The play wll be Antgone by Sopho- «les. Several scenes wll be presented wth a do/.cn man characters and a chorus of Theban elders. The summary of n- play s brefly ths: Polynees, son nnd her to the unfortunate Oedpus, havng been supplanted by hs younger brother Eteocles, brought an army of Arrves aganst hs natve ety, Thebes, The nrny was defeated, and the two brothers slew each other n sngle combat. On ths Creon, the brother-n-law of Oedpus, sueeeedng t" the lupr e power, forbade the bural of Polynees. lnt Antgone, sster of 'le dead, placng the dues of affecton nnd pety before her oblgaton to the magstrate, dsobeyed the edct at the sacrfce of her lfe. Creon carred out hs wll but lost hs sen Etaemon and hs wfe Eurydce, and receved ther curses on hs head. Hs other son. Mogarcus, had prevously been devoted as a vctm to the good of the state. The gvng of such n play as ths enables not only the actors and the members of the elub to apprecate the beauty and strength of Crock drnmn, lnt enables nl the students to get such glmpses of the power of the ancents at dramatsts as to stmulate nterest n Creek. The meetng last tme was postponed as the club took a long nnd nstructve trp to th Deer Hps 'ower staton where Professor Whtehorn explaned th«> s tll features. The meetng was penod by a paper Smallpox" by Myron Townsonl *ls. The speaker took up the subject systematcally and mentoned (he dseases of olden tmes n Chna and durng the Crusade*. He defned the dgcase of smallpox as an acute dsease of man. charactersed by a general erup ton of the skn aol transmtted by drect assocaton, or by bts of crust from the skn eruptons whch enter the body thru the lvng membrane of (he nose, or through a Scratch n the skn. Then the causes were dscussed and the varous t rcs propounded. The methods of Combattng smallpox are better known than (he cause. Varolaton, or allowng a mld attack to render one mmune from a more severe attack was t-st practced. Vaccnaton s now the accepted not hod. \ accnaton from persons s lable to transmt other dfl eases so vaccne from horses mules, goats and now fna'u from calves s used, The speaker closed wn lear explanaton of the method of procurng the vaccne and ts el eel nnd use on the human system. Hester Kneeland '18 then spoke on "Symbolsm of the Alchemst". These old expermenters used very complex sgns n order that ther processes mght be secret. Thus an eagle was a symbol of the volatle p-" and the varous metals had varous pecular sgns for ther presence. Soluton was represented by a lon devourng the sun. moon or, planet. The lon representng the solvent. Hlack was represented by a crow, vhte by a s.\an, rdescence by a peacock, red by a phoenx. The phlosopher's stone arose from the practcal work of the gold smths n makng debased gold or slver or spurous mtatons of them. t conssted merely of a metallc alloy, the slver and gold beng alloyed wth cop per and lead. Presdent W leoek gave a demon strato of hs profcency wth some delcate apparatus. The socety has been consderng socety pns. At ft tng of the executve commttee of the board of trustees, held here last Saturday, t was decded that the tme had - e to go ahead wth the plans (or constructon, and ground wll be broken for the buldng ths fall, f weather condtons wll permt. The acton of the trustees Came as a dstnct surprse to the students, for although a meetng of the commttee ma held on Wednesday, no ntmaton of tha fact had reached the student body, was generally understood that the money for the buldng had been practcally all rased, but no mmedate acton was antcpated. Saturday's meetng was really an adjourned sesson of the meetng of the prevous Wednesday, at whch t had been found mpossble to reach any defnte decson. At Saturday's sesson, however, t «as agreed that everythng should be! n n readness durng the fall and wnter, n order that the constructon mght be completed as quckly as possble, after the comng of sutable weather n the sprng. The new buldng wll occupy the vac ant corner of Gampua Avenue and Bardwell street, and wll be the begnnng of the second quadrangle. The style of ths buldng wll be coped n all of those whch follow t on ths pan of the campus. t was orgnally planned to buld a new Commons n connecton wth the unon buldng, but t was thought advsable at ths tme to use the avalable money to buld and completely equp the Unon proper. The *90, whch has been subscrbed wll be ample for ths purpose. The Unon wll face Campus Avenue. Eventually, the Com nons wll be bull as an annex, wth ts long axs parallel to lardwell Street. so that tl ntn- buldng wll take the form of the lette "L", Archtecturally, the Unon wll be of the Englsh style. Bomewhal resemblng the chapel. The materal, however wll be dark brck, rather than Btono. On the frst floor of the buldng wll be a huge hallway whch wll be drect lv eon ted wth the large loungng room, so that the two together can be used as an audtorum, seatng about lve hundred persons. A loge freplace wll be an attractve feature of the loungng room. There wll be also two ns for the use of the Athletc Assocaton, one general offce, and a prvate offce for the treasurer of the Aasoea lon. The V. M. 0. A. wll be provded wth the same offce space. A game room, a room for readng and wrtng. a post offce for the college, and ft room whch t s hoped w'll be assgned as Dee for 'he Bates Student, wll fll the remanng -pace of the frst Hour. On the second Boor then' wll be a small hall wl ch Wll seat about one hundred and Bfty persons, Ths wll be used for tc regular weekly meet ngs of the Y. M. C. A., am for occa- sonal lecture- There wll also he a musc room, '. r the use of the glee and mandoln clul. and other muscal organsatons ol the college, wth certan exceptons. n the basen ent there wll be bowlng alleys, pocd and bllard rooms, another loungng roo; wth ts freplace, and, last of all, the college barber shop. The 190,000 whch s to buld and furnsh the new buldng was subscrbed by three frends of the college. (60,000 of that amount has already been pad u. and the rest wll be receved before t s needed for the work. The completon of ths buldng wll mark the successful culmnaton of long effort on the part of Presdent Chase to brng such an nsttuton to Hates. He has long fell that ths was one of the most pressng needs of the college. Kates s ft non-fraternty college, and the 1'non s expected to fll that place n the socal lfe of the men of the nsttuton whch s furnshed n many of the other colleges by the fraterntes. Although t has been the hope of many of the students to see a new gymnasum upon our campus before the tme of ther graduaton, there s lttle doubt that the fnshed Bates Unon wll fnd all the men of Bates apprecatve of the atttude of the trustees n ther decson to defer the buldng of a gymnasum untl some later tme. Andrews Speaks On "The Personal Element" Last evenng's meetng of the Y. M. C. A. was held as usual n the Roger Wllams Hall assembly room. The speaker of the evenng was Mr. Delbert E. Andrews, who took as hs subject, "The Personal Element". le sad tha "Personalty", snce t s such a broad and comprehensve prncple, could not be adequately treated as a whole u short talk, and that he would therefore confne hmself to ono phase of th> matter, namely, "The Contagousness of Personalty". Tha one's personalty s contagous, s a matter of common experence wth all of us. The speaker gave numerous examples from hs own experence, all of whch were strkng proofs of the truth of ths statement. Two of theso examples were drawn from the school days of Mr. Andrews. He told of ono of hs former teachers who had a pecular habt of adjustng hs collar to meet the requrements of a partcularly robust neck. n a few weeks, he notced that half the boys n the school were unconscously mtatng the teacher n ths respect. At another tme, the grls of the school were found nvoluntarly copyng the smle of a partcularly good-tempered woman teacher. n both of thes.- eases, the pupls were strongly attracted by the personalty of the teacher, and ther mtaton was purely unconscous. Upon one occason, when Mr. Andrews a mpaned a delegaton of Student Volunteers to a conference al Toronto, he notced that the Yankee boys began to roll ther t's before they had long been u the Canadan cty, agan unconscous mtaton of the Canadan boys wth whom they were assocatng. The speaker sad that ho realzed that he had brought no really new deas, b merely recalled to the mnds of hs hearers some mportant old deas whh they had perhaps neglected. He expressed the hope that as college men, who must set the standard of pers alty for the rest of the world, they would use these thoughts to enhance 1 the value of ther own examples, and present to the world a personalty tl at s good, noble, and nsprng. Harvard: 4,750 alumn and under gradual's are engaged n war servce. 1,690 are n the Unted stales Army. Harvard s to have an offcers' tral ng corps for Naval Reservsts of the Frst Naval Dstrct. The course of weeks' work wll lead to the commsson of ensgn. Cadets are to bc quartered n lolyoke House, wth admnstratve ollces n Dane Hall. Mchgan: The new mltary tran- ng organzatons show an enrollment of Nght drllng on South Feld s to be made practcable by the use of eght powerful searchlghts.
