MAINE, THURSDAY, DECEMBEB 13,1917 PRICE TEN CKNTS $ GREATEST WAR CONDITIONS PREVENT ORATOR ADDRESSES TRIP OE MUSICAL CLUBS STUDENTS IN CHAPEL -* ~ ra1la HIS COMING A COMPLETE SURPRISE Bates was favored last Thursday by havng Amerca'a greatest orator (fve the students a talk on Publc Speakng. Wllam Jennngs Bryan lectured n Lewston a week ago and spoke to the students brefly al noon. Hs address was " : subject that Is approprate here at Bates where so much stress s ps I upon effectve publc speakng and doubly mpressve when lng from a mn who s known nl over the cvlzed world as ; m or and statesman. The students bad I n lookng forward for some tme to the leetnre In Cty Hall and were agreeably surprsed when Presdent Chase announced n chapel that Mr. Bryan would appear n the chapel at l o'clock. Nearly every able boded student was on hand at tlnt hour " greet one of the upperclassmen wth cheers as he appeared on the platform wth a Btand. Boon after tlw speaker appeared wth Presdent Chase and Mr. Boauleu. The applause was long and fervent. After the short ntroductory words of the Presdent, Mr. Bryan quelled the nose ns soon as possble tn remark that be notced they had cheered the one who preceded hm and that they must remember there was one n come after hm, wth the water..lust then n came another Senor wth n ptcher of water and a glass. He dd m take advantage of hs opportunty for applause, however, but left hs burden on the organst's bench. The address seemed short, yet t was nearlv two o'clock before classes were begun. Mr. Bryan attempted no rhetorcal flghts whch so often pose as oratory, le merely talked to the man and woman. le dd not rase hs voce, yet everyone heard, le dd not enthuse only c e when hs tone hardened and hs whole body became tense as he urged the need of publc speakers to offset a subsdzed press, vet the nterest dd no! lag once. The topc was vastly dfferent from that whch most hal e.\ ted, an.i was only very brefly preceded by remarks on the great place of the small college n producng educated men and women anl gvng tone am element whch the larger unversty cannot gve. He also outlned hs subject of the evenng, the three fundamental relatons of man. to the government under whch In- lves, to socety of whch le s a part and to Col, ks Creator. In commentng on woman suffrage he sad that the natonal stuaton was most favorable anl that Mane would have suffrage for tll, even f the outsde world had to force t upon her. la Introducng hs topc, he declared Unt he always used water on the stage, even though le undent 1 l t was condem I as a had practce. le further stated that h' would stop dong so when he had the advce from anyone who had more experence than he hmself had obta I n hs ::; years of publc lfe. Orators may be born and not made, but just lke most people, beng born may he most necessary, lmt t. s only a small part of sac,-ess. An orator should know hs subject thoroughly; he convnced that t s somethng that people should know and then he wll have, the necessary earnestness to make hs words effectve. :o c mght he lelned us the sp h of one wdo understands hs subject and feels that t should be spoken. These are the fundamentals whch are most essental to effectve publc speakng. There are other ads, however, that may assst \ n obtanng a hearng. These are clearness of statement, brevty and concseness, llustratons from coma lfe and the summne up of the whole theme s one vtal queston. The truth s self evdent, merely brng t out clearly. Proverbs an.i epgrams are excellent. Use lttle Manager Ooogns of the Muscal Clubs n s that the usual Massa chusetts trp of the clubs wll not be taken. le has made all efforts to secure the dates and apparently had arranged a trp. Later, however, can collatons came n from so many places that t s ed best ant to attempt to go out of the state. The war eondl ons Were gven a- the reason why most of the concerts eollbl not be held. The clubs make ther ntal appear anee at Lsbon Palls next Wednesday evenng and bd far to have a fne program. After that the next trp wll start about New Year's, 'fle dates are not defntely arranged a- yet because the manager wshes to secure cm ts at a few more towns. Ths trp wll take n Sanford, Waterboro, Gorham, Portland and Bddeford and probably one or two other places. EvTegot atons are also under way wth Bangeley, Phllps, strong and Parmngton. If suffcent concerts can be secured, the clubs wll take n those towns m lately after he frst. agagements are over. To make up for the loss of the long Massachusetts ourney, there s a poss blty of a trp through central Mane n the Bprng. Ths wll depend on con dtolls at college tt that tme. The students wll have an opportunty! to hear the clubs n Lewston at Cty Hall some tme n January. The exact date wll be announced later. There s an doubt but that the combned clubs wll have a lne program. We have already prnted the makeup of the clubs. SWEDISH SYSTEM GIVES WAV TO GERMAN IN GIRLS' GYMNASIUM WORK LATTER INCLUDES INDIAN CLUB AND WAND DRILLS The plans for the grls' gymnasum work durng the wnter ate somewhat dfferent from those of past years. The Swedsh system of gym nastes, whch las always been used at Hates, lavs -real emphass m the correctve effects nt' floor drll and carefully supervsed apparatus work. Each class wll specalze n some one thng ths wnter: the Preshmen wll work on folk dancng: the Junors wll have wand drlls, and the Senors wll be traned n the use of Indan clubs. The gymnasum s alto-ether too small for tns veal's classes, and so t s mpossble to have as much marchng as s desrable; but the Sophomore class, whch s the smallest, s gong to pay specal attenton to mltary marchng. In addton to the regular gymnasum tranng, there wll shortly be organzed two classes normal work, one for Sophomores, and one for Junors and Senors. Twelve Sophomores have al ready sgned up for ths course. The purpose of the work s to prepare grls to teach physcal t n hj< b -. hools, and to enable them to at once to do BOCal servce work. The department s serously handcappod, however, by the lack of specal correctve apparatus: grls wth curvature of the spne, for example, should have specal exercses whch are not now possble. The shower baths connected wth the gymnasum have long been a source of vexaton to everyone who has tred III use them. "Tn' world expects a great deal of the college grl under the most ordnary condtons; how much more then does t have a rght to expect now.' la order n fulfll I he requrements whch we must lve up to. we must have three thngs, three essental characterstcs: "The lrst of these s a broader vewpont, the power to lft ourselves out of the cramped narrowness of our daly lves and to thnk n terms of the world. The second s cheerfulness, an ablty to fght that morbdness whch s about a- exceptonal nowadays as hunger and sleeplessness. W< I more cheerfulness, an ncreased ablty to look on the brght sde of thngs and to rse above the nsgnfcant trals and vexatons of every day. "The thrd essental s a larger fath: lor we are eon!uully meetng 'dal lengea for our fath. We read of the ravages of war and catch a glmpse of a world of sn and sufferng that makes our hearts ache. We are called upon lo explan the nvsteres of nature, of everyday lfe. The secrets of thngs are brought to us by the revelatons of bology and chemstry, the hstory of peoples, the scence of economcs, and the mysteres "f psychology. They ncrease our fath: they cannot destroy t. For we need to see a larger God and a greater t'hrst. Let us not be afrad of Truth because Trust leads never from God, but always to Hm. "Ld. you ask, how can we gan tn thngs, and ganed, how can we gve expresson to them.' fan you thnk of any 'utter way of showng our patrotsm than by gettng a broad vew of the present world stuaton, by mantanng a cheerful and courageous sprt n sple of that stuaton, and by trustng n an all lovng father, belevng that all s for the best, even though we cannot understand. "Lut. yn say t s too dealst e; t s askng too much of human nature to be cheerful when natons ;1 re beng mr dered, to smle when our brothers and frends are taken from us nto the servce of our country; and I answer you n the words of Brownng: " Mll, but a man's reach should exceed hs grasp. or what 's a Heaven fur." " The meetng dosed wth a solo by Evelyn Bussey, "Peace I Leave wth r*ou. PLACE PHYSICAL YORK ON SOUND BASIS New Equpment And Facltes Along wlh the genera] ncrease n physcal work whch has been specally manfested n mltary drll s a general manfestaton n all knds of sport and exercse. I'elhaps Ihe greatest j addton s the nstallaton of ffty Nar-I ragansett lockers, the best out. They! are arranged n the basement where tho bowlng alleys wee and the room has I n parttoned nl' leavng a smaller room for other purposes, such as tarl ng and puttng Ihe shot. Tho lockers are large, wholly made of steel anl are connected wth an elaborate and elleent ventlatng system. These long needed convenences were lllnde possble through he generosty of the Alumn of the COll lldoo Football wll s be well under way. There wll be defnte, postve, actual credt for physcal work for Ihe men of the three lower classes of Bates ths Wnter. Ths means tha you wll get a certan number of hours credt for your physcal wnk and ths wll bo added to the requrements for hours at the end of your collog rse. It also means that a cut n gym counts just as any oler cut does, demands an excuse, and a sutleeul number wll remove an hour from your credts lke oler cuts, llenee. beware! Ths s the statement; the result s obvous and the cause need not be dwell largely upon. Ths puts Ihe physcal work on a sound bass and ncreases ts effcency and value.
