4 Page 4 THE FOCUS 8/6/2014 NOTE FROM BERNIE LILES I saw my breast cancer doctor Tuesday and received good news. I have passed the 2 year and 7 month period with no re-occurrence of the cancer. To all of you who have remembered me in your prayers; many, many thanks! God Bless you for your ongoing prayers as the next three years are a critical time for re-occurrence. Also, I saw my cardiologist and considering the damage done in the November episode and the stent placement in February, the blood work and exam were encouraging. Thanks be to God and my Church Family. PROMOTION SUNDAY Promotion Sunday was August 3rd and was an exciting day for the children being promoted to the next grade in their Sunday School classes. 8 Page 8 THE FOCUS 8/6/2014 DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY Plans are underway to again offer Disciple Bible Study this fall. Disciple Bible Study (DBS) is an intensive, disciplined Bible study program. There are four separate curriculums, and Disciple I is the only pre-requisite for Disciple II, III and IV. Small groups meet once a week (2.5 hours) for 34 weeks (school year). Many at FUMC have taken at least one, and some have taken all four. For those who have completed all four DBS courses, and for those that might like something different, Covenant Bible Study may also be offered. This study emphasizes the Biblical concept of covenant. If you have completed any DBS course or if you are interested in participating, please contact Tom Rogers at nliberty@aol.com. SAMARITAN STORY This was a difficult week because we had more than 20 requests for lodging, utility assistance and rent whom we had to turn away because of no available Good Samaritan funds. We did process 4 utility assistance requests under Operation Round-Up. The balance of those needing utility help did not meet the criteria for Round-Up assistance. One of those helped under Round-Up was a woman who had been laid off from her job. Her husband drives a truck but his hours have not been very consistent. They were required to move to a different house by the Covington Housing Authority. As part of that move, they were charged a $275 maintenance charge that they were not anticipating and had no resources to pay. In addition, their home had been burglarized. When we completed her application and handed her the check for her utility bill, she expressed her appreciation and surprise. She said she expected it to be a very complicated process that would take several days to complete. She commented that in a week when so many bad things had happened to them, this was a bright spot a glimmer of hope when someone was kind to them. Thank you, thank you and God bless you! she said with tears in her eyes. 11 8/6/2014 THE FOCUS Page 11 SPECIAL SERVICE OF HEALING PRAYER On Sunday afternoon, August 17 at 4:00 p.m., you are invited to be part of a special service of healing prayer in our sanctuary. Spiritual healing is God s work of restoring balance, harmony, and wholeness of body, mind, spirit and relationships. We will spend time together in a quiet, reflective way soaking in the words of scripture and song in which God s promises of his presence and power to restore are affirmed. Persons who are in need of healing in some way for physical, mental or emotional health; for those who are struggling with grief, brokenness in a relationship or other kinds of loss; - are all invited to come and offer their prayers and be lifted in the prayers of others. Invite friends and family to come with you to stand with you at the altar as you pray, to lay hands on you as they pray for your needs. The gentle laying on of hands is a tangible expression of the presence of the healing Christ, working in and through those who minister in his name. If you desire, you may be anointed with healing oil as prayers are lifted. In the Christian tradition, anointing the forehead with oil represents the healing love of God through the action of the Holy Spirit. This service is open to anyone in the community who would like to be lifted in prayer for God s healing and sustaining presence and power. Please invite friends, neighbors and family. ALTAR CARE Altar Care is managed by Bernie Liles and Charlotte Jones. They are responsible for cleaning the altar area each week, changing the paraments at the appropriate times and placing any flowers brought into the sanctuary. They are at the church Thursday afternoons from 1:00-3:00 p.m. For inquiries about Altar Care, please contact Bernie Liles, WORSHIP BROADCASTS Live radio broadcast of the Traditional Worship on WKBL AM 11 a.m. Delayed broadcast of the Traditional Worship on KBJ Cable TV, Channel 5 (city) and 19 (county) - Sundays at 1:00 p.m.; Tuesdays at 12 Noon. MorningSong broadcast is on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. Also, live streaming of the traditional service is available at as well as streaming of past services, at any time.
