On January 25, 1983 Cherry Lake First Baptist Church hsted a Pastr-Directr Meeting which was attended by 28 peple representing twelve churches in this Assciatin. At this meeting we set a net enrllment increase gal f 5% fr this church year and expressed the hpe that in the Church Year this culd increase t 10% and in t 15%. Our Assciatin Vacatin Bible Schl Team, under 34

41 the able leadership f Dr. Mark McCy, attended the V.B.S. Clinic at Blue Springs n March 8 &: 9. They returned with ample material and the skill necessary t lead ur wrkers in the Assciatinal V.B.S. Clinic at Madisn First Baptist Church n March 29. Tw churches, Madisn First and May, rganized three new Sunday Schl Units and received Certificates in recgnitin f their accmplishments. Tw ther churches requested and received assistance in their utreach effrts. There was a real sense f the Hly Spirit wrking in every activity f camp. Thse wh had the respnsibility f teaching, Brthers Hward Mney, Lamar Andersn, Jay Hllwell, Rick Kelle, Wally Weaver and Mrs. Linda Demtt just did an utstanding jb f tuching the hearts f these yung peple. The Music grup this year nt nly learned sme new sngs, but als were taught hw t lead music using 35

42 the hand t direct cngregatinal singing. They perfrmed fr us n family night and did a great jb. Use them in yur church. This year we changed the family night prgram. Previusly, parents stayed with us fr bth talent night and the mvie and usually left the camp t g hme arund 10:30-11:00 which meant sme arrived hme arund 1:00 in the mrning. This year we asked them t stay with us nly thrugh the hur that talent time usually lasted. This way they were n their way hme by 9:00. I interviewed mst f them befre they left and everyne was nt nly in favr f the new prgram but very appreciative f getting hme earlier. The kitchen was headed up by Mrs. Mary Jarvis. She had a gd grup f helpers which included, Mr. & Mrs. V. A. Gentn, Mr. Harry McRae, Mr. Dil Burnett, and Mrs. Dt Buckhalt. Every meal was delicius. Mrs. Sarah McCy was ur camp nurse again. We hnred Mr. & Mrs. Albert & Gertrude Gentry this year because f their many years f service. They were nt able t be with us because f health prblems but they did cme dwn Thursday night t wrk and wrshiped with us. The mvies this year were "Stranger In My Frrest",!!Whitcmb's War", "High Pint!!, and "Brther Enemy." Brther Dennis Draper was ur Camp Pastr. He and his wife, Malrie, were Drm Cunselrs. We appreciate husbands and wives cming tgether t serve. We als were thankful fr laymen and laywmen wh planned their vacatin time t cme and help. They were Mr. Jimmy Burnett and Mrs. Jean Willis. Rev. Tm Kelley came t be with us as Assciate Directr and Canteen Directr t take Rev. Jhn Drman's place because Jhn accepted the call t anther church in Taylr Assciatin. We will miss Jhn very much. The participant was Marilyn W8.11<er, frm Greenville Baptist Church, participating in the Children's Drill. The 1984 Assciatinal Drills and Turnaments will be held n March 12 at Midway Baptist Church at 7:30 P.M. 6. In the first 9 mnths f , 1,068 churches in Flrida requested 53,678 awards in the Church Study Curse Prgram. Again this year, three special awards will be presented frm the state Church Training Department at "M" Night. These will g t the church(es) with (1) the largest ttal number f awards, (2) the largest number f awards in Church Training Leadership, and (3) the largest percentage f ttal awards cmpared t resident church membership. Gifts and wills have helped make it pssible t set up funds with the Flrida Baptist Fundatin that will prduce usable incme in the 1984 budget year. At present, there are 68 residents f which 56 are wmen and 12 are men. The average resident census varies during the year frm 68 t 74. The age range is frm 66 years t 98 years. There are 19 Flrida Baptist Assciatins represented at the Center. The Center facilities, lcated in Ver Beach n 23 acres f prperty, include 14 duplex apartments, 5 efficiency apartments, 23 single bedrm units, and a 24-bed skilled nursing facility. There is a small lake, a picnic pavilin, and 10 acres f citrus trees. The Center has a maximum capacity f 85 residents. Lcated next t the Ritirement Center is the River Memrial Hspital, plus several medical Having these facilities nearby enhances the f the Center. Indian grups. lcatin Shpping areas and churches are within 5-minutes driving distance f the Center. Transprtatin fr shpping is prvided by vlunteers frm lcal church grups, and the nearby churches prvide transprtatin t and frm their individual activities and wrship services. I have received a blessing frm thse wh have supprted and prayed fr me during my first term as president. The Rally wuld nt have been successful withut the ther fficers' supprt. These fficers are Vice-President, Gergia Reams, Secretary/Treasurer, Gena S tkes, Music Directr, Brenda Miller; Pianist Chrissy Grantham; Pastr Advisr, Rev. With infrmative news sectins such as, They Say, The Editr's Page, the Church Page and Flrida Features, ur churches are kept well infrmed as well as given an pprtunity t share thrugh this media what is happening in their church. Baptist Witness is ffered t us Baptists thrugh s many plans. A newly cnstituted church can get a cpy free fr every family fr the first year f its church life. Then, there is the grup prgrams (5 r mre), the church budget family prgram. With its many fine rates, the Witness can cme int yur hme as lw as.08 cents per cpy. 51 FOREIGN AND HOME MISSIONS It is encuraging t nte that the Freign Missin Bard's annual reprt t the Suthern Baptist Cnventin shws a grwing respnse in mst areas f missin endeavr. Hwever, as missinaries send requests fr mre persnnel and funds and dcument them t shw what can be accmplished as these becme available, it is clear that Bld Missin Thrust levels f respnse are nt bld enugh. In 1982 Suthern Baptists brke previus recrds as 406 new missinaries were appinted. This 2.58 percent increase falls shrt f the three percent needed t reach the gal f 5,000 missinaries by AD As 1983 began, 3,217 missionaries were serving in 96 cuntries, aided during the year by nearly 6,000 vlunteers frm Suthern Baptist churches wh went t help verseas - largely at their wn expense. Grwing numbers f baptisms and new church starts were reprted, especially in Africa and Suth America, due in part t a strnger emphasis being placed n evangelism. Overall, 700 new churches were started, an average f 13 per week, 12,710. Last year, Suthern Baptist channeled millin thrugh the Freign Missin Bard t the gspel abrad. This figure culd read ver during 1983, fr a ttal f $110.2 spread $587.6 millin if all Suthern Baptist tithed their incme and present percentages f distributin were maintained. HOME MISSIONS: The Hme Missin Bard has accepted the Bld Missin Thrust challenge f reaching this cuntry fr Jesus Christ. But t make Bld Missin Thrust a reality instead f a slgan, all Suthern Baptist are called t share in this endeavr. One agency, r ne bard alne, cannt witness t 250 millin Americans. The wrk f the Missin Sectin, H.M.B., last year was highlighted by beginning 1,180 new missions and churches. Very ntewrthy, als, was the wrk being 45

52 dne with 81 ethnic grups in 76 languages, starting 345 new ministries. The Hme Missins frce includes 3,430 men and wmen serving in all 50 states, American Sama, Puert Ric, the American Virgin Islands, and Canada. In additin, 40,226 vlunteers were placed in areas f special service and 1,568 chaplains in the military, industry, hspitals and institutins were endrsed. Accrding t H.M.B. President, William G. Abernathy, was in Tallahassee during the entire legislative sessin, lbbying fr mral issues and against bad legislatin which wuld add t ur prblems. We did nt accmplish raising the drinking age t 21 this year. The alchl lbby is s strng ur legislatrs need t hear the lud vice f the Christian vters in supprt f raising the drinking age. Cntrary t what sme may think, yur letters and yur telephne calls t yur representatives and yur senatrs d help. United Christian Actin has aided churches and assciatins acrss Flrida t becme mre aware f the drug and alchl prblem by cnducting seminars, speaking t yuth grups and in church services. 54 MUSIC Thrugh the effrts f many, we have had a very gd year in ur Assciatinal Music Prgram. Twentytw adults and thirty-five f ur yuth received Study Curse Credits this year. Ten yung peple went t the Music Clinic and twenty-five received credit fr a class taught by Linda Demtt at Pickett Lake. Twenty-tw adult leaders went t Music Clinics at Blue Springs and Lake Yale. Our Chir Festival in February went very well. Next year, we have scheduled the Festival n February 4th at Madisn First. Children's Chirs will begin at 6 P.M. with Yuth and Adults t fllw. 67 HISTORY OF MIDWAY BAPTIST CHURCH Lee, Flrida The Midway Baptist Church was rganized in 1856 six miles suth-west f Lee, Flrida. Frm the available recrds, the church was active fr ten years, but became inactive fr the next seven years. The church met Octber 18, 1873, and rerganized with the fllwing members: Jhn Dixn, Daniel Hicks, Timthy Petersn, T. Turner, M. J. Dixn, William A. Brwn, Vicey Dixn, Elizabeth Hicks, Catherine Petersn, Piety Petersn, Martha Turner, Nancy Dixn, Lydia Brwn, Luise Pinkard, Eliza Sullivan, Mary Williamsn, Martha Jhnsn, Elrnina Hicks, Melvian Peek, and Nancy Brwn. Since the church has met mnthly fr cnference which was held n Saturday befre the secnd Sunday in each mnth until 1948 when the church went full-time, and the Cnference date was changed t the first Wednesday night in each mnth. Frm 1945 until 1948 the church held wrship services secnd Sunday and Saturday befre and furth Sunday in each mnth. Thrugh all its histry the church has manifested an interest in missins by making regular 61

68 cntributins t missins at hme and abrad. The first building was made f hewn lgs and was used until abut the turn f the century when a large frame lumber building was built. As the peple prspered, the building was remdeled. In 1947, fur Sunday Schl rms were added t the building. In the summer f 1950, a mdern seven-rm pastrium was cmpleted. In 1954 the present brick building was cnstructed, cnsisting f an auditrium, seven Sunday Schl rms, a baptistry, tw rest rms, and ne scial rm. In 1970, a large fellwship hall was added nt the building. In the fall f 1980, a 63 by 30 ft brick veneer pastrium was cmpleted. Frm 1873 t the present time, the church has had thirty-tw pastrs. Sme have served tw r mre times. Twenty-seven deacns have served the church during its histry. At the present time, there are three active deacns: Eddie Hale (Chairman), E. E. Phillips, and Gus Phillips. The first SUNDAY SCHOOL was rganized in 1924 with D. E. Thmas as Superintendent. Sunday Schl was cnducted at the Enterprise Schl huse fr many years with the exceptin f secnd Sunday at church. The first WOMAN'S MISSIONARY UNION was rganized in June 1940, and has been active in gd wrks since. The Training Unin was rganized in September 1948 with Cecil Hicks as Directr. The Brtherhd was rganized in 1950 with Sidney Jrdan as president. The Brtherhd was rerganized in February The fllwing histrical tidbits are but a few f the interesting incidents which have ccurred thrugh the years. On Octber 14, 1874, the church, in cnf erence, declared ft-washing nt an rdinance f the Missinary Baptist Church. On Nvember 17, 1877, Brther J. J. Frier made a mve and Brther H. J. Lamb secnded it that each male member thrw five r ten cents int the treasury quarterly. In August 1917, a dnatin was taken t help visiting preachers wh had cnducted a revival.
