1 1 Psalm 45 (45:1) (= superscription Eng) 663b. = Piel act as overseer, superintendent, director under BDB נצח ל (of, belonging to). The preposition ל Grammatical note = Possessive למנצח can indicate that its object is owned or possessed by someone. The idea of possession is not necessarily literal; it may indicate a relationship other than possession This is also called periphrastic ל or the genitive.ל When the object of ל is someone who wrote something, it is sometimes referred to as the ל of author or the ל auctoris. See Williams, 270. So it is unclear that the superscription is attempting to express that David (or the director) is the author or if the psalm is associated with David (or the director). [Check KB] 799a. rich under BDB = ע שׁ יר (45:14) twice. and only כ בוּדּ ה I = glorious under BDB 458b. 7 7 This construction is characteristic of Late Biblical Hebrew. Not the בכל דר ודר only late feature in this psalm. = Hiphil give thanks, laud, praise under BDB 392a. Now some ידה < יהוד ך scholars say that there is no significance difference between thank and praise but I say there is. For a fuller explanation of the difference see Walter Brueggemann, Israel s Praise: Doxology Against Idolatry and Ideology. Thanksgiving tends to challenge the status quo by emphasizing that God can change it. Whereas praise that emphasizes what God is or does tends to emphasize the status quo. That is a two sentence summary of Brueggemann s book. Granted this is about praising the king. Note form. The first ה is Hiphil prefix and I י has disappeared.
