All of the services were well-attended by members and guests, with Yom Kippur day being the highest, probably over 175 people. Rabbi Kane, alone, led all the services and did very well. Many congregants, adults and youth, helped with the services in many ways Torah readers, Haftarah chanters, leading various prayers and blessings, and shofar blowers. Nearly every adult member who wished to participate did so by an English reading, ark open and close, carry the Torah, a Torah aliyah, or lift or bind the Torah. Many thanks to Bruce Barenbaum and George Selis, and their helpers, for setting up and taking down the chairs and taking out and putting back the High Holiday books. For security we had an Ormond Beach Police Officer present on our property during the services for the 1 st day of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur. We also had child care available in our School/Office building from 9:30 am 1:30 pm on the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. 2 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 2 RABBI S MESSAGE The original Thanksgiving, our Sukkot has just concluded. Right on time our weather has changed to a few days of crisp fall weather. Our holiday season has brought many of us to decisions about the immediate or long term planning for our futures. What are our resolutions made of? Are they sand castles built with loving intensity on the shore only to be washed away by our daily routines and obligations? Or, are they the sturdy building blocks of the best lives that we can imagine, resistant to old patterns and habits and dependable for ourselves and those in our lives? When we shine the light of the Jewish or American thanksgiving on our lives we must immediately be grateful for the fact that we can chose whether or not to keep our resolutions in this year of hurricanes and floods, of war and of economic strain. Many of our fellow Americans have found their choices limited or absent all together. So, what does gratitude for having choices mean? It implies an obligation to choice wisely to try harder, to go farther, to achieve a life that is described by worthwhile acts. Lets try acting together. During these PAGE 2 few weeks between our Thanksgivings let each of us once a week send a note of appreciation to someone in the congregation who we think ought to be thanked. For the sake of this friendly exercise, s don t count. Appreciation makes us better people whether we give it or receive it. Rabbi s office hours this month will be Thursday & Friday from 10:30 to 12:30 with the exception of Thanksgiving week. Rabbi S David Kane CO-PRESIDENT'S Irv Abel & Charlie Moskowitz This months message by: Irv Abel Dear Members and Friends: As I look back over the last few weeks I am very proud of our holiday services. I am sure you will all join with me in congratulating the Rabbi on a wonderful job. All the services were well attended, the atmosphere was warm and meaningful, and the messages delivered by the Rabbi were thought provoking. The number of people attending all of our services including Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah were outstanding considering that all the holidays were on weekdays. We want to thank Harvey Singer, in particular, for all the work he did as chairperson of the ritual committee to insure everything was so well organized. There is not enough room to thank all the others that helped to make the holiday services successful. After Yom Kippur, there was a large turnout of adults and children to construct and decorate the sukkah. A kosher pizza party followed the construction. Everyone enjoyed sharing bread and wine in the sukkah after services. Unfortunately, the threat of hurricane Wilma prompted an early dismantling of the sukkah. During these holidays we have much for which to be thankful. We have a lovely Synagogue building, with its beautiful ark and stained glass windows. In the last 12 months we have celebrated 1 Bar Mitzvah, 5 Bat Mitzvahs, the B nai Mitzvah of our Magnificent Seven, 1 confirmation, several Congregational Shabbat dinners, numerous special Onegs and Kiddushes, and celebrated with our congregants that traveled with the Rabbi to Israel. We also celebrated the engagement of our Rabbi to Valerie Denner. We began our second year of the combined Sunday school program with Temple Israel. This has been a very successful experience for the youth of our community, and demonstrates how the area s 2 conservative congregations can work together for the benefit of our young people. Our thanks to Saralee Morrissey and Nancy Kisseloff for their hard work and commitment that has made the Sunday school a success. During Yom Kippur we had our annual appeal, which is our once-a-year opportunity to make an additional financial commitment, beyond our dues, to support Congregation B nai Torah s ongoing operating expenses. Some of you were not in attendance and some took their envelopes home with them. For those who were not in attendance we sent your pledge card to you by mail. We respectfully ask those who took envelopes home and those who were not attending to please take the time to reflect on the importance of your support for the congregation, and if you have not so already done so, please send your pledge cards back indicating your level of support. Soon we will be beginning our major fall fundraising events. Sunday, November 6th, will be the Congregational garage sale. Remember, now is a great time to clean out your closets and rid your home or garage of any clutter. On Sunday, December 11th, will be our annual Eat, Laugh and Bid fundraiser. Those that attend always enjoy this fun event. Charlie and I would like to ask for your assistance. our vantage point we see the synagogue functioning well. Of course that is our perspective and others may not see things the same way. We can t change or fix what we do not know about. We invite each of you to call, send us a letter, or to contact us via to let us know your concerns. Are we meeting your needs, are we providing the services expected from your synagogue, are we listening and trying to change and grow? Without your feedback we can only assume that the answers to these questions are yes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Charlie or myself at any time. We are here for you. 3 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 2 SISTERHOOD NEWS Co-Presidents Jo Ann Singer & Lois Liebman This has been a busy month in the kitchen! We want to thank Lea Moskowitz, who led our wonderful crew for the Shabbat Family Dinner, the Break the Fast, and all the holiday services. Lea took charge and did a marvelous job. Our sincere appreciation to Sue Abel, Paula Barenbaum, Robin Freedman, Sema Friedman, Lynn Hartman, Nancy Kisseloff, Eileen Selis, Caryl Shalett, and Ada Siegel, who all worked with Lea. The congregation members who set up the tables after services, and then take them down are such a good team that the sanctuary is transformed literally in minutes! They, too, are members of the catering department! We also hope that Jo Ann Singer will be back with us very soon, after a full and speedy recovery from her recent surgery. Bills have gone out for any unpaid yearbook ads, and also for payments outstanding from various events we have catered. If you have overlooked sending a check for your personal or professional ad, or if you have a balance due on special occasion catering, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible so we can, literally, close the book on our yearbook and any unsettled catering accounts. We hope to have another meeting at the end of this month, and will advise everyone if we can arrange a time. Now that the New Year holidays are over, Thanksgiving is coming soon, and we may not be able to fit it in. Stay tuned for further details PAGE 3 Our holiday services were very well attended and we started off the New Year with a good feeling of togetherness and warmth. There are other congregational events coming up such as the Garage Sale, and Eat, Laugh and Bid, and we urge everyone to do your best to support these efforts. Shalom! Jo Ann Singer & Lois Liebman COUPON BOOKS ARE IN AND READY FOR SALE!! Call Lea at or Vicki In the office To place your Order. They go fast! RELIGIOUS SCHOOL HAPPENINGS: Nancy Kisseloff & Saralee Morrissey, Co-Chairs A month full of holidays is a busy time, but a wonderful time for our religious school children to learn. It is also an opportunity to participate in services and activities that bring us closer as a congregation. One of the highlights of October was gathering together one Sunday and building and decorating our Sukkah. The children were busy creating beautiful crafts with our moms and volunteers joining in the fun. The dads as well as other able bodied congregants, yes Charlie and Irv this means you, did the heavy construction work. Even gathering the palm fronds was a coordinated effort as two of our teenagers, David Amols and Brian Freedman got up early on a Sunday morning to help. When the sukkah was finished Rabbi Kane led us in the blessings, after which our efforts were rewarded with a pizza lunch, accompanied by salads provided by Lea, courtesy of Sisterhood. Thank you to everyone who joined in the activities that day. Next month we look forward to Hebrew school, which resumes on November 1 st and 2 nd, and another month of Sunday school at Temple Israel. Confirmation meets on the 13 th of November this month. We will have Hebrew School on Tuesday November 22 nd. We have a Shabbat Festival planned for November 20 th after which we will take a break the following Sunday for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. See you at school! Shalom Buildings & Grounds Report Nancy and Saralee Fund Raising Report Charlie Shalett is vacationing, report written by Vicki Goldberg. The fund raiser event of the year is Eat, Laugh & Bid. We are hoping for a huge crowd this year. You will see a flyer in this Torah Times detailing the event. The month of October was primarily devoted to supporting, as needed, the High Holiday and Sukkot activities. In November we plan on finalizing some work on the irrigation system, in the School/Office building, and generally getting ready for cooler weather.. George Selis and Bruce Barenbaum, Co-Chairs

6 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 2 Michael Furman, President PAGE 6 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA & FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 ANDALUSIA AVENUE Gloria Max, Executive Director Dear Congregation B'nai Torah: The Rosh Hashanah luncheon held on September 28th for the seniors was fantastic. Over 161 people came together to share in the traditions of the holidays and enjoy the delicious food served by Indigo Banquet Center personnel. We were privileged to have as entertainers Karen Allen, and Joseph and Lynn Goldovitz. Everyone said this was one of the best Rosh Hashanah Luncheon they ever attended. For many of those who attended, these luncheons are the only times they get together with people of their own faith. We did not forget our 70 needy Jewish families. They received gift certificates, food and honey. Thank you to everyone who answered our Rosh Hashanah Appeal. You do make a difference. The Major Gift Dinner (for those who pledge $3,600 or over) held at Dr. Michael & Marian Kohen's home on October 10th was a huge success. We thank Marian & Michael for their hospitality and we thank "Buzzy" and Barbara Glickstein for sponsoring this delicious dinner. The speaker was Malcolm Hoenleine, the CEO of the Conference of Presidents of 52 Major American Jewish Organizations. This organization is the umbrella organization of 52 major organizations such as our United Jewish Communities, Hadassah, etc. and also includes Artza, the reform movement. Dr. Hoenleine is known as one of the most influential men in the United States and because of this, he was able to inform us on some very pertinent facts. He was superb. That night we raised $207, A very good start to our 2006 campaign. Thank you Congregation B'nai Torah for your Rosh Hashanah food appeal for our food pantry. This Federation helps the less fortunate, regardless of race or religion, with food, furniture, clothing, household goods, rental and utility assistance. All our services are given free of charge. The School Board from both Volusia & Flagler Counties asked us to supply 100 Katrina evacuees with 100 backpacks and supplies. Therefore, this year we were able to help a total of 5,307 youths. WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS COM- MUNITY. When you are called for your 2006 Pledge, GIVE GENEROUSLY!! TOGETHER WE CAN DO A WORLD OF GOOD. HOLD THE DATE: November 8, 2005 at 10 a.m. until 11:30 a. m.- flu and pneumonia shots will be given by the health department at the Federation's office. Medicare people are free of charge. On November 9, 2005 at 7 p.m.- a great program, commemorating Kristallnacht, will be held at Temple Beth-El and sponsors are Temple Beth-El and Jewish Federation. On November 20, 2005 at 6:45 p.m.- our next Major Gift Dinner (for those who pledge $1500 for the 2006 campaign or over) will be held at Dr. & Mrs. Marc Harr's beautiful home. Our speaker will be 30 year old Eytan Schwartz who was the winner of the most watched Israeli TV reality show "The Ambassador". Out of a thousand contestants Eytan won the contest. American born Eytan will be the new public relations ambassador to the United States outlining the positive virtues of Israel. Come hear this speaker. RITUAL COMMITTEE REPORT Harvey Singer, Chair Many thanks to the many congregants who participated in the High Holiday services, especially those who were: Torah readers Hannah Elkin, Mollie Elkin, Jackie Flavio, Justin Goldsmith, Charlie Moskowitz, Lea Moskowitz, myself, and Ada Siegel; Haftorah chanters Richard Rhodes and myself; Gabbaim Sue Abel, Jackie Flavio, and Ada Siegel; and Shofar blowers Brian Freedman, Walter Kahn, Charlie Moskowitz, and Debra Rodensky (her 1 st time!). I apologize if I have left anyone out. On Sunday, October 16 th, the Sukkah was erected by a crew of 8-10 men, headed by Ira Freedman and Ken Haberman. The Religious School children and their parents beautifully decorated the Sukkah. Due to concerns for possible hurricane winds the Sukkah was taken down on Monday, October 24 th, by Bruce Barenbaum and his helpers. Many thanks to all those adults and children who helped erect, decorate, and take down the Sukkah. We celebrated the 1 st and 2 nd days of Sukkot, Shabbat Chol Hamoed Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret (with Yizkor) and Simchat Torah in October. Simchat Torah is the holiday at which we read the last portion in the Torah and start over again reading the first portion in the Torah. This is a very festive occasion, especially the evening service, with many children present and parading the Torahs with dancing and singing and waving Israel flags. WOW, October was a busy month!

7 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 2 LIBRARY NOTES: : Jean Leonard PAGE 7 Delving into the Eleanor Fine donated collection, I spotted the book Jane Austen in Boca by Paula Marantz Cohen. It had a bookmark inside which read: "Don t walk in front of me I may not follow. Don t walk behind me I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my FRIEND." With those special words in mind, I decided to read the book and found it delightfully funny yet serious. Cohen takes us to an upscale retirement community in Boca. You find groups of widowed women friends and also widowers who have moved to this Florida community to find new friendships, activities, warm climate and the potential for new relationships. The author follows special groups around, describing their activities and backgrounds. Some conversations will bring laughter as you read the book, others reflections on lives in the past. Perhaps, living in a retirement community myself, it painted pictures of folks I have encountered these past five years. This is a realistic book which will bring many hours of smiles and thought as you reflect on lives of seniors in our present age. It will be found in fiction under author Cohen with the spine label reading Fic/ Coh. Marvin and Beverly Lewis having returned to Ormond Beach from their summer away, again brought a wonderful collection of books for our library. Our thanks to our "library starter and donator." These books are now being processed for circulation. A big surprise greeted me one morning as I found a bag full of children s books hanging on the handle of my door. Eileen Elkin dropped off a collection of wonderful children's books from the early childhood collection of daughters Mollie and Hannah. She left a note with the books stating that these were favorites of the girls as they were growing up. They now wanted to share them with the children of B'nai Torah. In the collection was one of my favorites God s Paintbrush by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso. Rereading this book again brought nostalgic feelings of the beauty and love bestowed upon us during our lives on earth. Thank you for sharing these books Elkin family! MEMBERS NEWS AND NOTES I would like to thank everyone for thinking of me and giving me their best wishes during my recovery from foot surgery. I was not able to attend any of the High Holiday and Sukkot services and I missed being there and seeing everyone then. I look forward to getting back into Temple activities, probably in mid-november, as soon as I am able to walk. Jo Ann Singer spent some time visiting with her daughter-in-law and three grandchildren in Dunedin. Mitch Nixon our world traveler sends out a thanks very, very, very much for the very nice birthday cards & a special thank you to and. Correction to the year book. Regina Cochran s phone number should be Dear Congregation B nai Torah: You really listened to Rabbi Kane because we did receive a nice amount of food from you. It is definitely a mitzvah to help feed the less fortunate among us. We are seeing more families come to our food pantry and we are beholden to people like yourselves who help the needy. There is nothing more heartbreaking then when a child comes to your door and says he is hungry. We are glad to help and we want to thank you for your generosity. May all of you have a sweet New Year filled with good health and happiness. Shalom, Gloria Max, Executive Director Joan Wallerstein sends a L Shana Tova to all the family of B nai Torah. She was sorry she could not make it to Temple this year. This was the first time she missed since the founding of the Temple. is moving ahead with the childrens collection and enjoying all the books that we be available. Ada Siegel has joined the Library staff her assistance will be greatly appreciated. Jean & Harold Leonard & family are celebrating their son Dave s 49th birthday with a family dinner! Congratulations and happy driving to Bobbie Gordon. The proud owner of a new Mercury Sedan.
