2 25 /?" fbe htkut Vol. XLV. Mo. 7 LEWSTON, MANK, TJl'KSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1918 l'km'k TEN CENTS JUNORS AND SOPHS WASHNGTON'S BATTLE TO A TE CELEBRATED A LA OVERTME PEROD FALS TO SETTLE CONTEST s customary, 1919 and 1920 hav played thal annual hockey game. As la also customary, nether Bde s sats Bed wth tln k result. Frday's struggh justfed the predcton tha the game would "' fast and nterestng (row start " fnsh. To be sure the sde seemed to care very much for team work, but a lack of co-ordnaton s ne drawback n a game of ths nature The ce was n the best dton tha las ever been. Many of the contes lants. however, who had not skated be fore tls year, demanded that the man ager sprnkle sand upon the terrtory whch they covered so tha they would be able to mantan ther equlbrum. Manager Stevens mantans tha t s mpossble to satsfy everybody. Practce before the game begat promptly at 3:30, and the spectator* Boughl to entrench themselves n orde to escape tn. flyng pneks. Several co eds who had been brave enough to jon ney to the rnk were unable to stand the nervous stran whch "as bronghl on bj watchng such ferocous practce. The young lades were asssted to a nearby store where treatment was gven them t s beleved by many tha ths pre lmnary work was detrmental to th' effcency of several of the players, fo when the whstle blew for the start ol tn- game, many of the men were re dnng upon one "t' the benches am refused to move. Ther class sprl was appealed to and they staggered nto the rnk, determned to fght as long at hey were able to stand. Acton commenced mmedately afte Referee Thurston gracefully tossed the puck between the centers and then skated for hs lfe. For a tme m ther sde was ade to push the puck nto ( my terrtory, but as the lg!.t progressed, the Junors slowly forcej toward tn 1 Sopho 'e goal. As the) noared the cage, they beheld Charley Stetson gnashng hs teeth am prepar n- to turn back the assault. nlne dately, the 1919 players realzed tha all was lost. Then Trask and Buke started a rush up the lee and wer» stopped only by th arvelous defen sve work of Frank Stone and Hppo Blwell. Hack an. forth the attl surged, frst one sde threatenng, and then the "ther, but all to no aval. The perod ended wthout further scor n-. n the second perod the Sophs resorted to strategy, that strategy fo whch they are unversally noted. They allowed Kendall, Tallot, l.arkn and the other l'ln forwards to penetrate the 1920 defense. Then when t see as though the Junors were bound lo score, two 1919 men fell down. Ths was the crtcal moment for whch th" Sophs had been watng. Hums slpped 'le puck to Trask and tha speed} youth started on a wld dash down the ce, Me reached the enemy's case and somehow shot the puck by Hppo. How Trask succeeded n pushng the pur. by the nvncble 1!>1!J goal tender s a mystery whch has no soluton. Trask unknd act produced a pecular effect upon the Junors. For some nnk noun reason, they resented hs actons an ledately lrokp hs hockey stck so that he would not he able to shoot any more goals. Not satsfed wth that. th. Junors by bull strength and gnorance, carred the ] k to the sophomore cage and shot t n a t the sde. As ths seemed the only manner n whch they could cage the puck, the goal was allowed. Eye wtnesses clam that th? oratorcal ablty of Mr. John Mosher of Belgrade dd much to nfluence the goal umpre n renderng hs decson. For the remander of the perod nether sdo was able to score. Benney Rce worked hard chasng the puck all ove: the ce but somehow he was nover able to catch up wth t. An overtme pe rod of fve mnutes was agreed upon, but the boys were tred and nether goal was serously threatened. NO HOLDAY, BUT PATROTC EXPRESSONS VOCED N CON- JUNCTON WTH REGULAR CHAPEL SERVCE Dsregardng precedents, the authortes at Hales derded to elmnate the holday usually gven to celebrate the annversary of George Washngton's brth, and carred thru the regular Frday rectaton programme, February 22d. Ths departure was the result of the statement made by. the fuel admnstrator, who notfed all New Gngland colleges " lo- ready to dose at any tme, tor the government mght have to confscate ther coal. Tms Hates thot t best to have rectatons whle rectal ons were to be had. Nevertheless, the exercses held last Frday durng Chapel, were te mosl n e-.lng and nstructng held on the occason of the brth of the "Father of hs Country". The servces were opened by the readng of Washngton's "Farewell Address" by Mark Stnson Presdent of the senor Class. Mr. stnson s an orator and reader of no small ablty, and the renderng of ths selecton was not only tltng for the occason, bul proved to l specally adapted to the present tme. Alter the general mport of Washngton's farewell advce was made clear to the lst r- by M. suson's read ng. Or. Brtan pro. led to analze and explan the dfferent ponts n the address, n a manner, and wth a Blear. ess and lucdty of thot. tha con V'nced the audence leyond a doult of hs powers as a lecturer. Dr. Brtan ponted "lt the seven natonal dun gers that Washngton dwelt upon n hs address, and also showed wheren the Amercan pe had followed Wash ngtou's warnngs, am wheren they had faled to follow the course outlned by Washngton, The frst danger, sectonalsm, has been done away wth, -. Brtan stated. The danger of ob dence to law s stll prevalent. The gradual and mpulsve changes n our consttuton, whch Washngton had warned ns aganst, are not too frepent to cause any mmedate anxety.. Dr. Brtan then brot specal emphass to bear on the remanng dangers, whch are e closely related to the present day problems: excessve party feel ng. encroachment of one branch of government upon the other, natonal antpathes, and entanglng allan.es wth foregn natons. The fnal a.lv the four prncples that emboded Washngton's polley as contaned n hs Farewell Address" are: a strong.eatral/.e.l government, strong clams of relgous moralty, educaton, whch to Washngton was synonymous wth progress and prof perty, and prncples of good fath and.justce ll all nternatonal relatons. And ths fnal njuncton, n Dr. Brtan's opnon, s the only method to e-tablsh permanent peace. Dr. Brtan's vgorous analyss was heartly applauded, and after the sngng of the "Star spangled Banner", a short prayer by Dr. Brtan, and the fnal hymn "Amerca", th,. frst lno, or/.o.l patrotc celebraton at Halewas concluded, Trask and Mlker played an oxcollen; offensve game for the Sophomores. They were after the puck all of the tme and dd re than ther share of the work. ('apt. Burns, n spte of a severe llness, was a tower of strength on the defensve. For the Junors, th-' entre forward lne, Kendall, Tnlbot..arkun, and Mosher dd equally Ann work. t mght be stated, however, that Kendall's persstency dd much toward keepng the puck near the Sophomore cage. Stone and Maxm broke up many of the enemy's attacks. Lno Up Junors (1) Sophomores (1) Kendall, c. c> Trask. Tnlbot. r.w. ]. W R e,,. Larkum, l.w. r.w,.undholm Mosher, r. After endurng ths for a whle ear another dale was sought, An alternate Thursday evenng wth the Mltary Scence club worked very well for one semester, though the creek club conflcted occasonally.
