Tho yacht Kahul u Hawa arrved n last Frday evenng, and rean n port tll Sunday ornng, when she saled for Honolulu, on her return fro her wnnng race to Hlo wth tho Lurlno. Captan Crozer was qute elated over hs wn. as ho beat the n her own knd of weather, lght wnds. By dousng her lghts just at tho last hour and usng all hs knowledge of salng a yacht to best advantage Capt. Crozer brought tho yacht Hawa across tho lne ten nutes ahead of tho Lurlno whch was n coand of Captan Lew Harrs. After the boys went on shore Captan Harrs claed the wn, statng that he had got to Hlo two hours ahead of the Hawa but the fgures taken by Captan Cplcord and two quarterasters fro the brdge of the steaer Coluban, whch was lyng at anchor n the bay show that the Hawa crossed over at 2 : 4 a.. and that the Lurlno followed sut ten nutes laer. The yachts ade an extra long passage of t as thoy left Honolulu at three oclock Saturday afternoon and dd not arrve n Hlo untl Tuesday ornng. Crozer gave a splendd exhbton of salng and copletely outclassed Harrs. The yachts had an ordnary salng breeze untl Monday ornng and then they ran nto very lght wnds. Strkng the Haakua coast Harrs brought the Lurlno n close expectng Hawa to follow h. nstead of ths, however, Crozer kept well out nto the Channel and whle those on tho thought they were leavng the Hawa away behnd she was n realty holdng her own well. Captan Colcord of the steaer Coluban undertook to keep a look out for the boats and stayed up on the brdge untl they cae n. Ho had two quarterasters wth h so that there should be no doubt as to tho decson beng rght. Shortly after twelve oclock ho sghted the yachts cong out of the gloo and at thrty four nutes past dnght tho Hawa slpped across the lno frng her gun as she dd so. Ten nutes later tho cross, ed tho lne on tho port sde of tho bg Bteaer. Where Crozer beat Harrs was that whle tho latter had kept to tho coast all the way along the forer had szed up the stuaton better. Just at the last oent and when the was lookng for wnd tho Hawa was slppng through the water under stff breezo and salng rght for the lno whle the was tackng about tryng to get across to a wnnng poston There reaned just ono ore tack to ake. Crozer looked at hs chart and saw where a rock was arked about twenty square feet. t was ether a chance of httng ths or of losng the race and ho took tho chance. Tho boat slpped through (Specal Correspondence.) Honolulu July 2, 92. Oahu 8. Mau 7. When the an fro Hlo was asked f he consdered polo good sport he repled quckly : " hae e doots." To ne t s tho swellest knd of a functon; soethng greater, as to fashon, than tho great balls that are gven here durng a season, lack ng only evenng dresses for the lades. Whatever polo ay bo n nda, where beleved t orgnated, there s not here a functon greater than that at whch all Honolulu socety gathered n Moanalua feld last Saturday. Tho players were as ft as tho pones and better pones never pranced a feld. And how they dd go across as the ball hurtled fro one end or ade to the other. Gay jackets and gay costues. Whte aong tho lades predonated but there were those who wore the colors of ther favorte sdes. t was a great sght and a great gae. Personally counted two hundred and ffty eght autoobles and followed the count wth a ental calculaton of tho gato recepts. fgured that each drver pad hs ten dollars for a poston. Fgure that out. Then estated the gatherng, n autos and out, at ffteen hundred and put the recepts for the day ut four thousand, or ore dollars. As a atter of fact tho recepts were about ffteen hundred dollars for there s a reserved secton suffcent to accoodate only eghty auto obles ; the rest just stck around where thoy can get good holdng ground. t s conceded on all sdes that a better gae of polo was never seen here. And whle Oahu won by a sall argn tho Mau boys ade the work for every tally and dur ng every perod. t was a hard gae for the players and t s co on reark today that tho qualty of tho play as well as the qualty of the horse flesh was never equalled n an nter sland contest. talked wth John Fleng before the gae and he gave t as hs opnon that the wnners would be playng n luck; nether sde had an advantage n en or anals and the en who gave odds n tho bettng were takng a gablers chance; the decson would go to the tea that had luck behnd t." And Oahu got tho decson wth or wthout any eleent of luck. Tho gaeness n tho pullng up won tho tea all sorts of prase after Mau had Oahu vrtually n tho door. The local tea was practcally beat en for at half to Mau was sx to Oahu three. But tho ten nutes rest probably saved tho local tea. At tho call of to they showed tea work that was rearkable for ts exactness. Then Mau was weakened by beng deprved of tho bervce of three of tho teas best pones. All tho way through the tea work was alost boyond crtcs and nether sde had any tho better of tho other. Perhaps n the last half tho tea work of Oahu stood out a bt and tho en showed tea tranng and each player had hs turn at the spectacular and no opportunty was lost. "Many owners have not taken the te nor pans to understand why spark levers should be retarded for pullng and advanced for speed work," says S. G. Chapan, the Hudson dstrbuter. "As soon as the otor slows n lttle n gong up hll retardng the spark enables ore power to be obtaned fro the otor at ths slow speed, that s to say, f the spark s not retarded the otor wll go slower than f t s retarded. Do not retard the lever to the utost under these condtons. On the contrary, retard the lever just far enough so that the knockng or pounddg ceases. Retardng the spark to the proper poston causes the axu pressure of the exploson to occur at the best pont of the stroke. "To slow the otor cut off as uch xture as the throttle allows, then slow the otor stll further by retardng the spark, but on no account retard the spark fully when the throttle s well open for the purpose of slowng the otor. "When the spark s advanced too far wth the otor runnng slowly the exploson takes place before the pston has reached the end of ts copresson stroke, thus gvng t a tendency to run backward. The oentu of the otor, of course, forces t forward past the dwad center, thus placng undue stran on the bearngs, causng consderable loss of power and a knock n the otor. f the spark s too uch retarded when the otor s runnng rapdly the exploson occurs so late that t fnds the pston part of the way down on the powerstroke." Thrty traps rounded up recently n Plyouth, Pa., were trotted out on the baseball Held by Burgess Morrs, dvded evenly., told by hs honor that the wnnng aggregaton was to be well fed and ordered fro town, whle the others were to go back to the locku and p rean prsoners for two days, puttng the te at work on the streets poundng stone. The Burgess called one set the "Never Works and the others the "Tol Fearers " He upred the gae and gave drectons that nne nnngs be played. The "Xevr Works, lrst at bat, pounded the hall so fercely that a dozen runs cae over the plate, but the "Tol Fearers" ted the score n ther half. The thrd nnng was a repetton of the others, the hoboes resortng to roughhous tactcs to gut enough runs to wn the gae. Ths nnnn g ended: "Never Works" G, Tol Fearers" C The ffth nnng was a sugfest for the "Never Works." They got over ten runs, when the Tol Fearers" took ther turn at bat. Ths crowd chased hoe nne runs. Because of the excessve heat the Burgess ended the gae, declarng the Never Works vctors by a score of 4 to 8. Both teas were arched back to jal. When the crowd got there hefethe, as he prosed, and declared that nasuch as the sun was too war to pert h to see the gae to a tnsl!, he decded, to release every one, wth the under standng that they were to leave town ten nutes after ther eal and not show up agan for a perod of at least another year. THE MAU NEWS. SATURDAY, JULY 27, 92. Oahu Wns Frst Gae (Contnued fro Pnge.) to the perfect knowledge the en had of the gae There were no ntentonal fouls and atthe close the upre rearked that f there were any they were unobservable. Followng the gae there was a dnner at the Rathskeller when all the conventons were forgotten Vctors and vanqushed enjoyed the repast, the usc, the sayngs and the well, let t be another story. The gae up to half te saw Mau playng rngs around Oahu. The local tea ddnt see able to get gong, and appeared to be sufferng fro a bad attack of stage frght. Frank Baldwn, the ost dangerous htter on the Mau tea, was left practcally alone, to get off wth spectacular runs and arvelous shots that kept the ball perlously near the blue goal. Walter Dllngha, usually the coolest and ost relable of players, was ssng easy blackhandand wasnt payng anywhere near to for. Arthur Rce was badly off, and Harold Castle seeed to be havng all sort of trouble wth hs ounts, whch kept h out of the gae a good part of the te. All the ore credt then, for the lne brace and ultate vctory. A tea that can pull tself together a delver the goods aganst odds, s a good tea to te Up to n the long run. And all credt to the losers, who curred ther keen dsappontent behnd the sles of true sportsen, and who ddnt beef over the hard luck whch kept three of ther best pones out of the gae at a te when they were ost needed. ndvdually, as good fellows, and collectvely as good polo players, the en fro Mau deserve the hghest prase. t was not untl the seventh perod that the crowd woke up to the fact that Oahu had a chance, and that the en were akng one of the fnest fghts ever seen on a polo feld, at hoe or abroad. Play started wth Oahu at the bg dsadvantage of knockng uphll, but rght here the tde of vctory turned, wth the scorng of the gaes ost sensatonal goal. Soon after the throw n Mau worked the ball down to the lower goal, and threatened at any oent to put t through the stcks. t was ht sharply toward the Wak k sdeboard s, and n a flash Harold Castle was on top of t, fur the nute clear of the feld. He gave t a ghty crack that lfted the whte vllow hgh n the ar, and ht agan for good dstance before Davd Fleng, the Mau back, reached the ball and stopped t wth a whch backhande r, also sent t nto the ar. Sa Baldwn was thunderng along behnd hs tea ate, and as the ball rose off Flengs stock, he ade a desperate pass at t n da The r. odd chance n a hundred cae of the ball strkng the cane of Baldwns allet and fallng just n front of Arthur Rce, who was the thrd gallopng Oahuan of the lne. Rce ht wth all hs ght, but the ball sdeboardcurved even nearer the s, and went boundng and hoppng toward the lne, but far away fro the posts. TOOK LONG CHANCE. And then Arthur Rce ade one of those rare shots that so seldo coe when really needed. Leanng forward n hs saddle and steadyng hs pony for the fnal effort, the Oahu back ht a ghty stroke under hs ponys neck So sharp was the angle that the stck bent alost double as the cane brought up aganst hs ounts neck. The ball quartered for the whte posts, wth three Mau en alost on top of t, and trckled over the coveted lne as the foreost an reached out for t. 5 Many Auto Accdents. What cne very near leng a fatal accdent occured at Kahulu, last Monday ornng. Joe Medus was drvng a Hudson lelongng to tle ao Stables, and had as passengers Drs. Mederos clas he was not gong over 20 les an hour, whle eye wtnesses of the affar aver le was gong at least 25 les. Mederos clas he dd not see the flagan at the ralroad crossng untl he was wthn sx feet of the crossng. The tranen say the flagan was out long before ether tran or autooble was near the crossng. The facts are that the auto drver Beeng he was n danger and could not get across ahead of the tran, and could not stop, turned hs car, tryng to run parallel wth the track, ahead of the tran. He was not quck enough, and the frst car caught the auto behnd, sashng the upper works all out of shape. Drs. Pratt and McCoy were n the back seat and escaped wth only a severe shakng up, whle Mr. Tre venan was slghtly cut. An auto standng on the wrong sde of the street, was run nto Sunday evenng, and a broken wheel and bent axle was the result. Wednesday evenng, whle two autooblles were returnng fro the show at Puunene, they encounte d soe roang horses belongng to the ao Stables, on the road. The frst car slowed up quckly to avod the horses, and the second car ran nto a tree standng by the sde of the road, to avod sashng nto the car ahead. Last Saturday evenng a wldly drven auto, cae very near causng a bad accdent on the beach road, whch was averted only by the quck acton of others. As t was, there was very lttle scorng, and though the feldng was good, exceptonally Aod on both Bdes, there was very lttle enthusaa shown ether by the Dlavers or the fans. The Stars won by a score of 5 to 2. n the second gae, the Cap One tea had four new players, but ths dd not strengthen the partcle. Kahulu ade a runaway race of t. Cap One was hopelessly outclassed, and though they crawled up a bt on Kahulu towards the close, t was easly seen that McCauley was only loafng, and gvng hs tea ates soe needed feldng practce.
