here! We made welcome mosaics to hang in our hallways and entrances. 6
7 United Methodist Women gathered for their monthly meeting Monday, March 11 th and enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Chef Dan. After a brief devotion, the ladies packaged up items for 100 individual health kits to be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Kits included a hand towel, washcloth, toothbrush, comb, bandages, nail clippers, and soap. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the purchase of supplies for the kits for this important ministry! A big thank you to Covington FFA s continued dedication to the Bread of Life Food Pantry. This group volunteers twice a month at our Covington location and unloads our Mid South Food Bank cans and boxed goods. Our Bread of Life Food Pantry is supported completely by free will giving and volunteers. It is truly a community effort to help alleviate hunger in our county. A big thank you to SRVS Tipton, Girl Scout Troop 11384, and FUMC Unplugged for your help this month. 7

The disease and it s treatments cause her to be unable to fulfill the daily tasks required of her job and she finds herself unemployed. She readjusts her lifestyle, moves into public housing, qualifies for SNAP benefits and lives within the means allotted to her through child support. The father of the children changes jobs and the court ordered child support payments got lost and delayed in the shuffle, causing financial hardship on the mother and her household. She begins to seek help and is directed to First United Methodist Church, where she and her children touch the hearts of volunteers and volunteers guide her through the application for RoundUp assistance. Learning that her entire bill would be covered by the RoundUp program visibly reduce the stress this woman was enduring. Please keep this woman, her family and others like her in our community, close in your prayers. and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
