1 Notes on Genesis 41 (41:1) 893. end under BDB = ק ץ 321a. dream under BDB חלם 384a. stream of the Nile, stream, canal under BDB י א ר = ה יּ א ר (41:2) 421b. fair, beautiful under BDB = י פ ה 831a. heifer, cow under BDB = פּ ר ה 135b. fat under BDB = ב ר יא 28a. reeds, rushes under BDB = א חוּ noun. + article + בּ preposition בּ א חו Another good Egyptian loanword. (41:3) 201a. thing, small, fine under BDB = ד ק 973b. lip, speech, edge under BDB = שׂ פ ה (41:4) 429b. awake under BDB = יקץ (41:5) 445b. sleep under BDB = ישׁן

2 987b. ear of grain under BDB = שׁ בּ ל ת 889b. reed, stalk under BDB = ק נ ה (41:6) 995a. scorch, blight under BDB = שׁדף 870a. East, east wind under BDB = ק ד ים 855a. sprout, spring up under BDB = צמח (41:7) 118b. = swallow down, swallow up under BDB בלע 570b. full under BDB = מ ל א (41:8) 821b. = Niphal be disturbed under BDB פעם 924b. breath, wind, spirit under BDB = רוּח 355a. engraver, writer > astrologer, magician under BDB = ח ר ט ם 314b. wise under BDB = ח כ ם 837b. interpret (dream) under BDB = פתר (41:9) 1052b. butler, cup-bearer under BDB = מ שׁ ק ה

3 sin under BDB 307b. This noun never appears except with suffix or in = ח ט א plural. 270b. = Hiphil cause to remember, keep in remembrance under BDB 269b, זכר (41:10) 893a. be wroth under BDB = קצף 1038a. place of confinement, jail, prison under BDB = מ שׁ מ ר 66a. bake under BDB = אפה (41:11) 837b. interpretation (of dream) under BDB = פּ ת רוֹן (41:12) (41:13) 485b. = adverb so = thus under BDB כּ ן 998b. = Hiphil cause to return, bring back under BDB 996b, שׁוב In.כּ נּ י but with suffix כּ ן base, pedestal, office under BDB 487b. Note = כּ ן Biblical Hebrew under certain circumstances a > i or i > a. There are two phonological rules that describe this: In originally closed accented syllables i > a. This is called Philippi s Law. A good example of Philippi s Law is Hiphil 3ms perfect ה פ ק יד but.ה פ ק ד נ ה In originally closed unaccented syllables a > i. This is called attenuation.

4 1067b. hang under BDB = תּ ל ה 930a. = Hiphil cause to run, bring quickly under BDB רוץ 164a. = Piel shave under BDB גלח pass on or away, pass through, Piel change (garment) under BDB = חלף? 322a. (41:15) (41:16) 772b. answer, respond under BDB = ענה 116a. except, apart from under BDB = בּ ל ע ד י Literally(?) Awkward and difficult construction. בלעדי אלהים יענה את שׁלום פרעה apart from me God answers the peace of Pharaoh. Sure enough there is a text-critical note. 1 (41:17) (41:18) 1061a. outline, form under BDB = תּ א ר (41:19) low, weak, poor, thin under BDB 195b. BDB notes this adjective occurs = דּ ל mainly in Wisdom literature and poetry. Which is disturbing. Why? 956a. thin under BDB = ר ק 1 16 a-a G בּ ל ע ד י אלהים לא י ע נ ה which means something like Samaritan Pentateuch and Septuagint have equivalent of בּ ל ע ד י אלהים לא י ע נ ה except for God it is not answered(?).

5 947b. badness, evil under BDB = ר ע (41:20) 911b. former, first, chief under BDB = ר אשׁוֹן (41:21) 899a. inward part, midst under BDB = ק ר ב 321a. beginning under BDB = תּ ח לּ ה (41:22) (41:23) legomenon. dry up, harden under BDB 856a. This may be another hapax = צנם (41:24) 616b. = Hiphil make known, declare under BDB נגד (41:25) (41:26) (41:27) 944a. famine, hunger under BDB = ר ע ב (41:28) (41:29)

6 plenty, satiety under BDB 960a. There are a few other Hebrew words for = שׂ ב ע plenty, satiety but this one is very rare. Also shows up in Proverbs and Qohelet (Ecclesiastes). Which again is disturbing. Why? (41:30) 1013a. = Niphal be forgotten under BDB שׁכח (41:31) (41:34) 824a. commissioner, deputy, overseer under BDB = פּ ק יד = Piel take a fifth part under BDB 332a. This appears to be another hapax המשׁ legomenon. (41:35) 867b. gather, collect under BDB = קבץ 840b. heap up under BDB = צבר grain, corn [British English for what Americans call wheat] under BDB = ב ר 141a. (41:36) 824b. deposit, store under BDB = פ קּ דוֹן 504a. = Niphal be cut off, be cut down under BDB 503b, כרת (41:37) ready. Look up BDB 405b when you re וי יט ב

7 592b. attain, find under BDB = מצא (41:39) 394b. = Hiphil make known, declare under BDB 393a, ידע 106b. = Niphal be intelligent, discerning, have understanding under BDB בין to negate אל verbs, is used to negate indicative לא Remember that א ין נ בוֹן וח כ ם (41:40) imperative/jussive/cohortative verbs, and אין to negate participles/adjectives. object? kiss under BDB 676a. Who is the subject? Who or what is the = נשׁק Does pharaoh really mean his people will kiss Joseph s mouth? Or does this mean something else? Sure enough there is a text-critical note for ישּׁק and it s a doozy a. only under BDB = ר ק 2 40 a prp ;י שׁ ק G υπακουσεται, prp שׁ ב ;י ק S nsb djn = י שּׁ פ ט Ouch. Which means something like propose י שׁ ק [??? not a clue and I worked on this for a while] instead of ק.י שּׁ Septuagint has will obey so propose י ק שׁ ב give attention [see BDB 904a]. Syriac has nsb djn which is equivalent of י שּׁ פ ט plead [see BDB 1047b-1048a]. P Kyle McArter says the essential question in textual criticism is which reading most likely gave rise to the others? What do you think? Do you think some Hebrew scribe wrote י שּׁ ק because he could not make sense of one of these other readings? Or did Septuagint and Syriac scribes have trouble with (my people) will kiss (your mouth)?
