1 November 2015 Marcheshvan Kislev 5776 Volume 23, Issue 11 Torah Times Together we honor G-d and Torah, Promote Spiritual Growth, and Strengthen Our Community Special Points of Interest: Ray Weiss pg. 1 anukkah Celebration Planned at CBT by Ray Weiss It s back to the basics when it comes to the annual anukkah celebration at Congregation B Nai Torah. For the first time in three years, a traditional sit-down dinner is planned as part of the Dec. 11 th celebration. Plans are still being formalized but everyone is encouraged to bring their own menorah and seven candles to light on the sixth night of the holiday. And make your reservations early. Last year, Doug Cotler, a Grammy-winning singer/ songwriter known for his humorous Jewish tunes, performed at the Oceanfront Bandshell as part of a Daytona Beach Community anukkah celebration. So no dinner was held at the Temple. But on the last night of anukkah, children sang songs, Guest Speaker to Visit CBT by Ray Weiss The Middle East is a powder keg with a fuse that grows shorter every day. Watching TV and reading newspapers, it s difficult to discern what s fact and what s fiction outside and inside Israel, a nation that faces danger with greater frequency. It s rare that people in Volusia County have a chance to hear from someone who has a background and personal understanding of the troubles that currently face Israel and the Middle East. But on Wednesday, Nov. 4 th at 7 p.m. at Congregation B Nai Torah, Maj. Gen. David Tzur, who served in counter-terrorism units of the Israel Defense Force and the Coastal Plains Police Department, will discuss the current situation facing the Jewish state. Tzur was on the Major General David front lines as Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Public Security and as a commander of the Israeli border police. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Tzur immigrated to Israel at age six. In the mid-1990s he took a leave of absence from his work with the Israeli police families lighted menorahs and, of course, ate potato latkes at the Temple. In 2013, the earliest anukkah since 1899 was celebrated at CBT with a Latkes and Lights celebration where menorahs were lighted and refreshments were served....continued page 6 to work as a security consultant for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. When he returned, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the operations department of the Israeli police force and later held other positions of authority and leadership with Israeli security. Tzur briefly held a seat in the Knesset until Dec is talk is sponsored by The Jewish Federation, its Endowment Fund and CBT. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Struggling to assimilate to the ways of their new world, men and women shared their personal hopes and fears with Abraham Cahan, legendary editor of the Jewish Daily Forward and creator of its enormously popular advice column. The column was called A Bintel Brief Yiddish for A Bundle of Letters - and it spoke with the unparalleled immediacy to both the humor and heartbreak of the immigrant experience. Please Join Us Beverly Lewis will review the book Bintel- Brief in an inter-active fashion with the audience. Sunday, November 22 in the Temple 2 pm-4 pm

3 Page 3 President s Message by Saralee Morrissey Greetings Congregants! Thank you to so many of you in your support of our Congregation B'nai Torah. Without your commitment of time and money, we would not be able to enjoy the many blessings that Judaism provides us through this congregation. Specifically, I would like to thank so many of you for your igh oliday Pledges. As I have said before, it so important for us to meet our financial goals and obligations in order to be able to provide the spiritual, educational and social opportunities associated with our temple, along with maintaining our facility. Please follow through on your pledges. And with regard to recognizing our volunteers and their commitments; I'd like to recognize our Men's Club President, oward Silverstein, CBT Vice- President, Chuck Weisman, and Norm Feldman, for sponsoring their Dinner Dance last month at alifax Plantation. What a thoroughly enjoyable evening! In addition to recognizing the talents and commitments of our Kitchen Angels, we were thoroughly entertained by Adriana Albanese and her dance partners. And there is nothing better than feeling like you can dance (even when you can't). I learned a new dance! Thank you also to Marvin and Beverly Lewis for their outstanding leadership and promotion of this year's first Ada Siegel's "Mind Expansion" series. Thirty people showed up for the Professor Gafni lecture and the comments received afterwards were very positive. The next event on Sunday, November 22 promises to be interactive and enjoyable as well. As a result of the high turnout, we are now in search of a better way to provide screening events which leads me to my next comment. What do you have that can help our Congregation continue its mission? Do you have a special talent, skill or interest? Or perhaps you have (working) computer equipment, a big screen TV? ere is a list of opportunities which might interest you and which would be of use to our Temple. 1) Big Screen to show televised events 2) Computer Monitor 3) Laptop Computer(s) - please don't offer us anything more than three years old or anything that is not working well. 4) Judaic software, games and DVDs Are you interested in social justice? I am looking for someone to chair a Social Action Committee who would organize and schedule regularly our time at the Soup Kitchen and our food drives for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank, develop a relationship and program with the school system to assist students who are homeless, and are open to other ideas in this area. Are you interested in organizing a fundraising/social event? We have rescheduled our Eat Laugh and Bid evening to Saturday, February 6 and I am looking for someone to coordinate and organize the event. This is a delightful event that in the past has featured our congregants as entertainers, Stuart Amols as our auctioneer, a fabulous spaghetti dinner, and has raised several thousand dollars for our synagogue. It is definitely family friendly. Right now I am looking forward to someone stepping up to coordinate. Give me a call or send me an ! I look forward to hearing from you! Shalom Saralee Ritual Comm ittee Report b y Debra Rodens ky CBT wrapped up the holiday season with Sukkot, Shimini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. We were unable to make a minyan for the first day of Sukkot, so we spent time discussing the Torah portion instead. We did make a minyan for the 2nd day of Sukkot and Shimini Atzeret. Simchat Torah was a delight. We had so many Torah carriers dancing around with children waving flags, it was a sight to behold. Afterwards we enjoyed building our own sundaes. Rabbi Merril Shapiro lead Shabbat services the weekend of the 9th and 10th. e included an Ask the Rabbi session. Thank you, Rabbi Shapiro. Our next Kid and Tot Shabbat will be on Friday, November 6th at 6:00 pm. CBT NEEDS YOUR COMPUTERS! If you are upgrading your laptop, why not send us the one you won t need! Call the office and let us know what you can donate.

This Kid and Tot Shabbat was paid for by money received from the CBT Board. On Sunday, October 4 th, we learned about Simchat Torah. The children learned some new songs and marched around the school room singing with pretend flags. They made paper Torahs with the first five books of the Bible. Mike Chuvan taught the 3rd and 4 th graders Ethics and Simchat Torah. They have also started learning ebrew. Rabbi Kane taught the older children The istory of Biblical Families and making good choices.. After snacks, we played games of Succat/ Simchat Torah Bingo. Thanks to Sydney Nussbaum, Joshua Liebman, and Alannah Silverstein for all their assistance and leadership. Monday night was Simchat Torah and the children brought the Torahs that they had made in Sunday School and danced with them. 8 Page 8 Torah Times Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties 470 Andalusia Avenue-Ormond Beach, Florida (386) I want to thank Dr. Leonard Indianer for contacting me about Barry Rosen who spent 444 days as a hostage in Iran. e first went to Tiger Bay and gave a very interesting talk and that same night he spoke at Temple Beth-el. I was very happy that we had a great crowd and that we had a lot of people of different faiths who came to hear him speak of his days in captivity. is wife Barbara also spoke about how hard it was for both of them. It was very difficult for the children who were very young to acknowledge their father when he finally did come home. We pray that the violence in Israel won t escalate. Israel has seen enough bloodshed but we are proud that the Federation through your donations built 6 bombshells for children in the poorest neighborhoods of Israel. Many of the children have now received their first PJLibrary book and if you are interested in this program that is free, please contact Micheline Welch at michelinewelch@gmail.com or the Federation at We are going to have two other speakers sponsored by Jewish Federation as follows: Monday, November 2, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Beth-El as part of the 2015 Malka Altman Memorial Lectures in Jewish Studies by Dr. Joyce Antler. She is a professor at Brandeis University and she will speak on Rabbis, Rebels, and Supreme Court Justices: ow Jewish Women Shaped Modern America. On Wednesday, November 4, 2015 Congregation B Nai Torah at 7:00 p.m., we will have Maj. Gen. David Tzur who served in counter-terrorism units of the Israel Defense Force and the Coastal Plains Police Department as Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Public Security and as Commander of the Israel Border Police. Sponsored by the Jewish Federation and Congregation B Nai Torah. Both these events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. On November 15 th at Dr. & Mrs. Michael Kohen s home we will have our annual $3,600 and over Pace Setters Dinner. We have a surprise speaker that you will find very interesting. Please let us know if you want to attend. I thank the Temples for having a Trick or Treat for unger Drive. This really helps our food pantry immensely and I am very proud of all the youths who will participate in this hunger drive. We also will be asking funds for our annual Turkey Drive. Thanksgiving is a holiday where I can honestly say that every American Family wants to sit down for a Turkey Dinner. We are asking for $15.00 which will enable us to have a 15 pound turkey to give to a family in need. Last year we helped 450 families receive a turkey and all the sides. Even though it poured buckets last year, people were determined to get their turkey. Please help with this important cause. Again, thank you for all your prayers. Social Action Committee at CBT Congregation B nai Torah needs someone looking to get involved more with our community and who would organize and schedule regularly our time at the Soup Kitchen and our food drives for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank, develop a relationship and program with the school system to assist students who are homeless, and is open to other ideas in this area. If you are this person, contact Saralee through the Temple office
