2 5 th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. Mark Pastoral Council 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Got your attention? Actually, this photo is from the great movie 12 Angry Men (1957) staring Henry Fonda and Jack Klugman. Everyone should see this movie. Everyone should also see and read To Kill a Mockingbird, but I digress. Like Fr. List, I too like movies, but generally old, classic ones. If they are in black and white, all the better! I do want to announce that we have a new pastoral council here at the parish. We had our first meeting last week, and as I sat there I thought of the above seen from the movie, but just in terms of how we were sitting around the table! The council is not 12 angry men, but 7 wonderful and generous parishioners. The council is chaired by Leo Van Hollebeke. Members are: Linn Bartram, Russ Foisy, Bert Golla, Kathy McVickar, Judy Parsons, and Dr. Kent Sullivan. There has not been an active pastoral council here for a number of years, so I thought; looking to the future, now was a good time to form one. The purpose of the pastoral council is to help advise the pastor on a whole range of issues. Of course, our theme at the parish is Making Disciples of Jesus, and these members of the council will help us as we together live that mission in practical and concrete ways. More information will follow in the weeks ahead on the work the pastoral council will undertake. If you see these new council members at Mass or around the parish, please thank them for their willingness to serve in this important way! God s blessing to you all in the week ahead! The Guttmacher Institute, an organization focused on advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights which includes abortion, recently released its findings on U. S. abortion rates from According to the report, the abortion rate has declined to 16.9 abortions per 1,000 women aged in 2011, well below the 1981 peak of 29.3 per 1,000 and the lowest since 1973 (16.3 per 1,000). Why the decline? Lead report author, Rachel Jones, cited better methods of contraception and the recent recession as leading many women and couples to avoid or delay pregnancy and childbearing. On the other side Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee, described the overall drop in abortion numbers as evidence that the anti-abortion movement's lobbying and legislative efforts were having an impact. "It shows that women are rejecting the idea of abortion as the answer to an unexpected pregnancy," she said. The causes for this decline may be debatable, but the fact remains that fewer women are having abortions. We must continue to reach out, pray and help women in crisis pregnancies.
