3 THE 1898 SANCTUARY OF THE F[RST BAPT[ST CHURCH THE 1898 SANCTUARY OF THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF MADISON The First Baptist Church f Madisn has a rich histry and its recrders f the past, arc a[ ways appreciative f the pprtunity t tell f this significant heritage. Macednia Church is the place f birlh 0:' the.'viidd[e F[rida Baptist Assciatin. Pine Grve spnsred the rganizatin f Macednia abut the time that the guns f the Civi[ War grew silent. S bth churches are, and will remain, prminently identified with ur assciatin, The First Baptist Church f Madisn, al iirst Knwn as "The Hickstwn Baptist Church," ges back t the days f the pening frntier, Sme authrities hld that this church was iirst rganized suthwest f Madisn in the San Pedr Area. R, j, Mays settled in this area pssibly as early as 183'1. Mr. Mays voled in the 1833 electin as shwn by ld recrds in The Office f the Secretary f State, In the [ate 1830's he and Alexander,'vlseley are shwn as having erected a BapList Church in Madisn, This early building was n Meeting Street as i crners wilh Base, the present site f the '[956 Madisn Church Building. [L was still called "HicKstn Baptist Church, and cntinued La be s called until the early -[850's. [t became the Mad'sn Baptist Church and this being changed in 1922 t the "The First BaptisL Church f MadisCl" Back T The Frntier The FirSL Baptist Church under its varius names, has had an hnred r[c in the beginnings f Our Baptist HeriLage and its maintenance thrugh thc years. [ts leaders helped rganize the Old F[rida Baptist Assciatin in Mr, Mays left The Madisn Church in 1841 and hc[pcd t rganize the Cncrd Baptist Church_ [t was here that the Flrida Baptist Cnventin was rganized in Nvember 1854,,he wrk being cnsummated in the parlr f Cliftn Mansin, hme f Mrs. Mays and their family. The StaLe Bard f Missin was rganized in the 1880's under the care f The Madisn Baptist Church. This fact has been duly marked by a State Histrical Marker, just nrth f the 3

4 church building. Seven times, 1866, '1868, 1871, '1876, 1877, :880, and 1893, this church was hst t the Flrida Baptist Cnventin in its annual sessins. It helped t lay the sure fundatins fr ur effrts in Christ. N w T The 1898 Sanctuary This building, as yu nte, is still standing n the Suthwest Crner f The Church prperty. It was mved there just prir t the building f the 1956 structure, its mving and preservatin being strngly led by the late Mrs. ). A. Zipperer; and Deacn R. B. (Dick) Bryan. It is still beautiful. Plans include its re-cnditining and ttal maintenance. The Reverend Stephen Crckett, an Englishman, was pastr during cnstructin f this beautiful building. The architecture tk a marked turn frm the ld square-crnered building, regnant since the days i the pineers. The 1898 Sanctuary went in fr a hexagnal wall system, a rf f many gables, and beautificatins f every feature. It was truly, a lng distance frm the frntier type f "Meeting Huse." The interir with its clred windws f decrated glass and its Kilgren Organ, is truly a "Thing f Beauty," as Jhn Keats, the English Pet, said. Behind the Kilgren Organ, histry speaks in accents plain. There are fund the ld bellws, the handle fr hand-pumping and the entire system, antedating electrical activatin. The entire Sanctuary speaks f ther days. Here Dr. J. L vvhite was pastr when he was translated in his late 80's. Here the entire church becmes a living mnument t Reverend Stephen Crckett, Gd Witness f Christ and a lver f beauty. We hpe yu will cme by and visit the ld Church at the times yu wrship with us in ur 1966 Sanctuary. It's gd t meditate n ur Baptist Heritage and feel the influence f the great men and wmen f the past and always f ur ever-l:ving Lrd. State Directry Respectfully submitted, E. B. During the summer just ended, practically every week was used by sme church grup. At ther times during the year, s!llaller grups f wrkers and leaders frm the varius churches, make use f the Assembly n weekends. The physical facilities f the Assembly cntinue t be upgraded. The latest additin was a sidewalk. This walk extends in frnt f allthe bu;ldings, ending at the Chapel. Heretfre, during the rainy Seasn, ne had difficulty gelling frm ne building t anther because r the muddy cnditin. There is still much t be dne. The Chapel is very adequately air cnditined, but air cnditining is much needed in the remaining buildings. One-half f ne f the cabir.s, which is used as staff quarters, has a windciw unit. FLORIDA BAPTIST CHILDREN'S HOME REPORT The year has been an exciting year f grwth and achievement at the Flrida Baptist Children's Hme as Gd has blessed in many ways. Even with the shrtness in persnnel the.\iiami campus 8xpanded its prgram'and utreach by pening tw fsler hmes in the Key West area. Our budget fr the year was $566, and the per capita cst i care per child was apprximately $4, Flrida Baptists cntinue LO supprt the Flrida Baptist Children's Hme thrugh Lhe Cperative Prgram and the annual Mther's Day ffering. Sme $261, was cntributed thrugh the Cperative Prgram and mre than $40,000 was raised thrugh the Mther's Day ffering. In view f the fact thal the Cperative Prgram cntributes nly 47% f ur ttal perating budget, and the drastic decline in incme frm endwment due t rhe sad state f the slck market, the Children's Hme will need the whl8-hearted supp0rl f every church in Flrida during the Mther's Day ffering emphasis in May and Lhrugh yur cnstant prayers rhrughut the year. As we mve inl the challenge f the new year, we d s with an awareness f Paul's admnitin ttimthy when he said, "Fr this reasn I remind yu t keep alive ihe girl thai Gd gave t yu when I laid my hands n yu. Fr the Spirit that Gd has given des nt make us timid; insteau l'lis spirit fills us with pwer and lve and sell cntrl." (IITimthy 6, 7). Respectfully submitted, Mrs. Audrey Wd, Chmn. ANNUITY OFFICE "Ye have nt chsen me, but I have chsen yu, and rdained yu, that ye shuld g and bring fnh fruit." (Jhn 15:'16). When a yung persn is called f the Lrd t Ihe ministry, he nt nly puts his life in the hands f Gd, but he puts his life in the hands f the church that has called him t be pastr r a church staff member. A persn whm Gd has called is malching his life and ministry against the cncern and cmpassin f the church that calls him. The livelihd, standard f living, and retirement benefits which a minister has are dependent upn the attitude f the lcal church. Althugh mst f ur Flrida Baptist churches participate in the Suthern Baptist Prtec:Lin Prgram, there are still a few wh need t cme t grips with the necessity f making a retirement incme pssible fr the pastr and church staff members. I n additin t this, because f the cnstantly increased cst f living mst f ur churches need t upgrade their present relirement prgrams. ANNUITY BOARD OF THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION The Suthern Baptist Cnventin Annuity Bard paid ul a recrd nearly $16 millin in retirement and prtectin benefits during "1973. 20 Withut the supprl f the Cperative Prgram, many f the institutins wuld have t clse their drs. They request ur prayers and cntinued financial supprt s that a Christian educatin can be ffered. COOPERATIVE PROGRAM Respectfu[[y submitted, R;chard A. Mi[ey On May 13,1925, the Suthern Baptist Cnventin vted the Cperative Prgram int existence. It has becme the mst effective means f supprting missins ever discvered. As we apprach the 50th Anniversary f the Cperative Prgracn, we are aware that Suthern Baptists are supprting an increasing number f missinaries each year. When the Cperative Prgram was in its infancy, there was a need t educate ur peple t its purpse. It was imprtant t church leaders. Then, interest in educating ur Baptist peple abut the Cperative Prgram began t decline. Supprt f missins thrugh the Cperative Prgram cntinued t grw, but leaders tk fr granted that church members understd the primary features f the plan, and s[wly ur understanding has declined. This need fr understanding requires ur attentin if the next fifty years is t prduce grwth and expansin. It is evident that wrld needs grw mre urgent every day. U nderstanding is the greatest asset we can have in prviding fr missins in the future. Educatin is necessary in three areas: (1) what the Cperative Prgram is, (2) hw the Cperative Prgram functins, and (3) smething abut the peple wh d the wrk. As lng as the peple are knwledgeable in these areas, we can advance. Each church in F[rida will be asked t renew its cmmitment t the Cperative Prgram as The means f supprting wrld missins. The seriusness with which we cmmit urselves nw will determine the seriusness with which we d the jb in the fulure. Each persn is respnsible fr the depth f his wn cmmitment. Respectfu[ly submitted, William D. Bement BROTHERHOOD REPORT Brtherhd enlistment thrughut the Suthern Baptist Cnventin cntinued t climb fr the third cnsecutive year. This was als true in F[rida. FLORIDA BAPTIST WITNESS REPORT Respectfully submitted, Elbert C. Tyner Infrmatin Necessary Because infrmatin is necessary fr intelligent study, actins and cperatin, Baptist sta'te papers are imprtant. This type f media cntinues t fill a strategic place in the life f Suthern Baptists. Althugh each paper is wned and prduced by separate state cnventins, they are a primary surce f unity which enables an autnmus peple t cperate in a spiritual ministry designed t declare and exhibit the gspel t a lst wrld. Cnfidence n the part f Baptists in this ministry f the printed page is evidenced by the fact that the circulatin f the 33 state papers has reached an all-time high 011,734,374. This is made pssible thrugh thse lcal churches wh see the need and right f each member having the pprtunity t be infrmed. Increased Circulatin The Flrida Baptist Witness, ur wn state paper, has grwn in circulatin during the past year. As f August 1,1974, we nw have a circulatin f 75,600, as cmpared t 69,000 last year. One thusand fifty-ne churches (an increase f 40), ut f the 1,501 churches in the state, are nw using ne r the ther f the grup subscriptin plans t send the Witness each week t at I'east a part, if nt all, f the families in their membership. Circulatin t a great degree determines the effectiveness f the Witness. All the wrk, effrt and expense mean lillie if the paper is nt widely distributed. Likewise, readership is als determined by circulatin fr hw shall they read if the paper be nt sent? The mst ecnmic and sensible way t distribute the Witness is t prvide fr every family t receive it thrugh the church budget plan. The paper is mailed t the member's hme. It serves as a weekly reminder f that family's relatinship t the church. Even thse wh d nt allend regularly need the paper as it keeps befre them in a vital way the respnsibilities t Christ and His church. Insight Needed The wise pastr sees the state paper as his assciate in the task f educating his peple in denminatinal activities. The Witness helps the leadership f the church in prmting evan" gelism, stewardship and missins. It als helps t indctrinate and enlist the membership fr service. 28

29 The Witness has varius plans fr helping churches get the paper in the budget. Burnett Certainly The Master had in mind in the Greal Cmmissin that Radi and Televisin wuld be used in the spread f His Gspel. Paul, telling f his utreach in spreading the Gspel, referred t his many different appraches in presentatin, "that by all means sme might be saved." We are n firm grunds in using radi and televisin in carrying n The Great Cmmissin. T give scpe and plan t his wrk, we have set up the Radi and Televisin Cmmissin, similarly t The Cperative Prgram in the area f financing Christ's Prgram t the ends f the earth. Charles G. T all prgrams, there have been -189,024 mail respnses, a cnsiderable increase ver the preceding year. "The Athletes" a new Series, is mving alng encuragingly. What can we in Middle Flrida Baptist Assciatin d t buttress this wrk' 1. We can pray that the prgram be vitally alive in Christ, prgram by prgram, the entire year arund. 2. 30 EVANGELISM REPORT In the year , Flrida Baptists baptized 29,527 in the 1,501 churches, which is the secnd highest baptismal recrd in ur histry. There were 37 churches baptizing ver 100 and 23 churches baptized ne persn fr every fur members. Tw Flrida Baptist churches led the Suthern Baptist Cnventin in baptisms--first Baptist Church, Jacksnville with 636, and Allapattah Baptist Church, Miami with 622. Suthern Baptists tpped the 4,000 baptismal mark in fr the sixth time with 445,- 725 baptisms. In this church year f , ur assciatin is reprting 200 baptisms, which is an increase f 54 frm last year. The Pinetta and Madisn First churches has led us in evangelism with 19 baptisms each. Our churches reprted 217 additins by letter and statement fr a grand ttal f 4-17 additins t the churches f ur assciatin. The evangelism Department f the Flrida Baptist Cnventin has given leadership in develping, training and invlving in persnal witnessing church members thrugh the Lay Evangelism Schl and the REACHOUT strategy fr high schl evangelism has ffered ptential fr discipling Christian yuth in evangelism thrugh the high schl campuses. Especially designed leadership training has prvided the grwing nucleus f equipped Christian leaders fr ministry in evangelism. RESOLUTIONS Respectfully submilted, Lamar Andersn Whereas, the hst churches have exerted every effrt in entertaining this sessin f the Assciatin and whereas, yur cmmittee finds that majr crimes are increasing at an alarming rate in this cuntry, and, whereas we als find that Gd is being left ut f everything in many cases. Therefre, be it reslved, first, that we extend ur sincere appreciatin t the hst churches fr their hspitality, and secnd, that we extend ur full supprt t all thse wh are trying t suppress crime and, third, that we cvenant tgether in a cperative effrt t put Gd first in ur lives and businesses, and that we stp "playing Church," and begin t fllw Gd's leadership, s that we can truthfully say with Jshua f ld, "as fr me and my huse, we will serve the Lrd." 32 Articles f Faith I. The Scriptures We believe that the Hly Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure f heavenly instructin; that is has Gd fr its authr, salvatin fr its end, and truth, withut any mixture f errr, fr its matter; that it reveals the principles by which Gd will judge us; and therefre is, and will remain t the end f the wrld, the true center f Christian unin, and the supreme standard by which all human cnduct, creeds and religius pinins shuld be tried. II. Gd There is ne and nly ne living and true Gd, an intelligent, spiritual, and persnal Being, lhe Creatr, Preserver, and Ruler f the universe, infinite in hliness and all ther perfectins, t whm we we the highest lve, reverence, and bedience. He is revealed t us as Father, Sn, and Hly Spirit, each with distinct persnal attributes, but withut divisin f nature, essence, r being. III. The Fall f Man Man was created by the special act f Gd, as recrded in Genesis. "S Gd created he them" (Gen. 1:27). "And the Lrd Gd frmed man f the dust f the grund, and breathed int his nstrils the breath f live; and man became a living sul" (Gen. 2:7). He was created in a state f hliness under the law f his Maker, but, thrugh the temptatin f Satan, he transgressed the cmmand f Gd and fell frm his riginal hliness and righteusness: whereby his psterity inherit a nature crrupt and in bndage t sin, are under cndemnatin, and as sn as they are capable f mral actin, becme actual transgressrs. IV. The Way f Salvatin The salvatin f sinners is whlly f grace, thrugh the mediatrial ffice f the Sn f Gd, wh by the Hly Spirit was brn f the Virgin Mary and tk upn him ur nature, yet withut sin; hnred the divine law by his persnal bedience and made atnement fr ur sins by his death. Being risen frm the dead, he is nw enthrned in Heaven, and, united in his persn the tenderest sympathies with divine perfectins, he is in every way qualified t be a cmpassinate and all-sufficient Saviur. V. Justificatin Justificatin is Gd's gracius and full acquittal upn principles f righteusness f all sinners wh believe in Christ. This blessing is bestwed, nt in cnsideratin f any wrks f righteusness which we have dne, but thrugh the redemptin that is in and thrugh Jesus Christ. It brings us int a state f mst blessed peace and favr with Gd, and secures every ther needed blessing. VI. The Freeness f Salvatin The blessings f Salvatin are made free t all by the gspel. It is the duty f all t accept them by penitent and bedient faith. Nthing prevents the salvatin f the greatest sinner except his wn vluntary refusal t accept Jesus Christ as teacher, Saviur, and Lrd. VII. Regeneratin Regeneratin r the new birth is a change f heart wrught by the Hly Spirit, whereby we becme partakers f the divine nature and a hly dispsitin is given, leading t the lve and 32

33 practice 01 righteusness. It is a wrk f Gd's free grace cnditined upn faith in Christ and made rnanifest by the fruit which we bring frth t the glry f Gd. VIII. Repentance and Faith We believe repentance and faith are sacred duties, and als inseparable graces, wrught in ur suls by the regenerating Spirit f Gd; hereby being deeply cnvinced f' ur guilt, danger, and helplessness, and f the way f salvatin by Christ, we turn t Gd with unfeigned cntritin, cnfessin, and supplicatin fr mercy; at the same time heartily receiving the Lrd Jesus Christ as ur Prphet, Priest, and King, and relying n him alne as the nly and allsufficient Saviur. IX. Gd's Purpse f Grace Electin is the gracius purpse f Gd, accrding t which he regenerates, sanctifies and saves sinners. I t is perfectly cnsistent with the iree agency f man, and cmprehends all the means in cnnectin with the end. It is a mst glrius display f Gd's svereign gdness, and is infinitely wise, hly, and unchangeable. I t excludes basting and prmtes humility. It encurages the use f means in the highest degree. X. Sanctiiicatin Sanctificatin is Ihe prcess by which the regenerate gradually attain a mral and spiritual perfectin thrugh the presence and pwer f the Hly Spirit dwelling in their hearts. It cntinues thrughut the earthly life, and is accmplished by the use f all the rdinary means f grace, and particularly by the Wrd f Gd. XI. Preservatin All real believer, endure t the end. Their cntinuance in well-ding is the mark which distinguishes them frm mere prfessrs. A special Prvidence cares fr them, and they are kept by the pwer f Gd thrugh faith unt salvatin. XII. A Gspel Church A church f Christ is a cngregatin f baptized believers, assciated by cvenant in the faith and fellwship f the gspel; bserving the rdinances f Christ, gverned by his laws, and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by his wrd, and seeking t extend the gspel t the ends f the earth. I t5 Scriptural fficers are bishps, r elders, and deacns. XIII. Baptism and the Lrd's Supper Christian baptism is the immersin f a believer in water in the name f the Father, the Sn, and the Hly Spirit. The act is a symbl f ur faith in a crucified, buried and risen Saviur. It is a prerequisite t the privileges f a church relatin and t the Lrd's Supper, in which the members f the church, by the use f bread and wine, cmmemrate the dying lve f Christ. XIV. The Lrd's Day The first day f the week is the lrd's day. It is a Christian institutin fr regular bservance. It cmmemrates the resurrectin f Christ frm the dead and shuld be emplyed in exercises f wrship and spiritual devtin, bth public and private, and by refraining frm wrldly amusements, and resting frm secular emplyments, wrks f necessity and mercy nly excepted. 33

34 XV. The Righteus and the Wicked There is a radical and essential difference between the righteus and wicked. Thse nly wh are justified thrugh the name f the Lrd Jesus Christ and sanctified by the Hly Spirit are truly righteus in his sight. Thse wh cntinue in impenitence and unbelief are in his sight wicked and are under cndemnatin. This distinctin between the righteus and wicked hlds in and after death, and will be made manifest at the judgment when final and everlasting awards are made t all men. XVI. The Resurrectin The Scriptures clearly teach that jesus rse frm the dead. l-lis grave was empl ied f its cntents. He appeared t the disciples after his resurrectin in many cnvincing manifestatins. He nw exists in his glrified bdy at Gd's right hand. There will be a resurrectin f the righteus and the wicked. The bdies f the righteus will cnfrm t the glrius spiritual bdy f jesus. XVII. The Return f the Lrd The New Testament teaches in many places the visible and persnal return f jesus t this earth. "This same jesus which is taken up frm yu int heaven, shall s cme in like manner as ye have seen him g int heaven." The time f his cming is nt revealed. "Of that day and hur knweth n ne, n, nt the angels in heaven, but my Father nly" (Matl. 24:36). I t is the duty f all believers t live in readiness fr his cming and by diligence in gd wrks t make manifest t all men the reality and pwer f their hpe in Christ. XVIII. Religius Liberty Gd alne is Lrd f the cnscience, and he has left it free frm the dctrines and cmmandments f men which are cntrary t his Wrd r nt cntained in it. Church and state shuld be separate. The state wes t the church prtectin and full freedm in the pursuit f its spiritual ends. I n prviding fr such freedm n ecclesiastical grup r denminatin shuld be favred by the state mre than thers. Civil gvernment being rdained f Gd, it is the duty f Christians t render lyal bedience theret in all things nt cntrary t the revealed will f Gd. The church shuld nt resrt t the civil pwer t carryn its wrk. The gspel f Christ cntemplates spiritual means alne fr the pursuit f its ends. The state has n right t impse penalties fr religius pinins f any kind. The state has n right t impse taxes fr the supprt f any frm f religin. A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal, and this implies the right f free and unhindered access t Gd n the part f all men, and the right t frm and prpagate pinins in the sphere f religin withut interference by the civil pwer. XIX. Peace and War It is the duty f Christians t seek peace with all men n principles f righteusness. I n accrdance with the spirit and teachings f Christ they shuld d all in their pwer t put an end t war. The true remedy fr the war spirit is the pure gspel f ur Lrd. The supreme need f the wrld is the acceptance f his teachings in all the affairs f men and natins, and the practical applicatin f his law f lve. We urge Christian peple thrughut the wrld t pray fr the reign f the Prince f Peace, and t ppse everything likely t prvke war. XX. Educatin Christianity is the religin f enlightenment and intelligence. In jesus Christ are hidden all the treasures f wisdm and knwledge. All sund learning is therefre a part f ur Christian 34

35 heritage. The new birth pens all human facullies and creates a thirst fr knwledge. An adequate system f schls is necessary t a cmplete spiritual prgram fr Christ's peple. The cause f educatin in the Kingdm f Christ is crdinate with the causes f missins and general benevlence, and shuld receive alng with these the liberal supprt f the churches. XXI. Scial Service Every Christian is under bligatin t seek t make the will f Christ regnant in his wn life and in human sciety; t ppse in the spirit f Christ every frm f greed, selfishness, and vice; lo prvide fr the rphaned, the aged, the helpless, and the sick; t seek t bring industry, gvernment, and sciety as a whle under the sway f the principles f righteusness, truth and brtherly lve; t prmte these ends Christians shuld be ready t wrk with all men f gd will in any gd cause, always being careful t act in the spirit f lve withut cmprmising their lyalty t Christ and his truth. All means and methds used in scial service fr the ameliratin f sciety and the establishment f righteusness amng men must finally depend n the regeneratin f the individual by the saving grace f Gd in Christ Jesus. XXII. C-Operatin Christ's peple shuld, as ccasin requires, rganize such assciatins and cnventins as may best secure c-peratin fr the great bject f the Kingdm f Gd. Such rganizatins have n authrity ver each ther r ver the churches. They are vluntary and advisry bdies designed t elicil, cmbine, and direct the energies f ur peple in the mst effective manner. Individual members f New Testament churches shuld c-perate with each ther, and the churches themselves shuld c-perate with each ther in carrying frward the missinary, educatinal and benevlent prgram fr the extensin f Christ's Kingdm. Chrislian unity in the New Testament sense is spiritual harmny and vluntary c-peratin fr cmmn ends by varius grups f Christ's peple. It is permissable and desirable as between the varius Christian denminatins, when the end t be attained is ilself justified, and when such c-peratin invlves n vilatin f cnscience r cmprmise f lyalty t Christ and his Wrd as revealed in the New Testament. XXIII. Evangelism and Missins It is the duty f every Christian man and wman, and the duty f every church f Christ t seek t extend the gspel t the ends f the earth. The new birth f man's spirit by Gd's Hly Spirit means the birth f lve fr thers. Missinary effrt n the part f all rests thus upn a spiritual necessity f the regenerate life. It is als expressly and repeatedly cmmanded in the teachings f Christ. It is the duty f every child f Gd t seek cnstantly t win the lst t Christ by persnal effrt and by all ther methds sanctined by the gspel f ChriSl. XXIV. Stewardship Gd is the surce f all blessings, tempral and spiritual; all that we have and are we we t him. We have a spiritual debtrship t the whle wrld, a hly trusteeship in the gspel, and a binding stewardship in ur pssessins. We are therefre under bligatin t serve him with ur time, lalents and material pssessins; and shuld recgnize all these as entrusted t us fr the glry f Gd and helping thers. Christians shuld cheerfully, regularly, systematically, prprtinately, and liberally cntribute f their means t advancing the Redeemer's cause n earth. XXV. The Kingdm The Kindgm f Gd is the reign f Gd in the heart and life f the individual in every human relatinship, and in every frm and instilutin f rganized human sciety.
