OUR COMMUNITY GIFT FOR AUGUST A portion of this month s collection will go to support the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Tijuana who work with migrants and locals, providing spiritual and psychological accompaniment to those suffering from addiction or broken families. AUGUST IS NATIONAL MAKE-A-WILL MONTH - Making a will is probably one of the most unpleasant tasks around. However, as Christians, we know we re a pilgrim people and earth is not our permanent home. After taking care of family and other important needs, there will always be others after us who will need the spiritual support of Newman, especially future CAL students. Your foresight and planning can make a great difference for a future generation in need.

INTERFAITH GATHERING TO PRAY FOR PEACE- Tuesday, Sept. 6, 5:45pm at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Event Center. Bishop Michael Barber, SJ, invites people of all faiths to come together to pray for true peace in our community, in our country and in our world. The speakers are: Dr. Professor Musdah Mulia, Rabbi Professor Daniel Sperbe, and Bishop Ioan Casian of Vicina, Auxiliary Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas. For more information visit: TRANSFORMING LIVES TOUR Please join us for the Transforming Lives Tour on Sept. 10 th from 11:15am to 12:15pm in the Hecker Room. This presentation proves an opportunity to learn about the programs of Catholic Charities of the East Bay. You ll hear about: legal immigration and refugee resettlement services, homelessness prevention through housing and utilities support, an update on Claire s House (home for trafficked minors), school-based behavioral health services program for youths, and grief counseling and family support for victims of crime. CAR NEEDS FOR THE PAULISTS You may have noticed the compact size of the Paulists at Berkeley. This has led to all of us driving our Honda Fit but not the other cars. So we d like to sell or trade in our other two cars, 2005 Saturn Vue and 2009 Honda Pilot EXL, for something like 2 used Honda Civics. 4 RCIA WELCOMING OTHERS TO SHARE OUR JOURNEY OF FAITH The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults will resume on Thursday, September 14, at 7:30 pm. The RCIA team-susan Cass, Brett Furnas, Matt Hauwiller, Debbie Tatto, and I look forward to welcoming all who are interested in learning (or re-learning) about the faith. The journey lasts approximately eight months, leading to the Easter Vigil, when we will celebrate with them the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The RCIA journey has been compared to a courtship: the initial attraction to the faith, followed by a period of dating and discernment, leading to full commitment and communion. During that time, the catechumens (those never baptized) and candidates (Christians seeking full communion in the Church) reflect deeply about their search for God and the encounter with Christ made available to them in the Catholic Church. We need your help! First of all, share information about the RCIA with those you know who have shown an interest in the Church. Invite them better still, bring them! to the opening sessions in September - Thursday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm. Secondly, please consider becoming a sponsor for one of the catechumens/ candidates. The duties of the sponsor include joining them frequently at the Thursday evening meetings, and being available to answer questions they may have. It is a wonderful way to renew your own understanding of and commitment to the faith. Thirdly, keep all us in your prayers as we undertake this important missionary task. 5 Welcome Students and New Parishioners! As we transition to a new academic year, welcome all who are moving into or returning to Berkeley. We hope that Newman Hall Holy Spirit Parish will be your spiritual home during your time at Berkeley. Striving to be faithful to our patrons Blessed John Henry Newman and the Holy Spirit, we endeavor to be a community that recognizes and employs the wonderful power of God s gift of our intellect and reasoning skills, while humbly knowing we need God s grace and love. This is a place for questioning, exploring, stumbling, and discovering together the mystery of God s creation and ways, and our role in the world. We also endeavor to live the fire of the Holy Spirit, to be a community that loves and serves, co-workers in building the Kingdom the Heaven, a kingdom of peace and justice. If you are a college student, this is wonderful time in your life to grow in maturity and personal identity. Make sure not only to focus on academic growth, but also on growth of the full person spiritual, emotional, relational, physical, as well as academic. Though college will try to take up all your time, make sure to seek balance. The ways of society have a tendency to want to rob our soul and spirit. We have a wonderful Student Ministry Team and FOCUS Missionary Team who are planning lots of great activities for the year. We also have numerous other student and parish groups and activities for students alone and students and permanent parishioners together. Don t forget to call on any of the staff members if you have questions or concerns or you just want to chat. We also need your gifts and leadership skills, so please step up and get involved. This is also our parish s 50 th year in our current building, where we strive to make faith concrete. We ll be having a community celebration on Saturday, Sept. 30 th. All are invited.
