All slicite ur cntinued supprt in the future. Respectfully submitted, Richard A. Miley CHRISTIAN LITERATURE/OR THE FLORIDA BAPTIST WITNESS Because infrmatin is necessary fr intelligent study, actins and cperatin, Baptist state papers are imprtant. This type f media cntinues t fill a strategic place in the life f Suthern Baptists, Althugh each paper is wned and prduced by separate state cnventins, they are a primary surce f unity which enables an autnmus peple t cperate, in a spirituall11inistry desigrjed t declare and exhibit the gspel t a lst wrld. Cnfidence n the part f Baptists in this ministry f the printed page is evidenced 26

27 by the fact that the circulatin f the 33 state pars has reached an all-time high f 1,65,87. This is made pssible thrugh thse lcal chw'ches wh see the need and right f each member having the pprtunity t be infrmed. The FWRlDA BAPTIST WITNESS, ur wn state paper, as f August 1, enjys a circulatin f apprximately 64,. Nine hundred seventy-tw chmches, ut f the 1,481 churches in the state, are nw using ne r the ther f the grup subscriptin plans t send the WITNESS each week t at least a part, if nt all, f the families in their membership. Circulatin t a great degree determines the effectiveness f the WITNESS. All the wrk, effrt and expense mean little if the paper is nt widely distributed. The mst ecnmic and sensible Wa\: t distribute the WITNESS is t prvide fr every family t receive it thrugh the chch budget plan. The paper is mailed t the members's hme. It serves as a weekly reminder f that family's relatinship t the church. The wise pastr sees the state paper as his assciate in the task f educating his peple in denminatinal activities. The WITNESS helps the leadership f the church in prmting eyange1ism, stewardship and missins. It als helps t indctrinate and enlist the membership fr service. I have been reading the Baptist Witness fr ver 5 years, and it is better than ever. I urge every pastr and Baptist inthis.1, ssciatin t read it. Put it in yur church Budget. Respectfully submitted, Carl W. Burnett COOPERATIVE PROGRAM REPORT The stewardship f ur churches and their cncern fr the lst f the wrld is reflected in the cperative giving t the cperative prgram. Ten years ag Flrida Baptist chuches gave an average f 9% f their incme thrugh the cperative prgram. Last year the average drpped t 8.4/'1 111is is nt gd since everything else is n the rise. We must nt let the rising cst f things cancel alit ur cperative giving. We must as Suthern Baptist begin again t cnsider the imprtance f wrld missins and ur duty t supprt this great need. We, in America have mre than at any ther time, surely we must still hnr Gd with ur substance and the first fruits f ur increase. s that ur barns will cntinue t be filled With plemy, and ur presses burst alit with new wine. But we must nt let ur prsperity crisis cause us t lse sight f ur respnsibility. It is encuraging t nte that the beginning f this church year w churches are ahead f last year's giving t the cpeative prgram. This indicated that Flrida Baptist are already seeing the urgency and ding smething abut it, Gd has revealed t us the great need f the wrld t be saved befre it is t late: let US be assured that He will prvide the necessary means t get the jb dne if we dn't g t sleep, r let ur sin f cmplacency blind ur eyes. let us NOT give till it hurts; but give till it dn't hurt. 27 Respectfully submitted, Ray Kennedy

One f the highlights f this past year was the Flrida Baptist Student Cnventin held at Lake Yale near Leesburg, Flrida. Althugh Nrth Flrida is small it was well represented and thse wh attended received a great spiritual blessing. The cming year we plan t participate in the Eclgy Day Drive at the Cllege and t nce again participate imhe Hmecming activities at the COllege. Articles f Faith L The Scriptures Respectfully submitted, Wesley lliwning, Ch111n. We believe that the Hly Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure f heavenly instructin; that it has Gd fr its authr, salvatin fr its end, and truth, withut any mixture f errr, fr its matter; that it reveals the principles by which Gd will judge us; and therefre is, and will remain t the end f the wrld, the true center f Christian unin, and the supreme standard by which all human cnduct, creeds and religius pinins shuld be tried, II. Gd There is ne and nly ne living and true Gd, an intelligent, spiritual, and persnal Being, the Creatr, Preserver, and Ruler f the universe, infinite in hliness and all ther perfectins, t whm we we the highest lve, reverence, and bedience. He is revealed t us as Father, Sn, and Hly Spirit, each with distinct persnal attributes, but withut divisin f nature, essence, r being. III. The Fall f Man Man was created by the special act f Gd, as recrded in Genesis. "S Gd created hethe.m" (en.1:2). "And the LrcJ Gd frmed man f the dust f the grund, and breathed mt his nstnls the breath f life; and man became a living sul" (Gen. 2:7). He was created in a state f hliness under the law f his Maker, but, thrugh the temptatln f Satan, he transgressed the cmmand f Gd and fell frm his riginal 33

34 hliness and righteusness: whereby his psterity inherit a nature crrupt and in bndage t sin, are under cndemnatin, and as sn as they al"e capable f mral actin, becme actual transgl"essrs. IV. The Way f Salvatin The salvatin f sinners is whlly f grace. thrugh the mediatrial ffice f the Sn f Gd, wh by the Hly Spirit was brn f the Virgin Mary and tk upn him ur nature, yet withut sin; hnred the divine law by his persnal bedience and made atnewent fr ur sins by his death. Being risen frm the dead, he is nw enthrned in Heaven, and, united in his persn the tenderest sympathies wi.th divine perfectins, he is in every way qualified t be a cmpassinate and all-sufficient Saviur. V. Justificatin Justificatin is Gd's gracius and full acquittal upn principles f righteusness f all sinners wh believe in Christ. This blessing is bestwed. nt in cnsideratin f any wrks f righteusness which we have dne, but thrugh the redemptin that is in and thrugh Jesus Christ. It brings us int a state f mst blessed peace and favr with Gd, and secures every ther needed blessing. VL The Freeness f Salvatin The blessings f Salvatin are made free t all by the gspel. It is the duty f all t accept them by penitent and bedient faith. Nthing prevents the salvatin f the greatest sinner except his wn vluntary refusal t accept Jesus Christ as teacher, Saviur, and Lrd. VII. Regeneratin Regeneratin 1" the new birth is a change f heart wrught by the Hly Spirit, whereby we becme partakers fthe divine nature and a hly dispsitin is given, leading t tt1e lve and practice f righteusness. It is a wrk f Gd's free grace cnditined upn faith in Christ and made manifest by the fruit which we bring [rtl1 t the glry f Gd. VIII. Repentance and Faith We believe repentance and faith are sacred duties, and als inseparable graces. wrught in ur suls by the regenerating Spirit f Gd: hereby being deeply cnvinced f ur guilt, danger, and helplessness, and f the way f salvatin by Christ, we turn t Gd with unfeigned cntritin, cnfessin, and supplicatin fr mercy: at the same time heartily receiving the Lrd Jesus Christ as ur Prphet, Priest, and King, and relying n him a lne as the nly and all-sufficient Saviur. IX. Gd's Purpse f Grace Electin is the gracius purpse f Gd, accrding t which he regenerates, sanctifies and saves sinners. It is perfectly cnsistent with the [ne agency f man, and cmprehends all the l11foalls in cnnectin with the end. It is a 111st glrius dis- 34

35 play f Gd's sverdgn gdness, and is infinitely wise, hly, and unchangeable. It excludes basting and prmtes humility. It encurages the use f means in the highest degree. X. sanctificatin Sanctificatin is the prcess by which the regenerate gradua lly attain t mral and spiritual perfectin thrugh the presence and pwerfthe Hly Spirit dwelling in their hearts. It cntinues thrughut the earthly life, and is accmplished by the use f all the rdinary means f grace, and particularly by the Wrd f Gd. XI. Preservatin All real believers endure t the end. Their cntinuance in well-ding is the mark which distinguishes them [rm mere prfessrs. A special Prvidence cares fr them, and they are kept by the pwer f Gd thrugh faith unt salvatin. xn. A Gspel Church A church f Christ is a cngregatin f baptized believers, assciated by cvenant in the faith and fellwship f the gspel; bserving the rdinances f Christ, gverned by his laws, and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by his wrd, and seeking t extend the gspel t the ends f the earth. Its scriptural fficers are bishps, r elders, and deacns. XIII, Baptism and the Lrd's Supper Christian baptism is the immersin f a believer in water in the name f the Father, the Sn, and the Hly Spirit. The act is a symbl f ur faith in a crucified, buried and risen Saviur. It is a prerequisite t the privileges f a church relatin and t the Lrd's Supper, in which the members f the church, by the use f bread and wine, cmmemrate the dying lve f Christ. XIV. The Lrd's Day The first day f the week is the Lrd's day. It is a Christian in.stitutin fr regular bs erv ance. It cmmemrates the resurrectin f Christ frm the dead and shuld be emplyed in exercises f wrship and spiritual devtin, bth public and private, and by refraining frm wrldly amusements, and resting frm secular emplyments, wrks f necessity and mercy nly excepted. XV. The Righteus and the Wicked There is a radical and essential difference between the righteus and wicked. Thse nly wh are justified thrugh thenamef the Lrd Jesus Christ and sanctified by the Hly Spirit are truly righteus in his Sight. Thse wh cntinue in impenitence and unbelief are in his sight wicked and are under cndemnatin. This distinctin between the righteus and wicked hlds in and after death, and will be made manifest at the judgment when final and everlasting awards are made t all men. 35

36 XVI. The Resurrectin The Scriptures clearly teach that Jesus rse frm the dead. His grave was emptied f its cntents. He appeared t the disciples after his resurrectin in many cnvincing manifestatins. He nw exists in his glrified bdy at Gd's right hand. There will be a resurrectin f the righteus and the wicked. The bdies f the righteus will cnfrm t the glrius spiritual bdy f Jesus. XVII. The Return f the Lrd The New Testament teaches in many places the visible and persnal return f Jesus t this earth. "This same Jesus which is taken up frm yu int heaven, shall s cme in like manner as ye have seen him g int [leaven." The time f his cming is nt revealed. "Of that day and hur knweth n ne, n, nt the angels in heaven, but my Father nly" (Matt. 24;36). It is the duty f all believers t live in readiness fr his cming and by diligence in gd wrl{s t make manifest t all men the reality and pwer f their hpe in Christ. XVIII. Religius Liberty Gd alne is Lrd f the cnscience, and he has left it free frm the dctrines and cmmandments f men which are cntrary t his Wrd r nt cntained in it. Church and state shuld be separate. The state wes t the church prtectin and full freedm in the pursuit f its spiritual ends. In prviding fr such freedm n ecclesiastical grup r denminatin shuld be favred by the state mre than thers. Civil gvernment being rdained f Gd, it is the duty f Christians t render lyal bedience theret in all things nt cntrary t the revealed will f Gd. The church shuld nt resrt t the civil pwer t carry n its wrk The gspel f Christ cntemplates spiritual means alne fr the pursuit f its ends. The state has n right t impse penalties fr religius pinins f any kind. The state has n right t impse taxes fr the supprt f any frm f religin. A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal, amj this implies the right f free and unhindered access t Gd n the part f all men, and the right t frm and prpagate pinins in the sphere f religin Withut interference by the civil pwer. XIX. Peace and War It is the duty f Chdstians t seel{ peace with a II men n princ'iples f righteusness. In accrdance with the spirit and teachings f Christ they shuld d all in their pwer t put an end t war. The true remedy frthe war spirit is the pure gspel f ur LOId. The supreme need f the wrld is the acceptance f his teachings in all the affairs f men and natins. and the practical applicatin f his law f lve. We urge Christian peple thrughut the wrld t pray [r the reign f the Prince f Peace, and t ppse everything likely t prvke war. XX. Educatin Christianity is the religin f enlightenment and intelligence. In Jesus Christ are hidden all the treasures f wisdm and knwledge. All sund learning is therefre a part f ur Christian heritage. The new birth pens all human faculties and creates a thirst fr knwledge. An adequate system f schls is necessary t a cmplete 36

37 spiritual prgram fr Christ's peple. The cause f educatin in the Kingdm f Christ is crdinate with the causes f missins and general benevlence, and shuld receive alng with these th liberal supprt f the churches. XXI. Scial Service Every Christian is under bligatin t seek t make the will f Christ regnant in his wn life and in human sciety: t ppse in the spirit f Christ every frm f greed, selfishness, and vice; tprvidefrtherpharxd, the aged, the helpless, and the sick; t seek t bring industry, gvel11ment, and sciety as a whle under the sway f the principle's f righteusness, truth and brtherly lve; t prmte these ends Christians shuld be ready t wrk with all 111en f gd will in any gd cause, always being careful t act in the spirit f lve withut cmprmising their lyalty t Christ and his tmth. A l.lmeans and methds used in scial service fr the amc liratin f sciety and the establishment f righteusness an;ng men must finally depend n the re generatin f the individual by the saving grac:: f Gd in Christ Jesus. XXl1. CO-Operatin Christ's peple shuld, as ccasin requires, rganize such assciatins and cnventins as lllay best SiCcure c-peratin fr the great bject f the Kingdm f Gd. Such rganizatins have n authrity ver each ther OI ver the churches. They are VOluntary and advisry bdies designed t elicit, cmbine, and direct the energies f ur peple in the mst effective manner. Individual members f New Testament churches shuld c-perate with each ther, and the churches themselves shuld cperate with each ther in carrying frward the missinary, educatinal and benevlent prgram fr the extensin f Christ's Kingdm. Christian unity in the New Testament sense is spiritual harmny and vluntary c-peratin fr cmmn ends by varius grups f Christ's peple. It is permissable and desirable as between the varius Christian denminatins, when the endt be attained is itself justified, and when such c- peratin invlves n vilatin f cnscience r cmprmise f lyalty t Christ and his Wrd as revealed in the New Testament. XXIII. Evangelism and Missins It is the duty f every Christian man and wman, and the duty f every church f Christ t see!, t extend the gspel t the ends f the earth. The new birth f man's spirit by Gd's Hly Spirit means the birth f lve fr thers. MiSSinary effrt n the part f all rests thus upn a spiritual necessity f the regener'!;te life. It is als expressly and repeatedly cmmanded in the teachings f Christ. It is the duty f every child f Gd t seek cnstantly tgl win the lst t Christ by persnal effrt and by all ther methds sanctined by the gspel f Christ. XXIV. Stewardship Gd is the surce f all blessings, tempral and spiritual; all that we have and are we we t him. We have a spiritual debtrship t the whle wrld, a hly tmsteeship in the gspel, and a binding stewardship in ur pssessins. \ve are therefre under bligatin t serve him With ur time talents and material pssess ins; and shuld recgnize all these as entrusted t us fr the glry f Gd and helping thers.
