3 Pastor s Letter: Summer Reading: Be Transformed: The Healing Power of the Sacraments Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Summer is a good time to go outside with a good book. My former spiritual director, Fr. Paschal Cheline, OSB, said that we should have three books going at any given time. First, it goes without saying that the Holy Bible should be a continuous read for us. Second, a good novel is essential to keep our imagination alive and to go deeper into the human experience of life. And third, we should be guided closer to the Lord with ongoing spiritual reading. I have many recommendations for novels, but right now I want to propose a great spiritual book by Dr. Bob Schuchts on the transformative power of the seven sacraments. Dr. Schuchts was at Saint Mark two summers ago for a Healing the Whole Person Retreat, which is coming once again to our area in August this time at Saint Michael Parish in Olympia (see reverse side of this letter). You might want to attend and get an autograph. Why? Because this is the best book on the sacraments that I have read! Dr. Schuchts states: Transformation is an essential part of our Christian lives. To grow spiritually, each one of us must undergo a radical process of dying and rising. How true that is! That process of dying and rising is the Paschal Mystery of Christ, present in each of the sacraments, every time they are celebrated. We are called to imitate the One we follow...as Christ died and rose to glory, so we too follow Him. The transformation that results, if we are open to it, and if we receive it, is without limit. And this transformation, this free gift of God s grace, flows to us in the sacraments. In encourage you to take the time to savor this new book for spiritual reading this summer in between the sacred scriptures and your novel of choice! Blessings to you all! Fr David Mulholland
4 Healing the Whole Person Retreat with Dr. Bob Schuchts Saint Michael Parish - Olympia August 17-19, 2017 Conferences include topics on: Introduction to Healing the Whole Person: God addresses us as His beloved sons and daughters. Facing our Brokenness: How our sins and the sins of others have consequences that affect our lives. Praying for Inner Healing: Encountering the healing power of Christ through prayer and sacraments. Living in Freedom: To be fully alive in Christ! Teachings are augmented by private activities for personal application and healing, including journaling, prayer ministry, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and Holy Mass. Saint Michael Parish th Ave SE Olympia, WA The Retreat will take place on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. (check in/registration from 5:30-6:00 p.m.), Friday from 6:45 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. 4:00pm. Refreshments included on Friday/ Saturday and lunch is included on Saturday. Registration is $155 per person. Registration closes on August 3, Somewhere deep inside each of us is a burning desire to finally become the person God created us to be. Yearning to be fully alive, we long to give ourselves as a gift wholeheartedly back to God. Yet despite these stirrings, many of us hesitate and resist, fearing the very thing we desire. While we long to be made pure and whole, we avoid God s process of purification and healing. -Bob Schuchts, PhD, author of the books Be Healed and Be Transformed Register online at: For more information, please visit:

8 PLANNING STUDY REPORT SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS Overall support for an archdiocesan campaign is strong throughout all constituencies, especially to fund priest pension and health plans and to support women religious. Opinions vary widely on how to structure the parish needs component. Many respondents expressed a desire to see this campaign as part of a larger archdiocesan strategic vision. While support to address the priest pension and health plans is strong, many respondents were surprised by the size of the need. Many donors will require more detailed information about each of the goals before committing to a gift. The majority of respondents desire a campaign that is narrowly focused and easily understood. There is no common interest in additional campaign goals. RECOMMENDED NEXT STEPS Build upon the positive results of the study by immediately moving forward with the preparation phase of a campaign. The finalized campaign goals should be anchored by and flow from the Archbishop Sartain s pastoral vision for the archdiocese and planning study results. Establish diverse and talented campaign leadership committees comprised of priests and laity from across the archdiocese. Establish a women religious committee to determine how campaign funds will be distributed for individual orders based on their needs. Include a parish component as part of the campaign case. Gather and provide exhaustive details on each of the finalized campaign goals. Execute a communication plan that addresses the most frequently asked questions from the planning study. Give parishes the ability to conduct approved combined campaigns if they have their own significant needs. It is an exciting time to be a Catholic in Western Washington as we move ahead with an archdiocesan-wide campaign. This major fundraising effort will help us make significant investments in our priests, our women religious, our parishes and, ultimately, our faith. Look for more information in the coming months regarding campaign leadership and goal details.

All parishioners were invited to provide their opinions and level of support for specific needs affecting the archdiocese s long-term strategic vision. The planning study tested strengthening the pension and medical plans for archdiocesan priests, providing retirement support to women religious communities serving in the archdiocese, and a component for parishes to raise funds for their specific, local needs. The results of the study can be found in this week s bulletin and on the archdiocese s webpage at Thank you to all who participated in this landmark study for the future of the Archdiocese of Seattle.
