1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Covington, TN October 25, 2017 A Bi-Monthly Publication Just doing my job (That s what the man said!) The man in question was Chesley Sully Sullenberger. You may remember that Sully was the U.S. Airlines pilot who successfully navigated a jet with 155 people aboard to an emergency landing on the Hudson river on January 15, I got a chance to finally watch the movie starring Tom Hanks that was made about this event. What happened was something of a freak incident. As U.S. Airlines flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia airport on a frigid winter s day, the plane encountered a large flock of Canada geese. Even jet engines have their weaknesses and one thing that wreaks havoc with a jet engine is a big bird or two. The geese disabled BOTH engines. In a matter of about thirty seconds, Sully and his co-pilot had to make decisions which might save (or lose) the lives of everyone aboard. One option was to return to LaGuardia. A second alternative was to attempt a landing at Teterboro airport in nearby New Jersey. A third option was to attempt an emergency ditching or water landing. In a very brief period of time, Captain Sullenberger weighed his options and elected to attempt the impossible a water landing. Post-landing investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board questioned the wisdom of this course of action. Subsequent computer simulations and reenactments would not only prove the correctness of his decision but would demonstrate he made the only life-saving decision possible. An attempted return to LaGuardia or re-directing to Teterboro would most certainly have resulted in crashes which, most likely, have yielded no survivors. As it turned out, everyone aboard survived, only a few were injured and Captain Sullenberger was the last to leave the plane only after he was certain everyone on the passenger manifest had been accounted for. Sully Sullenberger became an overnight sensation and a modern-day hero. He was asked to appear on late-night talk shows and was an honored guest at President Obama s inauguration. Through it all, he maintained a humble attitude. Instead of promoting himself, he spoke of the people in his life who had trained him and was always modest about his own abilities. He did not volunteer the fact that he was a graduate of the Air Force Academy (Class of 1973) and holds master s degrees from both Purdue University and The University of Northern Colorado. He neglected to mention that he had been a U.S. Air Force pilot flying F-4 Phantom II jets, had 29 years experience under his belt as a commercial pilot and had earned membership in the aircraft accident investigation board. When pressed, he said, One way of looking at this might be that for 42 years I ve been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. On January 15, 2009, the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal. Sully Sullenberger serves as a great example of a humble servant in a day and age when humility seems to be in very short supply. Humility is a virtue that is rooted in the notion that all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. (Matthew 23:12) Pastor Dan Pastoral Staff Rev. Unfortunately, there are very few people that have learned that skill and it therefore makes it difficult for those individuals to be gone. If you would be willing to occasionally fill the roles of camera operation, sound technician, and video operator, would you please contact Keith Phelps or let the church office know. The amount of time required is minimal but would enable each of those volunteers to have someone who could share that duty when needed. First United Methodist Church 145 W.
