2 Notes from Rabbi S. David Kane I really enjoy the years when Thanksgiving and Chanukah are close together. I think that Chanukah is much closer in spirit to Thanksgiving than to any of the holidays that are celebrated toward the end of December. Thanksgiving is an American holiday based on ideas handed down through the ages from Judaism. It involves a celebration of gratitude that focuses on both family and community. Even the name of the holiday implies that we have a creator and we ought to take some time to acknowledge all of the things in our lives that we appreciate. A higher power is paying attention to us and is doing things for us. That is a truly powerful thought and a source of comfort and inspiration. Chanukah is a Jewish holiday that commemorates a miraculous historical event - the reclaiming of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. For the Jew in that ancient time, when the oil lasted beyond the first day, they knew that they were not alone. That tiny flame, flickering in the Temple cast a light down through history. The light revealed our Creator in a fashion strikingly different from the Creator s appearances at other points in the history of the Jewish people. No earthquake, no mountains on fire, no burning bush. Just a small flame sending the message that God exists and remembers us. PAGE 2 So, we American Jews are lucky for the years when the two holidays come so close together. The first rooted in the idea of us acknowledging God and the second rooted in the idea of God acknowledging us. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Chanukah the Entire Kane Family Message from the President Shalom Y All, November has been a joyous month and a month full of sadness. We celebrated the joyous occasion of Tommy Morrissey s Bar Mitzvah. Once again, one of our children has grown into Jewish adulthood, with great poise, knowledge, and Yiddishkiet. Our hearts swelled with pride as he led services, chanted a portion of the Torah and his Haftorah. We look forward to Tommy s participation in all aspects of our congregational life. Mazel Tov, Tommy. Our program, Passionate Women of the Bible, given by Dr. Rachel Dulin was extraordinary. If you did not attend, you missed an incredible experience. Rachel was dynamic, entertaining and thought provoking. We all left more enlightened and look forward to a return visit. Our first Comedy Night was a blast. Fun was had by all. We look forward to making this an annual event. It is certainly true that laughter is the best medicine. On a sad note, our congregation lost a dear member, Dr. Hal Leonard. He will be dearly missed by his family, his congregational friends, and friends in the community. Our condolences also to our beloved Rebbitizen on the loss of her mother, Violet Daino; Nancy Kisseloff on the loss of her dear father, Russell Tonne; and Lea Moskowitz on the loss of her aunt Jeanette Gelman. In this season of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, I am thankful for all of my blessings. I am most blessed to consider This month s message by: Lea Moskowitz you my family and look forward to the sharing of all the good things life has to offer. Jo Ann and I look forward to seeing you at the Hanukkah dinner on Friday, December 7 th. May the glow of the menorah warm your hearts and fill you with joy. Lea

Income Tax Planning for 2007 Now is the time to carefully consider the timing of your contributions to Congregation B nai Torah. For people using Itemized Deductions on your 2007 income tax return, all contributions made in 2007 will reduce your taxable income and the amount of your tax for Making an additional contribution yet in 2007, that you would have made in the first half of 2008, will provide you with an immediate tax savings one year sooner than if made in 2008! There is also a special charitable giving incentive for 2007 for people 70 ½ or older. You may make a withdrawal, including your required distribution, from your IRA and pay no income tax on the amount contributed to Congregation B nai Torah. Your withdrawal must be made by a direct transfer from your IRA Trustee (bank, etc.) to us. You do not need to itemize deductions on your 2007 tax return for this benefit. Additionally, Congregation B nai Torah has a brokerage account that allows us to receive contributions of securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.). For your information, a contribution of an appreciated security (e.g. stock currently at a higher value than when it was bought) is valued for tax deduction purposes at current price. You do not incur any taxable capital gain on this contribution. Please call Harvey Singer ( ) and/or your tax counselor with any questions you may have, or to confirm the benefit to you. Membership Committee News! Eileen Selis and Marvin Schild The brochures have been completed. Carol Hyman is in charge of distribution and the entire committee will be involved in the process of distributing them personally to the real estate brokers in the Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach areas. It was decided to do the distribution in this manner to increase the amount of brochures finding their passage to our target recipients. Distribution will begin next week. The members of the committee are Bonnie Turetsky, Ed Rothberg, Lynn Hartman, Robin Freedman, and Sue Abel. Co-Chairs Eileen Selis and Marvin Schild will also help distribute.

9 PAGE 9 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Congregants: Tadah Rabah! Thank you to everyone who was involved with the very successful first annual Jerry Doliner Walk-a-Thon especially Rabbi Kane and the youth of the Temple. Celeste Doliner also expresses her appreciation because she knows that her late husband would have been especially pleased to see such a large turnout. Over $5,000 was raised which will allow us to buy food that Jerry continually brought to the Federation like turkeys, hot dogs, etc. The need for assistance has really escalated. The Peace for Israel Festival was well received. Israel is in a very precarious position at the present and Israel needs all the support she can get. The Evangelical Christians have maintained steadfast support for this tiny country and we as Jews must appreciate their efforts. The funds that were raised will be sent to the victims of the Terrorist attacks in Israel. Kristallnacht was held at Temple Beth-El on Thursday, November 8 th in conjunction with the Jewish Federation. Chanuka will soon be here. The Jewish Federation wants to buy toys for the younger children and gift cards for the older ones. This past year has been very hard on some of our Jewish families and many of them need our assistance. They don t have enough funds to pay their every day bills, much less buy presents for Chanuka. Any donations large or small will be appreciated. On December, 13th, the gala luncheon will be held at Indigo Banquet Center for our seniors from nursing homes, assisted living facilities and anyone who is 85 years young. One of our Bet Sefer Israeli friends is offering to make the best homemade latkes. I have tasted them and they are delicious. So, Mr. Hooty, you and everyone who reads the Torah Times in the next few months will be able to know about a good book to read with Jean s reviews. Mr. Hooty, for you and every one else who likes to read we need you back. Jean. Don t keep us waiting too long. Your B nai Torah Family misses you. Dear Mrs. Moskowitz & Mrs. Singer: The first annual Jerry Doliner Walk-a-thon was a huge success. Thank you to the youth group of Congregation B Nai Torah and Rabbi Steven David Kane for having this walk-a-thon in memory of a fantastic guy the late Jerry Doliner. So much so that we honored him at the last Community Wide Shabbat and we named the Federation s food bank after him. Money raised came to almost $5,000 which will be used to purchase turkeys for both Thanksgiving and the Holidays. We will also replenish our freezers with the kind of food that Jerry used to bring us like hot dogs, chickens, vegetables, etc. People who need to be thanked are: the mailing committee, Gloria Max, Lea Moskowitz, Beth Worman, Sammy & Jordan Turetsky, Lilly Wohl and her friend and Saralee Morrissey for bringing pizzas for the mailing committee. Workers at the walk-a-thon were, Samuel Furman, Vickie & Paul Goldberg, Lorna Ravede, Beth Worman, Jo Ann & Harvey Singer and Allan Liebman and a special thank you to the Liebman youngsters Sarah & Adam for staying behind after it was all over and cleaning up. We thank Lynne Ritter, President of the Jewish Federation for supplying the hot dogs, chips, water and juice. It was so nice to see the 57 walkers in their green T-shirts with the sponsor s names on the back. We thank Nissim Amir for not only donating a huge colored banner, he also donated quality T-shirts. Congregation B Nai Torah s youth group designed the attractive logo on the front of the T-shirts. Again, thank you so much for everyone who had a part in this first walk-a-thon. Celeste Doliner who was the Grand Marshal thanks all the sponsors and all the participants. Rabbi told me that he prayed really hard that it should not rain and would you believe everywhere else the storms were tremendous but not were the walkers walked. I truly believe that Jerry Doliner was watching over us. Shalom, Gloria Max Executive Director
