1 2 Kings 14:23-29 (last edited February 29, 2012) You should find this text relatively easy. The main thing that can confuse you is all the proper names. Very few text critical notes. (14:23) This.יהוה suffix which is an abbreviation for י הוּ Personal name. Note the א מ צ י הוּ is called a theophoric name and י הוּ is called a theophoric element. name. Personal יוֹא שׁ 1 מל ך ישׂראל Personal name. Now how exactly is this pronounced? Break it into י ר ב ע ם syllables. Which syllables are open? closed? Remember that qamets in a closed unaccented syllable is a qamets qaton and pronounced o not aa. name. Place שׁ מ רוֹן Two observations. First is that 1-2 Kings often tell us the year in the northern kingdom of Israel alongside the year in the southern kingdom of Judah. These references are valuable to attempting to reconstruct the exact chronology of the kings of Israel and Judah. Which is a complicated and not entirely settled subject in biblical studies. My bachelor s thesis devotes some attention to this problem. The second is אמציהו בן יואשׁ and בן יואשׁ.ירבעם Wait a second. Are these the same (14:24)?יואשׁ 1 a mlt Mss GT fms ע ל which is actually pretty simple. Several manuscripts of Septuagint and Targumim (a manuscript of a particular edition) have equivalent of king over Israel. Do you think there is a difference between king of Israel and king over Israel?

2 name. Personal נ ב ט = Hiphil cause or חטא Form? and long i vowel. Conjugation? ה Note ה ח ט יא induce to sin under BDB 306b. (14:25) Root? and long i vowel. Conjugation? Form? ה Note ה שׁ יב 147b. border, boundary, territory under BDB = ג בוּל name. = preposition + Place מ לּ בוֹא ח מ ת now. sea under BDB 410b. Very common noun. Learn it = י ם name. Place ה ע ר ב ה before suffix. This is because segolate ע ב ד but ע ב ד = noun + suffix. Note ע ב דּוֹ nouns originally looked like CvCC(u). Hey we know this guy. Do you think the subject of the book of Jonah is יוֹנ ה historically the same as this person? Hint = Nineveh was not yet the capital of Assyria. Just saying. name. Personal א מ תּ י name. Place ג ת ה ח פ ר This is כדבר יהוה אלהי ישׂראל אשׁר דבר ביד עבדו יונה בן אמתי הנביא אשׁר מגת החפר a remarkable statement. I thought the people of Israel were a bunch of total apostates who had completely abandoned Adonai. And get a load of the very next verse. (14:26)

3 777a. affliction, poverty under BDB = ע נ י be = מרה verb. ה pattern even though this is a 3 rd כוֹכ כ Form? Note מ ר ה contentious, refractory, rebellious. This is a little odd in this context. Compare מרר = be bitter under BDB 600a. 2 end, extremity under BDB 66a. Often used to express none, nought but = א פ ס sometimes only, except. Which is confusing. Note on grammar This is א פ ס (lacking, without, un-, there is no). This use of א פ ס called the privative indicates the lack or absence of something. 783b. restrain, retain under BDB = עצר pattern. כ כוּכ Note ע צוּר You should know this root. But if your memory has abandoned you look ע זוּב under BDB 736b. (there is not). Literally א פ ס Negative existential clause with אפס עצור אפס עזוב none/there-is-not bound and none/there-is-not free. 740a. help, succor under BDB = עזר pattern. כוֹכ כ Note ע ז ר Now why would Adonai show mercy to a nation that has turned away from him? We are about to find out. (14:27) = מחה form? ending of what kind of verb וֹת = preposition + verb. Note ל מ חוֹת wipe, wipe out under BDB 562a. 3 2 a frt l ה מּ ר cf GSV. Propose reading bitterness, compare Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate. 3 Interesting text critical note. a G -L το σπερµα All but one edition of Septuagint has the seed. There is no way this could possibly be from a scribal error because Hebrew would be זרע which is too dissimilar from.שׁם So Septuagint tradition says God said he would not wipe out the seed rather than the name of Israel. Important difference?

4 where we ו Form? Note.ו יּוֹשׁ יע = verb + suffix. PGN of suffix? That leaves ו יוֹשׁ יע ם would expect first root letter(?) and long i vowel. Conjugation? So that is why Adonai helps out the northern kingdom of Israel during its time of suffering. (14:28) remainder, excellent, excess under BDB 451b. Often used to express the = י ת ר rest of something. strength, might under BDB 150a. Here to = ג בוּר ה suffix. + noun + ו = וּג בוּר תוֹ express mighty deeds of the king. pattern although one כ כוּכ Note.כ תוּב Recognize the ending. That leaves כ תוּב ים of the vowels has reduced in Distant Open position. scroll. missive, document, writing, book under BDB 706b. Usually = ס פ ר An interesting statement. This is הלא הם כתובים אל ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישׂראל in effect an ancient footnote. It also tells us that what the Deuteronomistic editors included is not the entire history of the northern and southern kingdoms. Too bad we have never found a copy of this work! (14:29) Form? Indication of other than Qal? You should know this common root ו יּ שׁ כּ ב by now. Okay we have seen this name before but not with a meteg under the first י ר ב ע ם qamets in order to make it clear this is qamets not qamets qaton. Because it is an open syllable there should be no need for one right? But we have one here along with a text critical note. 4 4 a sic semper C, L alias sine meteg. Well I still know enough Latin to tease out thus always Cairo Codex of prophetic books {not familiar with that one}, Leningrad Codex {which is basis for BHS} but without meteg. Which is pretty much the point we just made. This is how Jeroboam is always written but normally without meteg.

5 = noun + suffix. PGN of suffix? Inflection of noun? Note this common א ב ת יו masculine noun takes feminine plural endings. Personal name. Compare the theophoric element of this name to that of his ז כ ר י ה יוֹ as well as between י ה and י הוּ father. You will see alternation between and.י הוֹ Is there a pattern to the alternation? North versus south? Early versus late? rather than simple ת ח ת יו = preposition + suffix. Odd that the writer uses ת ח ת יו before the י Many prepositions in Biblical Hebrew add a joining.ת ח תוֹ suffix. Compare א ל and א ל יו to him.
