These classes focused on faith and health. The first week we explored healing in the history of Christianity and John Wesley's theological and practical wisdom on health as part of the Christian Faith. Here are some tidbits: The medical community often focuses on finding a cure. The church community often focuses on healing. These are not the same thing. Cure is returning to the same state before one had the disease. Healing is a transformation that occurs as a result of endured suffering. The Christian community should be an instrument of healing. I was amazed at how much of his time our founder, John Wesley, devoted to the practical care of the whole person. Our body and soul are interconnected. The church's focus is not just caring for the souls and our bodies are much more than a commodity. We are created in the image of God and our spiritual healing is connected to our physical health. Wesley also focused on wellness, not just pathology on which much of our modern medical care concentrates. The second week we focused more on community health, exploring the social determinants of health and the role the church can play in healthcare. The degree to which you feel in control of your life affects your health. A person's zip code often tells us more about health than one's genetic code. A person's health is determined 20% by what happens to their body; the remaining 80% are social and behavioral determinants such as education, income, and race. The religious community is uniquely situated and structured to bring healing because how we live is connected to what we believe. As a church we are well positioned to build upon our current acts of charity to a point that not only will others be helped, but our own lives will be transformed. Two ways I propose for us as a church to adopt a focus of wellness and a spirit of wholeness: To focus the use of the CLC as a place of wellness for staff, church, and community, and to build upon the existing structure of the Bread of Life food pantry by offering a more holistic approach to wellness through a health component. The place to begin is by learning what a person needs through listening to their story. If you are interested in exploring any of these areas with me, please contact me. To fruitful faith and better health, Wade

IMAGINE NO MALARIA CAMPAIGN CONTINUES In the spring of 2014, Bishop Bill McAlilly, the episcopal leader of the Memphis and Tennessee conferences, challenged all congregations to raise $1 million to benefit the UMC Imagine No Malaria campaign to eradicate malaria in Africa. This initiative, originally begun by the global UMC in 2006 as the Nothing But Nets effort which provided mosquito sleeping nets to people all over Africa, was expanded in 2008 to Imagine No Malaria, a much broader initiative. In addition to providing sleeping nets, INM works with local communities in Africa on sanitation, prompt medical treatment and education on preventive measures. Our contributions have helped make tremendous progress toward the goal of eradicating malaria sickness and deaths on the African continent. As of March 31, 2015, the people of the Memphis and Tennessee conferences have raised $361,878 toward the $1 million goal set by our Bishop. At our annual conference gatherings in early June, churches will be asked to bring additional contributions toward our goal. When we gather for worship Sunday, May 31 st, we will have the opportunity to make a contribution toward this important health campaign for our brothers and sisters in Africa. Please give prayerful consideration toward making a gift at that time.

8 Page 8 THE FOCUS 05/27/2015 SAMARITAN HELP NEEDED: With the school year ending, many Covington and Tipton County households will face additional financial responsibilities as the children are home every day. During the school year, breakfast and lunch are served by the school system allowing some relief on the household budget. With the children at home, the household utilities will increase too. At this time, the Samaritan fund is at a deficit (-$124.95) prompting requests to be declined. In recent days, declines have been made to households requesting lodging, utility assistance (household does not meet Round-Up criteria) and vehicular gas for medical appointments. Please consider making a gift to the Samaritan fund to replenish the resources and allow awards to be made. If you wish to make a gift, please contact Grace Phelps at gphelps@covingtonfumc.com or Holley Morris at hmmorris@covingtonfumc.com or call the church office at ROUND-UP UTILITY ASSISTANCE REPORT May 9 through May 22, 2015: 4 households interviewed CES: 3 interviews Approved 1 household totaling $ Declined 1 households totaling $ CGWS: 3 interviews Approved 1 household totaling $ Declined 2 household totaling $ NEW BREAD OF LIFE LOCATION A SUCCESS The Bread of Life food pantry began operation at our new location, Munford United Methodist Church, on Saturday, May 23 rd.
