3 PASTOR S LETTER: Corpus Christi Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Eucharist as Transformation in the Heart of the Church This week we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord, or what is traditionally called Corpus Christi..the Body of Christ. The Eucharist is the body of Christ; the body, blood, soul, and divinity of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Under the appearance of mere bread and wine, are these hidden realities that are plainly seen with the eyes of one s faith. The Eucharist is described by the Second Vatican Council as the source and summit of our faith. And that s big! But it can also be described as the heart of our faith. It s that intimate! The above picture is the logo of the John Paul II Healing Center. As you know, I have done retreat ministry with them for about for years now. The image stands for the core mission of their ministry: Transformation in the Heart of the Church. The work they do with priests, religious, and laity at uncovering our brokenness and seeking the Lord s renewal and healing truly is, at the level of the heart, transformative. And as people are transformed, so is the Church in the process. At the core of the John Paul II Healing Center is a love for and a promotion of the Eucharist. For the Eucharist is a Sacrament of Healing. And as more people come to love and appreciate the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, lives are being changed and transformed. And that is precisely why Jesus choose to remain close to us, down through the generations, in this very close and intimate way; hidden in a tiny host and a drop of precious blood. How amazing and how awesome! As we celebrate the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, I encourage you to draw close to His Eucharistic presence, for the first time or for the thousandth time, and open your heart fully to receive the transformation He desires to give you! Your cup of blessing will overflow. And you help to transform the Church in your own time and place. Blessings for the week ahead, Fr David Mulholland
4 PASTOR S LETTER, page 2: Sister Parish Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish, Quincy, Florida Sister Parish Project Completion Over the past few years, Saint Mark Parish has had the opportunity to assist a parish in need in the panhandle of north Florida. Many of you will recall when the pastor of Saint Thomas the Apostle in Quincy, Florida, Fr. Mike Sommers, and I did a pulpit exchange. For me, it was an opportunity to experience not only high 90 s but 100% humidity at the same time. Talk about joy! But it was a joyful time for me to minister briefly to Fr. Sommer s mostly Hispanic, migrant worker parish. When he visited here, he told you about their ambiguous plans to develop the parish campus with a ministry pavilion, classrooms, and a new paved parking area. Thanks to your very generous contributions over the years, loans, the help of many other parishes, and mission grants, the project has come to completion. In the photo above, on the far left, is the brand new ministry pavilion that is used each Sunday and throughout the week. In the center is the old rectory, which is now used as offices; the old office building having been converted to classrooms. You will notice the parking area is completely paved; eliminating the gravel, dirt, and grass lots that were seemingly always wet due to Florida s daily rainfall. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners, the parish at a low cost purchased a rectory down the street that houses Fr. Sommers and a parochial vicar from father s order, the Divine Work Missionaries. In short, Saint Thomas Parish is thriving! And it is in large part due to your commitment to extend the love, care, prayers, and generosity of our parish to a parish far away. We truly are a universal Church. May God bless you for your response! Blessings in Christ the Lord, Fr David Mulholland

Cardinal Newman PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. - Matthew 28:19-20 PARISH VISION STATEMENT They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles;they ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. - Acts 2:42 AS A PARISH, WE WILL FULFILL THE MISSION AND LIVE THE VISION BY... Becoming a worshiping people who give praise and glory to God by keeping the Lord s day Holy, by celebrating Holy Mass on Sunday, and by encountering the Lord Jesus in the sacramental life and daily prayer. Becoming a missionary people who live our Catholic faith on a daily basis in witness of the Lord Jesus to the world; to our family, our neighbors, our friends, and our co-workers. In this way Jesus is known by the fruit of our lives and in our love for others; this is at the heart of evangelization and catechesis. Becoming a merciful people who put our faith into action by practicing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy: The Spiritual Works of Mercy: instructing, advising, consoling, and comforting The Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead

7 Farewell Receptions for Fr. Mulholland will be held in Sullivan Hall, after all Masses, the weekend of June 16 th & 17 th as these will be his last weekend Masses at Saint Mark Parish. Parishioners are encouraged to write a letter or give a card to Fr. Mulholland expressing their thanks and gratitude for him as their pastor. Fr. Mulholland specifically has asked for no physical gifts or gift cards. If parishioners wish to give Father a monetary gift, please direct it to him personally. He intends to deposit any such gifts into his retirement account. Fr. Joseph Mitchell has been assigned to join Saint Mark Parish as Priest Administrator beginning July 5 th. He is currently pastor at St. Cecilia Parish on Bainbridge Island. Here is a link to the official pastoral announcement: Transition Team Meetings When one pastor leaves and another comes to a parish, it is important that there is smooth transition. For this purpose, a Transition Team has been formed by Fr. Mulholland with Todd Chapman as the parish staff contact person, along with the assistance of the Office of Discipleship in the Chancery. This bulletin announcement is to inform the parish of what is happening, what the goals and purposes of the team are and other pertinent information. Here are some commonly asked questions about transitions: What is a transition team? The transition team is typically a group of 10 to 12 parishioners from various groups, councils, staff and other organizations that are representative of the different ages, backgrounds and involvement of the parish. Our first transition meeting was held on May 31 st. In our next bulletin we will publish the names of our transition team members as this list was not finalized when this bulletin went to print. What are the responsibilities of the team? Ensure regular communication with the parish during the transition process, including the consultative groups, staff and parish at large. Serve as a resource to the Pastoral Council and parish leaders by monitoring stages of transition and recommending strategies and resources for appropriate responses. Assist the community in their awareness of God s presence during this time of transition. Assist the parish in understanding that transition is a process with many feelings and responses differing for every individual and group. Transition involves openness to change while valuing the cherished memories of the past. Assist the parish in planning the farewell activities and saying goodbye to Fr. Mulholland. Assist the parish in planning the welcoming activities and meeting the new pastor, Fr. Mitchell. Assist Fr. Mitchell during the first few months by helping to provide ways and resources for getting him acquainted with the parish, people, programs and processes.
